View Full Version : Repair or Repaint?

Angel04-25-2006, 07:22 PMMonth or so from now I need to get some body work done. I got quoted like 1,000$ to fix my fiberglass/body damage. This included paint but it might be higher because there is no paint code for my car, and no way to tell where the pearl is except for testing. I want my car to stay the same color, generally.

Do you think it would be more cost efficient to just do the body work (except for the fender) myself and have them repaint the entire car, or have them do the body work and just repaint those areas.

My clear coat is a little rough in a few spots... Im not sure. It could be cheaper to just have it repainted because then I'm not paying for all the mess up tests.

I'm not sure what to do.... Ncturnal04-25-2006, 07:32 PMIf you have the resources to do the bodywork yourself, then do that and have the whole car painted. :) Angel04-25-2006, 07:46 PMWell I know I could do the body work. Its not too bad, plus most of it isnt metal. But the metal part I couldnt do. I dont have a lot of experience with body work, but my uncle does some at a shop I could ask if I got stuck. Angel04-25-2006, 07:46 PMAnd I never worked with fiberglass > zanny04-29-2006, 04:48 PMNeed pics to help you out. Angel04-30-2006, 08:19 AMOk.

These don't show the clearcoat issue on the deck lid, around the antenna, or the "shotty" paint on the one part of the spoiler. Don't have pictures of those. zanny04-30-2006, 04:48 PMWow, that's a lot. I'm assuming you have the basic tools.
Your front lip needs to be sanded with 80 grit paper. Then, push the damage back together. Then use kitty hair "bondo". This is fiberglass strands in a resin. Just add hardener and apply. Easier to use than the fiberglass mat.
Then sand with 80 grit. For the finish coat, use regular body filler.
The rear wheel well needs to be sanded to bare metal, to take care of the rust. Apply epoxy primer to hold the rust in check. Sand with 80 grit lightly.
Apply body filler.
Around the vent, sand with 80 grit and apply body filler.
The front fender, sand with 80 grit, apply kitty hair, sand with 80 grit, apply finish coat.
Do you have the paint formula that's on your car? Angel04-30-2006, 05:05 PMThe rear wheel area isnt rust, it's hard to explain, but it isn't rust.

I don't have the paint code. zanny04-30-2006, 05:25 PMThe rear wheel area isnt rust, it's hard to explain, but it isn't rust.

I don't have the paint code.
Then just sand with 80 grit and apply filler to the rear wheel well.
The paint is tough. A good painter can blend the adjacent panels, so it looks all the same.
Another option is, to find a shop that needs the work, and cut a deal with them. If you were closer, I would cut you a deal. A thousand bucks for the repairs and paint is good. Offer them 800.00 bucks. PHOENIX04-30-2006, 06:04 PMfixing the front bumper and even the fender wouldnt be that bad, but where the body was molded together wouldnt be the best idea for a beginner to do. If you screw up in 1 spot, the whole thing has to be redone.

I would recommend paying the $1000 bucks, its not a bad price for the damage.

What they will do for your paint, is color match it using paint cards. If they cant color match, bring it somewhere else. If they are good, they will test out there matched paint on a little spot on your car to make sure they got it right. Chances are they will paint most of the side of your car to blend it.

I would recommend doing the whole car, in a few years, youll notice the old paint and new paint differences. PHOENIX04-30-2006, 06:09 PMThen use kitty hair "bondo". This is fiberglass strands in a resin. Just add hardener and apply.
