View Full Version : Selling the Quad Cam Turbo MR2 and giving YOU money!

Node04-24-2006, 11:36 PMI know what you guys are going to say, but hold on. I'm about to take on a new, VERY expensive build. Also I know this is not the for sale section but read on and you will see why I have posted here. Don't worry I'm not leaving the MR2 world though (hint hint :p ) I currently have four "project cars" in my driveway already!! That's right FOUR! Not to mention all the cars I have been working on at the MR2 guru's shop. Its just too much.

So, here's the deal. Admittedly this car is HIGHLY unusual. I am used to selling MR2's and other niche market cars but this is a little different. Aside from oil changes, its not exactly dealer serviceable. Nor is the car "smog legal" with its 3" non cat exhaust.

So, heres the reason why im posting in this section. I'm going to offer a finders fee. You heard right, I will pay $200 US to the first board member who finds me a buyer who takes the car home.

Now down to the car itself: I'm going to offer it two ways, painted a color of my choice or as it sits in primer. My reason for this is that everyone I talk to tells me I should paint the car a different way. So I figure I will leave it up to the buyer if he or she likes.

Well, on to the go fast bits. The was originally a 91 turbo with PW DL Mirrors etc.. It now has:

A 3.4 Liter Quad Cam six calendar engine 5VZ-FE with roughly 45K miles. It has no sludge and perfect compression on all six cyl's. Of course it retains the distributorless ignition but now has 2 step colder plugs.

Single Turbo Y manifold with a rebuilt Supra MKIII CT-26A (larger comressor than the MR2 CT26) That is coupled with a 3" downpipe, flex pipe, strait pipe all the way out the back of the car.

The turbo feeds through a trunk mount inter cooler core that has three charge temperature controlled fans. After the intercooler I have a Supra MKIII blow off valve that can be substituted for an RFL unit we have at the shop if you want that loud sneeze sound LOL.

The transmission has a Stage I copper/carbon clutch installed. Its very easy to modulate and holds quite strongly. The disk and pressure plate were new when I installed the engine roughly 4K miles ago.

The wheels are Cobra R replicas 17x9" up front and 17x10" out back (yes you can get Toyota center caps for them). I have brand new supra 712's up front but the 712's on the rears are starting to show sings of use  I wont bend the truth about what I do with this car  I have a set of spacers that could be used to space the rear wheels out more if MUCH wider tires are installed the rims but you would have to be up near the 300's before the tire would rub the strut (Z06 widths).

The body is a fiberglass replica of the TRD kit. Manufactured by Carisma in 2003. The panels are bonded on, NOT riveted to the car so they wont move around and crack after its painted. The rear space between the lights has been trimmed out and a mesh similar to that of the F-430 has been installed. The gas filler has been relocated under the drivers side wing and the side of the car has been fiberglassed smooth. No ugly squair door on this beast.

Now, on to price. I know that if I bring the car to a body shop I can probably get close to 9K for it. Like I said though, the color should be up to whomever buys the car. If I get no offers for the car I will paint it and continue to enjoy the torquey goodness. So, im going to offer the car at an even 8K. To you board members reading this that's ONLY $7800! since you yourself would be getting the finders fee. I also may be open to a trade of some sort but im really trying to make room for my new project. So, dont bother to ask unless you have something very exceptional I.E. I dont want your family Honda.

I know all sorts of people are going to ask about dyno numbers and what I have beat with the car. Thats not what this thread is for. Interested buyers should come see the car and I will be happy to SHOW what it can do ;)

I know these pics are crappy but I only had my camera phone on me today. Ill take some more in a few days once I get some people interested. I just wanted to post here first and let you guys know that im up to something BIG and you may be able to help me mark another milestone for our MR2 community.

Ebay + Autotrader + local paper.

I'll swap you an ES 300 for it. Dance_Business04-25-2006, 04:02 AMSend me the pics asap. If you are where I think you are, I could come see it this weekend...
B.S. (really my initials, no joke) Weasy2k04-25-2006, 01:21 PMwoot your buying a special car :) The next step is Oiol pump, standalone, cams and springs :P fun times Node04-25-2006, 02:33 PMIm located in Asheville NC 28806. That is the unpainted price I was thinking of. IMO, one hell of a deal. There are a few more things I plan to update before selling the car too. Im going to install some new speakers and some other stuff. Im also going to have jeff spray some tecprime on the car so its a nice clean smooth flat black. There is still a warrentee on the turbo for two more months from MR2 guru and I will stand behind my header for a year.

To get in touch with me directly about the car my mobile phone is 828_216-7719

Jim Dance_Business04-25-2006, 04:02 PMFor the game of phone tag: XXXXXXX.

Im still considering two different drivetrains for my new shell. One is a VERY large dissplacement alloy block. Im still waiting for the machine shop to figure out how large we can bore the sleeves. The other choice that im considering uses two CVT transmissions and will require extensive modification to the front end suspension of the MR2 including new hubs and perhaps a different steering rack ;)

Videos of the widebody should be up tonight. Oteck04-26-2006, 06:49 PMi smell an awd project :) Weasy2k04-26-2006, 06:58 PMoteck...the idea... ALLSHOTUP04-26-2006, 07:01 PMGood Luck on the sale Jim. I'm sure it will sale quickly.

EG N8s93turbo04-26-2006, 07:21 PMwhat kinda numbers is it puttin out? Weasy2k04-26-2006, 08:01 PMthere is none but based on using the dynos on tacomas...i would say upwarsd of 300whp+ Mister2.204-26-2006, 08:17 PMPut it on MR2Trader? :) SpeedballTrix04-26-2006, 09:22 PMOh man... I wish I had $8k.
Seriously this is one hell of a deal.

I wonder why no one on the board seems to want it?
Honestly If I had that kind of liquid cash right now I would go for it.
The car is sick the way it is and the potential is unthinkable. Mister2.204-26-2006, 09:35 PMHrrmm Luni04-26-2006, 10:17 PMYeah, Id buy it for 8k for sure.

Ill have to see if I know anyone whos looking to seriously buy an MR2. 20incher04-26-2006, 10:25 PMan awd drive project??? *gasp* does that mean you wanna trade me for my all trac?? Oh man Im almost tempted to take out a loan to buy this thing =P Node04-27-2006, 12:11 AMHere are a couple clips of the car. Keep in mind I will put the drivers side engine bay wing back on and the car will be all one clean flat color before its sold. Also the second half of this video is older footage with a smaller turbo and a downpipe only for the exhaust.

Enjoy

Indeed it does... IMO The only thing holding this car back from making 400hp or perhaps more is fuel injectors. With JUST the TRD additional injector controller you should be able to pull at least 350HP out of the car. Its already making close to 300ft/lbs or torque with just a modified FPR!! There are trucks making that much with 9 psi on the TRD supercharger!

Ill be putting an add up on OC and TN tonight. Any board members here that are seriously insterested should contact me VERY soon.

B.S. let me know what else you would like footage of, I have plenty of video memory left.

This wouldn't be the Volvo V8 mentioned in another thread would it? :) I'm just a curious little bugger.

I expect to come to the mountains late Saturday/early Sunday. Do I need to bring a cashiers check for a deposit? Or will a personal check do? This all assumes I love it in person as much as I do in here.:excited: :excited: I will have to make a return trip to pick it up. I need to catch you on the phone before 3pm eastern.... Node04-28-2006, 01:16 AMIf you do like what you see, I suppose a small personal check would be ok for a deposit. Assuming you would be returning during the week or something. We will disscuss that on the phone I guess.

I have a few new components I have been slacking that I wanted to install on the car, so if you decide to buy the car then Ill need a few hours to put them on so I will feel comfortable about you driving the car home.

Im still open to questions and offers till MR Dance Business comes for a test drive. Dance_Business04-28-2006, 01:38 AMThe only question I have is whether I see it Saturday evening or Sunday morning. I will have to return another weekend to get the car. My Vibe won't tow it:lol:

how about mr2 tow vibe :) DaveMush04-28-2006, 10:55 AMSome vibes are AWD... but I think the MR Truck would have more Tq and power to do the towing.... Node04-28-2006, 02:56 PMSome vibes are AWD... but I think the MR Truck would have more Tq and power to do the towing....

Hell, take the wheels off the vibe and the two could drag the car back to TN if you didnt mind all the extra gass it would use  stafebak04-29-2006, 05:13 PMEmailed you. Dance_Business04-29-2006, 08:35 PMAt 10am I'm driving! stafebak04-29-2006, 08:40 PMIf you get it, I'm jealous :( I want it so bad. Node04-30-2006, 12:49 PMSale Pending:

Thanks Benji. Dance_Business04-30-2006, 08:37 PMIf only I had been in it on the drive home! I got pulled (again), but this time the lucky charm worked. "Please slow it down, sir."
Deposit in, See you in two weeks. By the way, my email is not posted here... stafebak04-30-2006, 08:40 PM:'( I'm so sad. Congrats, you're a lucky man. Node04-30-2006, 09:34 PMWow, you drive fast. No wonder you get pulled so often  You had better get a jamming system for the MR2. I dont think that stealth paint will work against lidar.

Emailing you some quick info now. Ill revise it over the next couple of days. But its mostly quick knowledge about components and how to service things. Ill do a detailed wright up about where to get some performance upgrades for cheap in a day or two.

It was nice meeting you. Ill see you in a couple of weeks.

Jim Dance_Business04-30-2006, 09:40 PMUgh, nothing like pushing the Vibe. I was pacing a University of Memphis Cheerleader in a convertable Camaro for 2 hours, but I ran out of gas... Oh well. I'll look for the email. Node04-30-2006, 10:01 PMIts sent, you should have it. Take care of that 5vz mr2slow4you05-01-2006, 03:27 AMWoah how did I miss this sale. Can't believe your selling it, good luck. Weasy2k05-01-2006, 11:46 AM^^^ slow mr2much05-01-2006, 12:05 PMI can't believe I missed this opportunity! That's the best deal I've seen in a long time. I was just browsing for regular turbos for about that price with the plan of one day hiring someone to do a swap like that. I figured I'd spend that much on the car then that much again a couple of years later to do that kind of work to it!

If you make another one and sell it be sure to contact me (or anyone else selling a V6 swap at a bargain price)

wwhite *at* uwaterloo.ca Node05-01-2006, 06:45 PMWorking on one for TRDNY and then im starting my next build. I seriously doubt that when I am ready to sell my next car that it will go for such an inexpensive price.

The drivetrain alone is going to cost more than im selling this entire car for. mr2much05-01-2006, 07:03 PMyeah i figured that. A deal like that only comes along once in a lifetime :(

Oh well. good luck with your next build - I'm sure it'll be a monster! trdny05-02-2006, 03:41 PMcongrads NODE

Dnace: you should love the car. I love mine and I haven't even driven it yet. mymr2turbo05-02-2006, 03:55 PMGood luck with the sale man. I'm currently trying to sell mine also but I think you should have luck considering it has the 5vz in it already. Weasy2k05-03-2006, 07:54 PMyea that was a LOW price...VERY low for what it has! Node05-03-2006, 08:21 PMIndeed it is but there are still a few bugs to work out. Like, the car needs an alignment etc... Oh and paint, dont forget paint :) Weasy2k05-03-2006, 08:24 PMeye roll

fell like making Vband manifold? :) Dance_Business05-04-2006, 09:36 PMI'm near Boston, I'll call you Friday afternoon. Cool? Dance_Business05-04-2006, 11:11 PMWill everything be done by next Saturday Morning? I need to book a ticket like now, I would arrive at 9am. I'd need a ride.. Find me on IM. Node05-05-2006, 07:54 AMDont know about the "muffler" yet. Tom wont be back untill monday and T. P. is the only place in town that sells 3" performance exhaust stuff. Ill see you next sat morning. I will have Blair at the store so I can leave if I need to.

Hehe, see I told you I never sleep. :D Dance_Business05-05-2006, 01:42 PMAnd I work too much. Hence I am in the airport going back to the studio today, so I can get there by closing tonight. I think i would rather drive from here, with my luggage in the "frunk"! Would that affect the handling much? trdny05-05-2006, 03:14 PMDance make sure you give us a good run down on the cars performance. Node05-05-2006, 04:12 PMTRDNY, I turned your engine over and you have good oil pressrue and compression. Very close to starting up :)

DB can already give you some info on the performance. Dance_Business05-06-2006, 02:10 AMSuch as? Let me guess... 1/4 mile: 19 seconds? Oh, that might be the Vibe.
Probably not. A '93 stock MR2 Turbo posts 6.1 & 14.7 and C&D had a '93 Supra Turbo at 4.6 & 13.1. After the Bublegum Pink paint :D dries where will I be? Will I have the goods to sport that paint? Or should I plan on something a bit more tame to match the car? Node05-06-2006, 12:19 PMPink, now thats a color I hadn't considered. I dont know if the cops would pull you over because of the color or the massive powerslides you will be doing around town. Dance_Business05-06-2006, 03:06 PMI think I would refer to it's performance, subjectively speaking, as sphincter tightening. Yet Node and others keep urging me to add more hp... Any more juice in that car and I will need a colostomy! Though, later I may... Weasy2k05-06-2006, 05:53 PMyou willl....you know you will :) Dance_Business05-11-2006, 09:36 AMHey Node,
What's up w/ the exhaust? is it good or still on my list? let me know of anything needed before Friday midday. I'll be on the road a bit early, to see you Saturday around 9am. ween19105-11-2006, 09:39 AMpink!! thats flippin awesome. ive always wanted a pink car (not a gay pink) but i figured id have to back it up with hp first. i think it looks sick with some carbon fiber parts (ie hood, trunk, engine lid). let us see some pics when its done! Weasy2k05-11-2006, 02:09 PM^ what colour isnt gay pink? Dance_Business05-11-2006, 03:56 PMOUCH! It was a joke to begin with, though I personally do like pink. Some paintjobs are cool, regardless of color; some are not, regardless of color.
It will stay primered for a while. ween19105-11-2006, 04:08 PM^ what colour isnt gay pink?
i have an import mag from a few years ago that featured an s15 (i have a huge s15 fetish, im sorry) in hot pink with carbon hood. when i find it ill scan it and add it. i think it looked sick and i know it would own a good amount of cars.

and just think, how sweet would it be to just walk all over some dude and then have him realize "i was just beat by a gay ***, hot pink car!"????? ween19105-11-2006, 04:13 PMhttp://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/10/web/658000-658999/658144_52_full.jpg

the one that says "this ones mine" right about it is the one i saw in the mag (i think) but ill double check that tomorrow when i actually go home at some point. Node05-11-2006, 06:13 PMDB the car just left the body shop and the fiberglass is all lookin good. I had them throw a fresh coat of tecprime on there. The car loos AWSOME. I will admit, it made me think twice about selling her to ya.

Pink would be funny for about two weeks. I can see you driveing the car on the weekend and some kids in a civic pulling up next to you and laughing. Then you would drop the clutch, all hell breaks loose and their laughter slowly turns to tears LOL perfect :) Dance_Business05-12-2006, 01:04 AMCashier's check is cut. Ride to Tunnel Rd. is waiting. AND I've been not so nicely invited to Memphis Motorsports Park Saturday night... A crazy :screwy: client with a crazy '05 Corvette asked me to try the bracket racing! I laughed! Don't know exactly what he has in that daily driver, but I doubt I want to drive all day then race. Not unless I knew I smoke him:devil: ... That would be priceless. Weasy2k05-12-2006, 01:31 AMhahah im just pullin your chain thier DB :P

You will have a blast with this car...pink or not! Dance_Business05-12-2006, 02:55 AMThe gay jokes bounce off me. I'm in a business that used to have 90% gay staff, industry wide. I did not care then, and really don't care now. No problem. Besides who else in here spends all day in the arms of women? Node05-12-2006, 03:58 PMBesides who else in here spends all day in the arms of women?

See you in the morning. Dont forget to bring a LOT of CD's to listen to on your way home.

Gimme a call later tonight.

Jim Dance_Business05-14-2006, 01:06 AMI actually drove home slower in the MR2 than in the Vibe! But!, I became aware quickly that nothing I came across could get away from me. It was so easy to drive slower, knowing that you are to be feared. For some of you, I sound silly; I know this. You are used to massive hp and heavy torque, I am not.
I'll update from time to time as I get some things upgraded.

At this point the mileage is closing in on 6mpg! He said the mileage issue may have something to do with some routng of air intakes or sensors... On the way home it took 3 tanks, same as the vibeObviously I'm not the MR2 Guru(respect to Harry and co.) so I got lucky in finding this guy. Let me know if there are any notes to pass along tomorrow.
Oh and there is a MR2 here with a N/A Solara V6 here. However, mine still turns heads quicker. And the alignmemnt is much better, too.

see ya. Node05-16-2006, 10:05 PMGlad to hear the alignment is better. I know those big tires were causing some of the errrrr.. interesting handleing the car would do over cracks etc in the road. Got to love the traction though :)

You mentioned a leek in the coolent system when you got home. If you have not replaced the hose and refilled the coolent, it is likeley the stock ECU is pulling timing to keep the engine cool. Remember, much of that setup was used for prototyping. The blow through setup of the MAF could certainly contribute to the fuel mileage. I knew it was bad around town but JEEEZE! I thought that was due to my right foot LOL. Im sure you will get it all sorted out. You have a solid base to work with and EXTREME potential when you are ready for it. When Weasy releases a plug and play stantalone for that engine you may want to purchase it so you can get better performance and mileage.

Weasy, thanks for getting back to me so fast. I feel much better about the prospects of tuneing the car tomorrow. lateralG's05-17-2006, 02:04 AM--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did not paint it pink yet! You think that was an open invite?:omg: ween19105-17-2006, 12:47 PMpervert? I did not paint it pink yet! You think that was an open invite?:omg:

yet?? is that a clue?! i hope so!

glad to hear that you are enjoying the car, but that mpg rating seems rough on the pocket. what do you expect the mpg to be at once its fixed? Weasy2k05-17-2006, 01:36 PMwerd....

edit Dance_Business05-17-2006, 03:56 PMI don't know what the mileage should be. I know it was similar to my Vibe(running hard through the Mountains), about 28mpg, on the way home. I have no preconcieved notions, though it is a Toyota! Maybe I should... mymr2turbo05-17-2006, 04:15 PMSo how are you liking it so far? Turbotrav05-18-2006, 01:03 AMworked on it today. Car wasnt responding well to the mass air being in the boost pipe. So i relocated it. After that the factory bov was staying open to long allowing a big vacuum leak. I could tell it was a test car. It is pretty ghetto, but its really cool. You guys have too much time on your hands!!lol
I should be able to work out the kinks in it. Ive got to repair the wastegate(car only makes 1psi at the moment). And all the silcone vacuum lines were colapsing. It was weird looking at the 3.4 car and then walking over to the 3.0 car next to it and comparing them.

by the way.........Im Travis........first post!!!lol
Owned an mr2 since the first day i started driving.......Bought another a year later....no one would work on it....so i taught myself.....Built it up...blew it up many times.....bought many parts from alamo autosport when they were the only ones selling parts for mr2's....now im 27 and im just about the only one who works on mr2's in my area..... canadam05-18-2006, 01:21 AMWelcome to MR2Board, Travis :D Node05-18-2006, 12:16 PMWelcome to the board, Im glad benji has someone locally who can clean up the loose ends.

Ill be getting that replacement speedo cable in a couple of days. Should be an easy install for you. trdny05-19-2006, 07:27 AM28mpg in the mountains seems really good. Glad youre enjoying the car.

Hey Node got any good news for me? Dance_Business05-19-2006, 12:41 PMNode: I have to have bright lights to pass inspection... When I hit them, they go dark. Any ideas?
Travis seems to be somwhat bewildered by the car, but he may/seems to have more knowledge of 2's than anyone else here. (no offense to anyone I have not met.)
He seems to think that a new ECU setup would be the best direction now? Yes, no, maybe? Node05-20-2006, 02:50 PMDB, The lights are just due to the 16 year old high beam switch in the column. Something I planned on replaceing but the car sat at the body shop a few more days than I expected. There is nothing wrong with the wireing its just an old switch. If you just need to get through inspection and want a temporary fix you can wire in a high current toggle. Remind me to ask harry if we have a spare low high headlamp switch at the shop. Ill be there making a turbo manifold monday.

I agree completley that the car should have an aftermarket ECU. The stock ECU is mapped for a supercharger but does well with the turbo (asside from cold morning starts). I think with a good aftermarket ECU you should get close to 28mpg with that setup. Did you try moving the MAF for better mileage yet? Dance_Business05-22-2006, 12:49 AMAnd would the board have a suggestion/preference/rule of thumb for which aftermarket ECU for the 5VZ-FE / CT-26A setup I have?

Look for this in the EFI corner.... Trying to stay on topic. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
