mr2_dude10-23-2010, 07:11 PMI see a lot pic with that kind of mod and what to know how to insert the 91 center panel what mod do I need to make and after installing the center panel, do I need to eliminated the reverse light?

I already have the 94 taillight and the 91 taillight and center panel that came with the car WrenchswingeR10-24-2010, 12:32 AMi'm in the process of doing this right now, and its not easy...:D
the center panel needs to be carefully trimmed on either end and reverse lights can be deleted or moved somewhere else. I was thinking of either drilling holes out of the center panel for them or putting them somewhere in the 94 tails. In my opinion, this look is the best for the mk2..the 94+ center panel is just hideous rocklizzard9110-24-2010, 04:35 AMonly trimming?
it looks like you need to add some plastic in there too on the end curves.
do you not?

i really like the 94 center with just the reverse lights.
fully shaved 94 center is cool
but i like having reverse lights.

i think its a tie between my 91 jdm rear center and the 94 centers
hard to pick which i want :/ mr2_dude10-24-2010, 05:53 PMi'm in the process of doing this right now, and its not easy...:D

what kind of plastic do I need to add? WrenchswingeR10-24-2010, 06:49 PMu dont have to add any material to the center panel, but it would look very clean and finished if you could add some sort of plastic bead to the edge of it. i'm still waiting on a doner center panel for the project so i can have a template for the grinding, etc.. As for reverse lights i'm going to attempt putting them in the 94 tails but not 100% on that yet 91redna10-27-2010, 11:08 AMi got the altezza looking lights in my car they came in the car when i bought it they are 94 style lights but i still have the 91 center so i would like to see pics of your mod when finished 91redna10-27-2010, 11:09 AMthey have the reverse lights already in them just for info WrenchswingeR11-26-2010, 11:35 PMfinally started getting somewhere with this tailight mod. I measured, cut, swapped/modified harnesses and so far this is what i got. It still needs to be cleaned up and reverse lights drilled into the center panel but for cosmetic purposes ill post pics. Not sure on the red or yellow corner piece though?? mr2_dude11-27-2010, 12:28 PMfinally started getting somewhere with this tailight mod. very nice work! you could go with red corner piece, do you have any pic with the center piece off to take a close look on the edge from the inside and outside? WrenchswingeR11-27-2010, 09:17 PMthanks..i dont have that pic but shouldn't matter. All the trimming was done on the center panel (none on the tailights), the tails screw into the center panel at the top and everything needed to be coaxed together to fit right. All i did was bolt up the center panel, then loosely attach the tail assemblies and pushed them against the panel as tight as possible then traced the cut-out w/ pencil and trimmed off w/ a Dremel. then i used a die grinder and scotchbrite pads to clean up the lip. also slight modification on the harnesses and sockets and your done..o ya and the reverse lights. good luck! mr2_dude11-28-2010, 11:52 AMthanks..i dont have that pic but shouldn't matter. am gonna try to make mine later on, BTW where you planning on instal the reverse light? WrenchswingeR11-28-2010, 10:25 PMnot sure yet but may sneak it into the center panel somehow using smaller bulbs, or small fog lights bolted up under the rear bumper. gotta have something to signal to all the other dumass drivers when you're backing up  mr2_dude11-29-2010, 08:12 AMnot sure yet but may sneak it into the center panel somehow using smaller bulbs, or small fog lights bolted up under the rear bumper. gotta have something to signal to all the other dumass drivers when you're backing up

^^^ Thats Right! 328FTW11-29-2010, 04:30 PMGet a cutout alloy mr2 badge ie the but MR2 is laser cut out. Then put super bright LEDs behind it that light up in reverse. That would look really cool and discrete. mr2_dude11-29-2010, 07:10 PMGet a cutout alloy mr2 badge ie the but MR2 is laser cut out. Then put super bright LEDs behind it that light up in reverse. mmmm..... I will keep that in mind marazaii11-29-2010, 10:06 PMlooks good! WrenchswingeR11-29-2010, 11:24 PM328 i was thinkin of doin something like that but decided against it..that mod would look cool w/ the brake lights, not so much the reverse lights. I need them to be obvious they are back-up lights or something bad will happen, i know it. On a side note, the red corner lights dont snap in to the kouki tails..i dont want to silicone them in there so ill be using the yellow corners. After i repair the LED plate that was rigged in there buy the previous owner, ugh it never ends :undecided WrenchswingeR12-29-2010, 11:23 PMgot the auxiliary reverse lights wired/mounted tonight, thought i would share. I used clear sidemarker lamps mounted behind the muffler diffuser panel and just extended the factory wiring to them..check it: WrenchswingeR12-29-2010, 11:29 PMhere ya go mr2918012-30-2010, 12:16 AMThat looks nice... But can u take a pic of the center panel just wanna chk them out pls thanks WrenchswingeR01-01-2011, 11:54 PMi would but the digi cam got banged up w/ some new years eve shenanigans. lol will try to get some close-ups for u soon though alpbrazil01-05-2011, 08:09 PMhey where do you guys get tail lights like that?? what website? WrenchswingeR01-06-2011, 01:33 AMthey are 94 jdm tail lights. i bought a used set from a member on the boards here. If you're looking for a set of tails, look for them used on one of the mr2 boards they are always for sale datguydeni01-09-2011, 10:17 PMmmmm to make it look very flush like the center was originial you have to bondo/fiberglass cover up the cut on the center panel. There's a few ways you can cut it as well. You can cut majority of the sides off into a circle (removing the straight ends) or you can cut enough the necessary area to make it fit. This is what i did. Picture is below sloppy cut if i had a dremel would've made it more round or maybe smooth

It took me about an hour to find the link , but here it the best looking 94/91 tail light setup i've seen with fiberglass work (NOTmy CAR)

93' Center Panel Mod - MONOPOLIzED INC. (http://www.monopolized-inc.com/93centerpanelmod.htm)

also this is an option for reverse lights if you want it to work
You would have to make the bulb brighter though

I dont think lighting up the MR2 logo is an indicator to people behind you that you're backing up. Reverse lights should be obvious for the other 99.8 percentile of dumass drivers. Deni, you should trim a bigger cutout and clean it up w/ a grinder..but props on this mod, it really does look the best of all tail setups. ill post up more pics soon datguydeni01-10-2011, 10:13 PMwell the last picture is a mod ben has made which just lights up. You can rewire it to a reverse light which then will only be on when reversing. People have done it, but forgot who (i've gone through the pages before). One day I wish to have it similiar to the fiberglass picture i showed MR2inNC03-04-2011, 12:35 PMhere ya go

Hey,

Nice work on your tail light conversion with 91 center. I'm going through the same thing now with my 1991 MR2 with JDM 3S-GTE. I have an after market set of taillights that I bought that should have been a direct fit, but ended up with lights that are really for a 1994-1998 MR2. I either have to buy a new center piece or modify the 91 center piece, any advice on this?

Do you have any tips you could tell me on modifying the 1991 center piece? What tool did you use to cut the 91 center piece?

Any help appreciated. post back or send me a PM if you can. Or you can always reach me on my cell.

Oh BTW...looks like your running EMS Powered True Dual Cats, I just ordered these for my ride earlier this week. They look awesome.

Thanks,

Wes

Paint it over when done =) WrenchswingeR03-04-2011, 03:19 PMya i used a dremel w/ a nice thin cutting disc to make the cut, then i used a fine grit sanding disc to clean up the edges. Final step was to clean and clear coat the entire panel, esp the outer trimmed edges. Gave it a clean finished look. And yes the exhaust is EMS powered 3" dual..its loud and i love it !
