Pages : [1] 2 SVX9208-31-2010, 12:29 PM.... SVX9208-31-2010, 12:37 PMMy original 5sfe took a nasty dive a blew a large hole out both sides of the block. Seeing as how I like to drive, as well as I like my MR2...it seemed counterproductive.
So I purchased a Gen3 from Baktash at EMSpowered. After I received it(thanks bak) it looked something like this.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r155/HostageHeart/Gen3%20Swap/IMG_1698.jpg
The dropping of the 5S took me and my brother probably about 2 1/2 -3 1/2 hours with both of us taking our sweet time and taking breaks, talking while we where working. That looked something like this:

Now that it was out lets look at that nice Exhaust I got(thanks JlxTurbo) which is an EMS 3" exhaust.

Old looking at new in contempt!

And Finally the most important piece of it all....My shop cat(might not be a beagle rocklizzard but she's damn helpful!
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r155/HostageHeart/Gen3%20Swap/IMG_1707.jpg
To be continued as I get stuff done. I cleaned my subframe up to look how it did from the factory. Still need to really scrub out my engine bay, as well as need a few more odds and ends. 1.intercooler, 2.axles and corresponding hubs, 3. looking for some decent wheels.
Not a bad start, but I already feel myself slowing down, as this is my first swap and we'll see how I do!
Thanks for looking. SVX9208-31-2010, 01:02 PMI've tried resizing 4 times, I give up. mr.asian.m208-31-2010, 02:50 PMnice to see more gen3 swap being done. i'll be keepping an eyes out on this thread. Maruki-kun08-31-2010, 04:41 PMman, your motor came with a lot more parts then ours did. rocklizzard9108-31-2010, 05:00 PMnice cat :P

the rubber parts are cut. rocklizzard9108-31-2010, 05:25 PMdamnit! SVX9208-31-2010, 06:08 PMThanks all.
Ku-sama - did you guys get the "swap" or just the motor?
Rocklizzard - get that engine man! I'm over here scratching my head at a lot of it lol. I'm still picking up necessary parts but still, I want to get it in and be done with it for now!
My time line is to finish before the end of September. Maruki-kun08-31-2010, 06:37 PMswap Foygroup08-31-2010, 09:10 PMWe got the swap, but from looking at your pictures, we did not get the metal cold pipe, or the large intake pipe you have straped to the motor. It looks like yours has the Cat too, we did not have a Cat on our either.
Good like getting this together. We are almost done. We need to get all the new GEN3 swaps together for a party when they are done. SVX9208-31-2010, 10:58 PMI'm down, a gen3 bro-down. We can pick a state in the middle and a place lol. rocklizzard9108-31-2010, 11:18 PMthat'd be sick!
too bad youre on the east coast bill!
we're both over on the west :P Foygroup09-01-2010, 04:36 PMI drive fast... or even better, the autotrain.... rocklizzard9109-01-2010, 05:01 PMautotrain?
well when were up and runnign over here, we should all meet up :P
get ku-suma in on this too :P Foygroup09-01-2010, 06:54 PMAutotrain, you take your car onto the train with you. You stay in the passenger cars, and all the cars are on a separate train car. When you get to your destination, your car is there with, kinda like luggage. rocklizzard9109-01-2010, 08:26 PMawesome! Maruki-kun09-01-2010, 08:45 PMautotrain?
well when were up and runnign over here, we should all meet up :P
get ku-suma in on this too :P
I just have a gen 2 :(
although next year I'm setting my setting my eye on a 94-95 MK2 and swapping in a 1MZ rocklizzard9109-01-2010, 09:08 PMaw i thought your green/black splatter was a gen3
sigh.
guess we'll have to wait til your 1mz is finished ;) beachbum09-03-2010, 08:35 PMAutotrain, you take your car onto the train with you. You stay in the passenger cars, and all the cars are on a separate train car. When you get to your destination, your car is there with, kinda like luggage.
really? wow thats cool I've never herd of this before. I guess if you don't feel like driving or racking up miles on your car this could be a good thing. Foygroup09-04-2010, 09:37 AMOk, SVX92 lets get an update so we can start talking about your build and not everything but your build. We can worry about the GEN3 Bro-down after we all have our swaps done. But that would be a cool thing to do. SVX9209-04-2010, 10:58 AMLol, well no updates as I'm rounding up odds and ends. I actually talked to YELLOW_MR2 last night. He came over and checked it all out. Since I don't have an intercooler yet, I'm strongly thinking of grabbing his(he's selling off parts from his 5sfte build).
I still need to pick up axles and hubs and am on the hunt for decent wheels. Other than that I've done a lot of just cleaning the engine bay and all the car parts.
I've been consulting online diagrams and speaking with a few in-the-know car guys in my are about the wiring. As Bak can't locate a gen3 harness for me I'm going to try and adapt my existing. So much of this information is spread around not to mention this is my first encounter with wiring in a car.
Oh and before I forget, I still have to drop my fuel tank....insert man-tears here. But as progress has been slow I haven't had a lot to worry about. While it's all out I figured I will also replace all accessory belts, major seals that could cause a problem later on.
That's it for updates, and hopefully soon I can show yall some visual bling once I actually do something. Foygroup09-04-2010, 11:10 AMPut away your tears, I just did my fuel tank removal and install with my 17 year old daughter. It was a piece of cake. Rocklizzard just did his after I told him how easy it was. It will be the easiest part of the entire build. I sent him a step by step on how to do it and he was fine.
Changing all the belts and hoses and seals is a great idea. Also check your timing belt and make sure the intake and exhaust cams are lined up at the right point. Toyota puts little drops of paint on the housing and the cam that line up when they are correct. I found that out after my motor was in and it was a PITA to fix it after. rocklizzard9109-04-2010, 03:15 PMagreed. i did my fuel tank with my 19 year old gf. she weighs 105lbs (i like em skinny :P ) and hates working on cars.
we did it pretty quick too. i put the front wheels on ramps to get the front up. then i jacked up the back really high to get good clearance. after that it was cake!!
i was shocked at how easy it is.
what seals do you plan on replacing?i need to do some too
was planning on valve cover (cause its getting painted) axle seals (cause of foygroup) timing belt and HFH and HFHOE SVX9209-04-2010, 03:41 PMI'm going to probably get the master kit that foy showed. It just will make sense as mine is going to be a slow build, as for putting the front on ramps no can do.
My car is basically on blocks right now and my cherry picker left to save a big block somewhere. So I'm gonna do it with 0 clearance, sounds like a party and bad times in the making. Foygroup09-05-2010, 12:19 AMI don't think you can do it with 0 clearance. It drops out of the car but it's pretty deep. I just jacked up the car and put it on jack stands. Had all four wheels up car was about a foot off the ground.
I say yes to replacing as many seals as you can. Especially the axle seals. If anything comes off, replace the seal. Also the HFH and HFHOE is a great way to go. I did not replace the timing belt of water pump, but kinda wish I did. Now that it's been moved to FabulousJ's shop, I may have that done as well. eckoman_pdx09-05-2010, 12:27 AMWell, seeing as there are two of you in Washington, if you all want to meet up when you are done let me know. I'm not too far, I'm down in Oregon. Mine's not a Gen 3, but it's a nice 92 turbo none the less :) SVX9209-05-2010, 01:21 AMmost definitely, I want a good west coast mr2 meet at some point. Not to mention Ecko should you know any of the portland 2 owners running a gen3 feel free to pass them my number if you could: 509-438-0699. Anyone that has done the swap before I would be interested in talking to.
You've got such a clean mr2 though.
I wish Foy was closer, I could sit back while you learn me some wiring. rocklizzard9109-05-2010, 02:46 AMagreed, zero clearance will suck/not work.
ill post pics on my thread of how high i was. it was so easy. i really reccomend figuring out a way to raise it all up
bill, why do you wish you did the waterpump?
timign belt, yes i understand why, but why replace the waterpump if it works?
eckoman, im often down in portland. and i even have to drive it down when it runs to register it! could meet up and chat while im down there :P
swing by abbys pizza while im down there :P i LOVE that place!
svx92, theres a meet down here in tacoma in a few weeks iirc.
idk if youll be done by then though.
also, it seems my order is on its way :) gen3 body harness will be on the way soon too. so after i get all that ill run up and you can try to convert your na harness to copy my gen3 harness (maybe? or if not im sure we can read all the posts and figure it out) eckoman_pdx09-05-2010, 03:40 AMmost definitely, I want a good west coast mr2 meet at some point. Thanks for the compliment. If I can think of anyone who's done a Gen 3 swap, I'll pass the number along.

The reason most people replace the water pump when they do a timing belt is that replacing the water pump involving removing and re-installing the timing belt, which is a long process if you do it yourself, and an expensive job if you pay someone.
That's actually pretty common on most cars. Replacing the water pump involved doing a timing belt job, so you might as well do it while you are in there. It's sort of like the HFH and HFHOE, you might as well do it while your in there. Also, on many cars the rated life (in miles) for a water pump is more than that of a timing belt, but less than that of two timing belts. Translation: the rated life of a water pump falls smack dab in the middle of timing belt changes. If it fails at it's rated life, you may find yourself doing another timing belt job before you need to, just to replace the water pump. In that regard, it makes more sense to just do it while you're in there.
Out of curiosity, why do you have to register your car down here? Is it registered in Oregon?
Definitely let me know when you'll be in Portland next. I'm down to meet up, chat, and eat some Pizza. It's always nice to meet other MR2 owners :)
Also, the meet you are referring to is on October 3rd if it's the one I'm thinking of. You're referring to the PSTOC Toyotafest 2010, correct?

the other car i have is a vw. the pump is run off the serp belt. so if i need to do it all i have to do is pull the belt off (its an auto tensioner, so i juts pull the tensioner back with a wrench, remove 4 bolts for the pump, bolt the new one on and put the belt on.
so the vw guys wait for it to fail, then buy a new one and have it on in under an hour :P
perhaps i should look into that as well though.
how much do gen3 pumps run?
i register down there because my dads in the air force. he's an oregon resident (newberg) so we register cars there to get tax free awesomeness. and no emissions :)
ill let ya know when im down for sure.
yes thats the meet! itll be my first mr2/toyota meet ever! SVX9209-05-2010, 11:14 AMI may drive my 300zx to it. I want to meet the rest of you deuce owners...see what I got myself into. I also was JUST in portland like 3 days ago. Me and some buddys on Thursday decided to go on an all day drinking binge. It was beautiful!
My oldest brother lives in Portland and I'm originally from the kelso/longview/rainier area. A MR2 meet is a must. Maybe go to the Oregon coast, as it's one of my favorite places.
But to the topic at hand: I was looking at how I've got my car jacked up, I'm gonna see if I can't squeeze it out. The back end is pretty high, I just don't know if it can wriggle the tank forward then slide it down a little. It's an empty gas tank so it shouldn't be too heavy to move about. rocklizzard9109-05-2010, 02:37 PMmoving about isnt too much of an issue.
you have to stretch the hardlines out of the way
and then slide it forward, down, then out.
how high is the front end off the ground? measuring from the front jack point under the rocker? SVX9209-05-2010, 05:51 PMThe front end is still sitting on the ground. as in I have the back end raised, front remained seated on it's wheels. So it sounds like a drop of the tank can;t happen this way? Foygroup09-05-2010, 07:00 PMNo, You have to move all the hard lines out of the way, then the tank drops about 12 inches to clear the under side of the car. Even with 12 inches you would be lucky, cause the back end of the tank has the fill tube connections which sits a little higher.
You also have to be able to get under the car yourself to unbolt all the hardlines from front to back. These are the lines for the AC and radiator. You don't have to remove them, just unbolt them from the car so they can be pushed out of the way.
Your face would be right up into the bottom of the car with the back end up and the front on the wheels. Foygroup09-05-2010, 07:01 PMEckoman is correct about my reasons for the water pump and timing belt. Those are my exact reasons. The only reason I did not do it is the motor only had about 30k miles on it. SVX9209-24-2010, 11:36 PMWell, no new pictures or much progress. However I wanted to state that my hopes for a quick finish are much closer.
Baktash has agreed to get my a gen3 harness, which should make this a much faster process for me!
So pictures to come with all my updates. As well as will show my engine, which to disappoint you all I will not being doing a whole lot with paint with it for the moment.
So look forward to more soon! rocklizzard9109-25-2010, 12:40 AMso youre gonna get a gen3 harness to drop in instead of fixing the NA?
get pics!! Foygroup09-25-2010, 12:19 PMListen, you've been hiding this build long enough. Let's see the pics. You've only shown 9 pics and one of those was your cat. I'm waiting for you to finally post the pics and find out you gold plated the whole motor.
Glad to see the end is in site for you, can't wait to see which one of gets done first.
Good luck rocklizzard9109-26-2010, 02:39 PMListen, you've been hiding this build long enough. Let's see the pics. You've only shown 9 pics and one of those was your cat. I'm waiting for you to finally post the pics and find out you gold plated the whole motor.

i think it'll be close ;) Foygroup09-26-2010, 02:43 PMx2!

i think it'll be close ;)
   SVX9209-26-2010, 03:37 PMNay! Gold plate will not adorn my engine, nor the bay! I'm gonna go with something more subtle and less bling-bling. rocklizzard9109-26-2010, 04:28 PMlikkeeeeee?????? SVX9209-26-2010, 06:14 PMTo be shown! I will make sure to get some pic's of it. I wouldn't want to ruin a surprise! Foygroup09-26-2010, 06:30 PMDislike!! rocklizzard9109-26-2010, 06:31 PMDislike!!
x2!
whats this barely update biz?!
might as well have not made a thread til its done ;) SVX9209-26-2010, 06:51 PMpffff....
Fine y'all can have the party without me. I'm sitting at work right now, so not much can be done you ass!:D
I plan to use mostly darker shades in the engine bay. I'm not a chrome sorta guy(no offense foy your engine looks phenomenal!). I'm not gangsta bling enough for it.
I'm all about shades and darker colors. I like to keep a low profile. Plus I know I won't clean chrome enough to keep it respectable as I'm a mere savage. Foygroup09-26-2010, 07:22 PMGangsta Bling. That's it, I'm naming my car that. I might even go to my dentist to get a matching grill. :D
If you actually meet me, you would find that just about everything I own is black. At one point my wife told me I could get any vehicle I wanted as long as it was not black. I came home later that night with a new dodge Ram truck (black).
My car is going to be a sleeper. All stock and plain on the outside, then "Gangsta bling" on the inside.
We just miss your updates. We wanna watch too, we are all just MR2 voyeurs anyway. ;) rocklizzard9109-26-2010, 08:12 PMso leave work and say hey sorry, mr2.com says i need to do work on my mr2! :P
im sure they'll go for it!
agreed on keeping chrome clean!
i dont want to keep up on it, and paint is cheaper :P
and i figure its a sports car, so it needs red! :P
bill, a matching grill would he hilarious!!
do it! :P
you wont
also agreed on darker colors.
both my cars are black, many of my shirts are black.
black is a mans man color! :P
now update us mr svx92 or i'll drive up there and update for you! Foygroup09-26-2010, 08:19 PMRock that's what we need stalkers to go out and spy on him. I have the camera for it. We will have to set up a mission.
As for my grill. I'm gonna do it for my trip out west just to prove you wrong. :p rocklizzard9109-26-2010, 08:34 PMi'll do it next weekend!
he'll never know ;)
do it!
i dare you! SVX9209-26-2010, 08:37 PM.....*waits in bushes*...*hears a twig crack* HEY! GET AWAY FROM MY MR2...Attack cat! NOW!!!

See now that was funny. rocklizzard9109-26-2010, 08:55 PMHAHAHAHA!!!! i saw the pic and busted up laughing!!
oh i'll get to your two!
just you watch!! Foygroup09-26-2010, 09:21 PMoh i'll get to your two!
just you watch!!
And your little dog too!!!! SVX9209-26-2010, 10:34 PMI'm just pumped that things are starting to level out for me. Progress is slow as I'm not super mechanical but I'm figuring it all out. So with any grace I either a) will find a slave child to serve as my mechanic lean-to or b) rock will become said slave child. rocklizzard9109-27-2010, 01:17 AMim down for slave labor.
i demand 3 grains of rice a day though....if you can handle that, i'll work for ya ;) SVX9210-05-2010, 02:44 PMBak had a 3rd gen wiring harness sent to me. Today I picked it up and couldn't be happier. Maybe this will finally push me to get crackin again on the 2.
Unfortunately with school and work and wife I have found little time to be in the garage.(not to mention I've been watching far too much tv...mad men, dexter, it's always sunny in philadelphia...too many good shows)
SO, hopefully I'll have something epic to show for once it's all done. I've convinced myself I'm going to do some breakdown of the gen3 and do most of the exterior pieces to the engine. I want to clean it up and hope to not touch it again for quite some time.
I'm trying to decide what to do with my engine bay. I want to spray it flat black. However I don't have a spray gun and worry about how a rattle can job will turn out. Not that anyone will be closely inspecting my engine bay color...
Anyway, soon I will show off some of the garage slut. Rock, crank out that car man. Come down here and finish mine. Foygroup10-05-2010, 02:55 PMGlad to hear you are now motivated to get done. As for the TV, there are devices that record shows for you now, i think they are called DVRs. Hmmmm.
Mine is running smooth now. Getting new axle seals and check out why my axle seems to be free spinning. After that, it will be fast enough to travel thru time. Just need a flux capacitor.
Looking forward to getting all three of these up and running. I say we all meet at Baktash's new location for a photo shoot. SVX9210-05-2010, 09:05 PMLOL, that'll be a hell of a drive! Sweet deal, I look forward to seeing more of yours. Especially with some shakedown videos of it doing some pulls. rocklizzard9110-06-2010, 12:54 AMthat would be a crazy drive!
could be fun though :P meet somewhere in the center, like my old hometown
could stay in our old house and head down :P
and svx, where are you at in the swap?
am i beating you yet?! :P
i hope ot get up there soon SVX9210-06-2010, 01:48 PMyour definitely farther that I am. I don't even have the engine in the bay much less some routine maintenance done.
I basically have my car apart and almost all the parts to put it back together. I think the only things I'm truly missing is axles and hubs, oh and a new fuel pump for the build. SVX9210-14-2010, 08:14 PMI'm still struggling on stupid stuff over here. I've got the majority of my interior out aside from the dash itself and the radio bezel. I'm having a hard time on my shifter bracket.
How the hell do you get the shifter cables out of the clipped in bracket or bushing that holds them on. I tried for awhile earlier and cannot see how those come apart.
I'm also having a hard time getting everything disconnected for my fuel tank drop. I've removed most of the braces holding on the piping surrounding it. However I'm having a hell of a time figuring out what to do with the very large bronze nut that rests at the front of the tank. Everything is so awkwardly placed down there that I have little clearance.
Anyway, that's my grumbling for the day. Foygroup10-14-2010, 11:39 PMIf you are talking about the two brackets on the tank, there is one on the rear that has a bolt on either side of the tank and it just drops right off. I don't know why, but the front bracket is different, there is a bolt on the drivers side, but there is a brass shaft that sits in a a smaller bracket. Unbolt the drivers side, hold the tank up with one hand, then push the other end of the bracket up toward the bottom of the car, you can then just move it out of the bracket and shift it a little towards the drivers side to pull it out of the area. Don't lose the brass rod, it's just sitting in there.
I am not sure about a brass nut. There is a set of brackets with cables on them, it has a brass nut in the center, but you can just leave that all in one piece and just pull the left and right bolts then the cable assembly will all come out as one piece, that is the e-brake assembly. I can't think of anything else tha thas a large brass part on it. How about a picture? rcracin10-15-2010, 07:22 AMThe fuel tank doesn't always drop out easily. Keep an eye on the connection from the filler hardline. Once that clears, it should drop out easily so long as you unbolted everything. It's as Bill said. The most front support is bolted on one side and swings toward the other side as it has a shaft/pin rather than a bolt. rocklizzard9110-15-2010, 02:29 PMI can get up there and help ya now :) SVX9210-15-2010, 03:28 PMlol, show off. Well anytime is cool with me hombre. My digits are 509-438-0699. If you feel so inclined text away and I'm bound to text back.
I got rid of the 5s today, had another forum member come and grab it for extra stuff that he needs on his 5s rebuild. So cleared out stuff taking up space.
Now I just need to bust some booticus and get things installed. I haven't changed a lot of things yet. Timing belt, accessory belts...hfh, hfhoe....the list goes on.
So like I said if you feel so inclined, you are more than welcome to come, point and laugh, eat, laugh some more while I struggle it out. Foygroup10-15-2010, 07:31 PMI remember those days. It's good to go fast again. I got to drive about 50 miles today to work out the bugs before I head to Bear Mountain Run. Leaving here in just a few hours. SVX9210-19-2010, 06:38 PMWell I'm still slowly tackling the car. I'm ordering up my fuel pump this week for installation assuming I drop the stupid thing. I'm trying to get a locals help with that. Aside from that the only piece of my interior still in place is basically my dash. removed the rest to get ready to pull the original body harness. rocklizzard9110-19-2010, 10:04 PMremoving the dash for the body harness?? ScotianMR210-19-2010, 10:07 PMHardly have to remove anything for the bodyharness to come out, you must be confused. It just runs to the kick panel rocklizzard9110-19-2010, 10:09 PMyeah. thats why i asked why hes removing the dash. all you have to do is remove the door trim and rear driverside stuff SVX9210-20-2010, 07:16 PMLet me rephrase, everything basically besides the dash is removed. I wanted to clean it all out really well as it was. So I just stripped the center rest, the back and all carpet forward. Door panels, headliner and dash are still in.
I haven't worked on it since though. The clips holding my shifter cables are frozen on there so I'm going to spray them down with some lubricant in hopes they decide to slide out.
I've found someone local to me who's MR2 savvy and I've con'd him into coming over to help me with the fuel tank drop. arber021410-20-2010, 07:26 PMare you talking about where the shifter cables connect to the shifter itself?
They have the urethane weird clips that should just pop out, just lubricate them when you pop them back in place with some white grease. I forget what is called rocklizzard9110-21-2010, 12:08 AMi know not of what clips you speak of arber0214
svx, you talking about the little L shaped clips like for the brake lines? arber021410-21-2010, 12:28 AMI was talking about where the cable connects to the shifter, maybe i am confusing them with the ones of a subaru has been a few years since i did a short throw shifter.Never mind i guess i miss read it, i guess he is talking about the clips in the armrest part of the car rocklizzard9110-21-2010, 12:31 AMi think you speak of the suby ones.
the mr2 has a clip for one and a bolt for the other.
where it ataches to the shifter.
the cable mounts are L shaped clips
i did mine a few nights ago :P SW21T10-21-2010, 01:50 AMHey man, heres the link to get that tank down. It's a 2 man job, if you need help let me know.
Removal of Fuel Pump on the MR2 (http://www.lovehorsepower.com/MR2_Docs/mr2_fuel_pump_removal.htm) rocklizzard9110-21-2010, 03:25 AMits not REALLY a two man job
or im just a badass :P
whichever :P
two DOES make it a little easier. but i wouldnt say it NEEDS to be.
foygroup said his daughter did it all on her lonesome iirc SW21T10-21-2010, 04:44 AMNo it's not really but when you do it your self the tank tends to land right on you LOL (happened to me)
Wow?! really she did? Foygroup10-21-2010, 05:40 AMI took the tank out. She put it all back in. SVX9210-21-2010, 01:27 PMWhatever...I think I'm getting called a girl now. This is just unacceptable. OUTRAGE I SAY! /sarcasm off.
Ya I'm being a little bitch....With a full load of work, school, wife..I get tired. His is my first big tear down on a car. So it's a learning experience for me. Soon to be over though and then I can show off the beauty.
I feel left out here rock, first ecko then you're talking about visiting aaron...where do I fit into this! I'm glad to see that your car is moving again though. Get that coolant issue figured out man. That would be horrible if you blew it right after swapping it. SW21T10-21-2010, 07:46 PMLmao way to have some enthusiasm. But yeah man need help bringing that sucker down give me a text, and I'll go.
I'm about to bring the tank down on the MKI as we speak, But I'm waiting on my dad to get here.
Foy: wow thats cool man, not a lot of girls work on cars.....well except for svx lmao JK rocklizzard9110-21-2010, 08:28 PMdont be too jealous svx!! i have to go town to oregon to register.
dads in the military so we register there.
i tired this past weekend and stopped with ecko since hes down there too.
and my registration didnt happen last time due to me going to the wrong registration office. so i have to go down again :P so thats why i said visit aaron
ill make it up there too i promise!!
now stop being a girly man and drop that tank! :P SW21T10-22-2010, 12:13 AMLOL SVX9210-22-2010, 12:51 AMWell if we're going to talk about girly men...uhmmm yellow. I had the privilege of struggling to pick up a 5s with me, omar(yellow) his brother or cousin(I apologize I forget) and his friend. That was not light, being that it still had most of it's coolant and tranny fluid in it.
No fun making out of you! I may ask for your assistance though with my tank. I've not heard back yet from my acquaintance. LMAO Yeah I'm no big person either and would say can be broken easily as I'm small. LOL it was my bro and the midget that showed up is my cousin.
I drained the pan today, didnt have nothing in but some water with oil, mainly trash was in it.
That not a problem as long as it's on my days off, I'd be glad to help. SVX9201-07-2011, 04:24 PMI figured I'd update this as it's been forever. My meet up with Rock fell through after a tragic timing belt exercise in the boonies of washington. So at this time with little to know experience with wiring I'm taking my car to a local shop Kaizeen speed.
They will be doing the wiring and actually seem to be really cool guys. I was worried as they seem to predominately work in the Honda area. Which I'm not a fan of. However looking at their skills in the CNC and Welding/Fab areas on their site I decided to give them a shot.
I'll update once she goes under the knife at their place. I've got most of the hard stuff out of the way. Just things like wiring(I know it's not that hard, but I have 0 experience with it) is killing me.
So look forward to new photos and kick ass running videos! Foygroup01-07-2011, 05:36 PMYay... Your back with us on the build front. Calling in professionals is allowed. I ended up doing the same thing for my last bits and pieces to get mine on the road. No shame there.
Good luck can't wait to see you get it on the road. SW21T01-12-2011, 11:01 AMHaha and you told me to stay out of honda world. Nah man your car should be safe, they dont only do just honda, its just more commen with them. rocklizzard9101-12-2011, 11:43 AM*sigh* failed attempt sucked!!
youre having them do just wiring?
i hope its not much!
you get the gen3 harness? its plug and play except two wires... SVX9201-12-2011, 07:59 PMYa I have the whole gen3 harness. Shit happens, and I'm just a real noob with this kinda thing. Most of my car experience has been replacing and setting up suspension.
It won't be bad. I just need to get it back together and out of the garage! SVX9202-11-2011, 01:59 PMupdate time:
So the MR2 was put on a trailer and headed to a local shop that does excellent work to help me out. I was prepared to do this from the get go, I just ran out of time with a lot of school, wedding(finally got that out of the way lol) and work just not enough time for me to really sit down and do this.
So within the next 2 weeks I should be riding in glory again. Look forward to seeing my raggedy 2 in action! SW21T02-11-2011, 04:14 PMThats awesome man! Did you see my MKI there? Foygroup02-11-2011, 05:53 PMSo you tied the knot? Your now a married man? Congrats.... Hopefully she wont tell you to get rid of the car because it's too small for your growing family.
I am glad to see this thread come back to life. Can't wait to finally see some pictures. Who knows you might even bet Cory finished on his build. Then he would be in last place of the three of us. harrell5302-11-2011, 07:42 PMHey man, I just came across your gen3 swap today and I had a few questions as I'm getting ready to do a swap myself. What made you pick gen3 over gen2. I've heard good and bad about both. I guess the biggest issue I have with the gen3 is the higher price. Also how hard was the swap with having just the motor instead of a clip. Having a clip would be nice because It would prevent me from having to buy a lot of parts but a clip costs almost 1k more. Did you get an LSD trans? From what I hear the MR2 uses a viscous type LSD which isn't very efficient. This is my first swap and I too have no wiring experience so that part I will need help with. Good luck getting your MR2 running. SVX9202-12-2011, 12:25 PMmy best advice if speed of the build is a factor is definitely get a clip. Especially if you plan on staying stock power, you can always sell of parts if you decide to upgrade.
I did the swap and I would probably get a clip if I was to do it again. I've spent a lot of time digging for good deals, which has slowed my rebuild a lot. Not to mention I'm doing just about every bolt on upgrade I could do.
I think it also depends on what your specific goals are in mind. Do you plan on sticking with moderate horsepower, as in under probably low 300hp range. Once you go past 400hp either engine will serve. You'll be going standalone and at that point you will be replacing most of the key components of the engine anyway.
So think about what you want out of it and decide from there. I wanted a solid car for DD that would be fast enough to keep up with newer cars without going all out drag monster with it. The Gen3 has newer electronics, no AFM, replaced by MAP. Stuff like that, so again it just depends on what you want out of it.
As for wiring, I would opt if I was you to get a full Gen3 body harness if at all possible. You can repin and several places on here actually will do it for you, but cost wise it's about 300-400$ for a body harness and it's about 300$ give or take some to repin. So I don't think either really matters, but I wanted the OEM harness.
All in all dropping the engine wasn't that bad, but it's a lot easier with two people. Me and my brother dropped that motor in under 3 1/2 hours.
My swap came with an LSD transmission, from what I've been told all Gen3's do, but that's another point of debate and I don't know the validity of it yet.
So to reiterate, if you want it running in a week, clip! If you don't mind hunting for good deals, get a swap and source the parts from there. SVX9202-12-2011, 12:28 PMSo you tied the knot? Your now a married man? Congrats.... Hopefully she wont tell you to get rid of the car because it's too small for your growing family.

well this was the 2nd time to the same girl. Last Feb. I got married at the court house and we just kind of rushed everything b/c we wanted to be married when we where getting everything written up for our house. Made the loan office feel a lot better about 2 early 20's individuals lol.
So on January 8th we finally did the actual wedding, which was paid mostly by us. Which slowed my build of the car and me doing anything due to the amount of extra-everything involved in getting married. Sadly it pushed the MR2 to the background and forced me to kind of neglect rebuilding it all this time.
But I should be done soon and driving free! Foygroup02-12-2011, 01:06 PMSweet deal. Congrats on the second wedding. You can always tell her you loved her enough to marry her twice.
Mine is running great now, but is heading back to the shop to get some new parts and paint, so I am hoping to be back on the road over a three week time period. It does not go in till March 1st, so Maybe all three of our projects will be up and running by then. rocklizzard9102-12-2011, 01:34 PMWho knows you might even bet Cory finished on his build. Then he would be in last place of the three of us.
hey now! I was driving mine before you! Mine had covered the most ground so far! Your denial doesn't make me not win! ;)
Whether or not its still running....uh....well...no comment :p
Good to hear svx92, sorry I was never able top make it out :(

At least having it done this way I can say "X-shop did my swap" so in the case it ever gets sold anytime soon there's no question on quality.Kaizen is a pretty serious shop and does a lot of cool stuff. Rock, you were driving it before me because you were driving it before it was complete. Then and only later you found out your plug wires were reversed, you had no antifreeze, your fuel pump relay was bad, and that's before all he'll broke loose on you and the motor got to be where it is today. Just kidding, any chance I can get to say I was first on the road I will take. I would have been out the door first if I wasn't traveling so much and didn't have a few things go horribly wrong too, like my CV Joints shredding and my electrical issue with it running pig rich to deal with.
I typically drive mine about 150 miles a day. I have since put on 10k miles since the build. But you will have a chance to catch up when mine is back in the shop for three weeks.
Either way, I would like to see all three of these cars up and running perfect by early summer. rocklizzard9102-12-2011, 04:24 PMouch!! low blow man!
antifreeze is over-rated! i usually run just water in the summer :P i finished it late summer!
but all other counts are true :(
haha i wont be catching you any time soon. ill be in last place fo sho.
shes gonna be down for a while :(
svx will have to come visit me and console me! :)
do it! Foygroup02-12-2011, 04:38 PMParts are showing up at my door each week. I don't know if I should continue with the same thread or create a new one as Part 2 of my build. Once the rest of the parts are hear, I will post up some pics. My basement is getting full.
Antifreeze also helps keep it from over heating in the summer. I like to keep my options open in case there is a sudden unexpected freeze over here on the East coast. We are close to 2012, don't know how we are all gonna die, but I wanna be prepaired.
Now you guys are gonna get together without me. Damn, I will have to find a way to make you jealous and come visit me. I did find out there is a store 2 miles from my house that sells solid CF parts for the MR2. They had CF door panels, center console, and full dash from top to bottom, side to side. Looked really good. Expensive stuff that CF. Just test fitting to see how it would look. Are you CF guys? Reason enough to be jealous? SVX9202-12-2011, 07:54 PMlol reason to be jealous but I'm gonna go for a alacantra/leather mostly interior. Less expense and a little cushier for my tired ass.
And rock I'm totally gonna rock the 2 up there once it's in good working order and everything has been proven reliable, no unexpected belt stretching or seals going. Foygroup02-12-2011, 07:58 PMI'm not a big CF fan myself. I like the original interior better than anything I've seen so far. SVX9202-13-2011, 12:44 AMredline goods makes some really nice interior stuff for the MR2, gives it an "upper scale/semi-exotic" look. harrell5302-13-2011, 04:34 AMThanks svx92, I'm leaning more toward the gen3. I plan on staying at about 275-300rwhp and using it as a dd and track car. The only reason to go beyond 300 would be fore drag racing which I don't really care for. Since this is my first swap and all, I want it to go as smooth as possible. What I don't want is a 5 thousand dollar project sitting in my garage for weeks or months.
I think I'm going to keep it stock for a while because this will be the first turbo car I've ever owned. I want to get used to it before I start moding everything. I will be changing the clutch, flywheel, fuel pump, and possibly the timing belt so I don't have to take everything apart again later on.
About The wiring harness, won't the clip come with an uncut one? The harness only goes to the fire wall right? When you say re'pin are you implying that the gen3 plug and the plug on my na won't match up? I know there will be some splicing involved but changing the plug sounds tricky. I am a fighter jet mechanic so I'm sure I could find a wiring nerd at work to help me.
I live in north west Florida, are there any MR2 enthusiasts in my area? I think it would be great to go to a meet or something. rocklizzard9102-13-2011, 05:12 AMThanks svx92, I'm leaning more toward the gen3. i think gen3 is a great idea. i would do it again.
if you want pretty damn fast and still pretty stock its for sure the way to go.
some clips have uncut body harnesses and some dont. depends on how they chop up the car. if you get a gen3 body harness you dont have to re-pin anything. you cut and splice one 1-wire connector. and then plug it all in. the only downside is that youll need to live without a door pin (overhead light wont turn on) and a rear speaker unless you wire those two in (which i did and its cake)
a gen2 body harness or an NA body harness will need to be repinned which i think is a pain. a gen2 isnt as much. bill did that and had little issue. NA to gen3 isnt gonna be too fun though. i just went with a gen3 body harness on my NA to gen3 swap.
as for being your first turbo car, it was mine too. its a great feeling. itll make driving any other car not as much fun :P
your a crew chief? what jet do you work on?
i work in support up here on mcchord for c-17's :P harrell5302-13-2011, 06:27 AMWhere is mcchord? I crewed A-10's in Germany for 2 years and now I'm at Eglin test working A-10's and F-15's. 15's are really cool jets but they suck to work on, they always break lol.
I'm really excited about building this car. I wanted to work on cars before I joined the airforce but things didn't work out the way I planned. Thanks for the advice now all I need is to save up enough money.
By the way, I was wandering if my MR2 is rare or something. It is a 92 hard top with no power steering or abs. Really it has no power options at all, from what I hear their a lot lighter than any other 2.(maybe 2,600 lb or so) Any idea how many of these they made? I had a 2 with power steering and t-tops but I traded it for this one. No power steering feels really good in a 2, feels like I have more control of the car and the suspension is a lot stiffer. Foygroup02-13-2011, 08:57 AMHarrell53, the three of us have been doing our swaps together from a distance (Svx92, Rocklizzard, and mine). We all started about the same time, but are each doing the builds differently.
Mine is a GEN2 Turbo to GEN3 Turbo swap. It's not too hard going from turbo to turbo car as the wiring and most of the parts match up well. I have a build thread in the show off section as well.
As for planes, I am not in the service, but A-10s are one of my favorite planes. They fly around my house all the time up here in Maryland. The Maryland National Gaurd is stationed about 15 miles from my house and they have 21 of them I believe. They have got to be a much easier plane to work on, and they seem to come home no matter how much damage they sustain.
Good luck on the build. Butters02-13-2011, 12:00 PMshhhh my build is sneaking up on everyone hehehe.
i ready for our gen3 meet rocklizzard9102-13-2011, 02:23 PMmcchord is up in washignton state :P
and a-10's are the most badass planes ever!
i hear they can fly with only part of one wing and only one engine!
when i join (im a civilian hire right now) i would LOVE to be an a-10 crew chief!
but anyway. back on topic, yes a hardtop is a rare model. hardtop turbos are even more.
i have a hardtop but it has power EVERYTHING so i hear mines a little more special :P (means i cant sell it or ill never find another :( grrr ) Foygroup02-13-2011, 02:56 PMshhhh my build is sneaking up on everyone hehehe.
i ready for our gen3 meet
Butters, this is the worst kept secrete on the interwebs. Butters02-13-2011, 04:03 PMyes yes it is... lol rocklizzard9102-13-2011, 05:00 PMworst kept?! i still haz no details!! Foygroup02-13-2011, 05:19 PMHe has been stock piling parts in the house for a long time while he has been commenting on our thread. Getting all the ideas he can before he pulls the trigger. Not a bad plan for doing it right the first time. Now he finally pulled the trigger an dropped cash on the GEN3 motor to match up with all his parts he has been buying. Butters02-13-2011, 07:56 PMYep! I've basically bought every little thing possible. I ordered the gen3 on friday SVX9202-14-2011, 03:28 PMI love a-10's. Such a beastly jet. Maybe not the fastest in our current service but definitely what of the heftiest. It's really cool to watch them unload on tanks. Come to think of it, that is basically what they are. Tanks with jet engines and wings attached. harrell5302-17-2011, 04:33 AMDoes anyone know a reliable source to locate a good gen3 clip? I've been looking everywhere. Most of the web sites that say they have clips look a little sketchy. I don't want to get ripped off or get a bad engine. I found this one site called mr2wharehouse.com. They had lots of clips on their site and other mr2 services, but when I called, the number was out of service. I tried E-mailing them and the E-mail address no longer existed. What happened to this company? They looked like a great source for clips. rocklizzard9102-17-2011, 04:36 AMwhy do you want a full clip?
i'd reccomend a motor from ems and then piece the few other parts together.
if youre set on a clip call they MIGHT be able to get you one.
if not crw garage (on here) can get you one Foygroup02-17-2011, 09:49 AMWhen Rock says buy an engine from EMS then piece some other parts together. It's sounds like a lot of work, but it's really not.
If you just want to do a full swap, the motors from EMS come with the motor, motor harness, and ECU. If you get it with the tranny attached, then it comes with the LSD tranny and axles or axle stubs.
I got mine there. I did not need to buy anything, however, I chose to puchase many other things while doing the swap just because it was the prudent thing to do. These are all normal maintenance items that just make sense to do while the motor is out.
Buying a clip will do basically the same thing. The big difference is, with a clip, you will also get additional body parts and suspension that you may or may not need. This can be a blessing if you need some of the parts or can sell them, or a curse if you have to go thru the trouble of getting rid of it and don't have the means to take care of it yourself. You may not have the room for half an MR2 shell laying around for a while. Bak@EMSPowered02-17-2011, 02:42 PMWhen Rock says buy an engine from EMS then piece some other parts together. Hey, wait a minute. That's what I did.... :)
Actually it is what I did. I got my engine, intake, turbo, intercooler fan, engine lid fans, and many many other things at the same time. I could have used some of the parts that came with the engine, but I wanted a little more customization. EMS was great at making sure I got parts that would compliment each other so I did not end up purchasing things twice. harrell5302-19-2011, 01:10 PMI checked out the engines on EMS, looks great but Why such a high price on the 3rd gen with trans? Are these engines in better condition than other engines? I looked around on E-bay and found the same thing for as low as $1600(that's motor, trans, ecu, harness, etc...). There are 3rd gen clips for $3500 shipped. For $2950 it better be a damn good engine. Im willing to spend more $$ for the better engine but how am I supposed to tell which engines are good or bad, seems like a gamble to me. Foygroup02-19-2011, 02:44 PMEMS stands behind their motors. They only get motors with around 30k miles on them. They compression test them all before shipping them over. Once you get the motor, they will stay with you during the build to provide any additional information you need. If you need additional parts they will work with you on a deal for new equipment bundled with the motor or as you do the build. I have been working with EMS on mods to my car for almost a year now. I got my GEN3 motor from them back in June.
I don't think you will get that from ebay. I don't know how many miles are on those motors or what condition they are in. Same with a clip.
The benefit of the clip though is you get a bunch of extra stuff you may need if your car is missing or has broken parts in addition to the motor. If not you can either sell them or dispose of the rest of the clip as you see fit. For me, I did not have the room to have half a car sitting around my house for months while I did my build. Getting the motor dropped off at my front door on a pallet all ready to go was great. I used all the parts, the only thing left after my build was a wooden pallet and some packing materials. harrell5302-19-2011, 04:34 PMWhen you say bundled, are you talking about adding things like intake and exhaust, inercooler, motor mounts, and so on for a discount price? That could be worth it! I trust you when you say ems is a good company. I read through most of your build, quite impressive, inspiring to say the least. Thanks a lot for all the advice, looks like I'll have to save up more money if I want to do it right. kevinl02-19-2011, 04:35 PMWhen you say bundled, are you talking about adding things like intake and exhaust, inercooler, motor mounts, and so on for a discount price? yes bak will give you a discount if you order more parts it's a bitch getting in touch with him though Foygroup02-19-2011, 06:30 PMThanks, I have been having a lot of fun building the car out. I am trying to do it all right the first time. In fact, I just took a break from laying under the car (installing sensors for my new gauges), to answer this thread comment.
Yes, he gets very busy and goes MIA every once in a while, but always comes thru with your stuff at a good price. I have five ways of reaching him and sometimes even that is not enough. But when you get him, he will talk to you all night if needed till you have all the info and parts you want.
And to back up what Kevin just said, yes, EMS will sell you anything you want off their web in a bundle and make you a good deal on the bundle. harrell5302-19-2011, 07:20 PMThanks, I have been having a lot of fun building the car out. Wow, you bought your motor back in June and your still working on it? Or are you just finishing up the little details. How long did it take from the time you dropped the motor to getting the car back on the road? My swap probably won't take too long, I don't plan on getting parts chromed or polished. Even though it looks really nice I can't justify spending that much. I'll go the cheap rout and just rattle can everything with high temp paint. Foygroup02-19-2011, 09:09 PMNo, No, No..... Its been a daily driver since September. It took about two months of actual work to drop the motor and put the new one in. The physical part of dropping the motor and re-installing the new one two about 2 weeks of working about 2 or 3 hours a day. The remaining 6 weeks were because I had issues with the wiring and the motor running rich, and then there was an issue with the tranny because the old axle seals leaked and the CV joints shreaded. Beyond that, I travel a lot, so there were weeks at a time that the car sat waiting for me to get home.
If I focused on it. I think 3 weeks would have been more than enough time to get it done.
I am working on it now, getting it ready for new gauges, new injectors, new fuel rail, and water/meth injection.
But lets stop blowing up SVX92's thread with talk of my car. If you want more info, I am about to start a new build thread regarding the new work I am doing.
I am hoping all this talk of cars and stuff gets SVX92's car back from the shop sooner so he can post some video of some drive by action. SVX9202-19-2011, 10:37 PMhopefully soon enough. I've been digging into reliability. Buying lots of oem while i'm in there parts. Timing belt....*coug, don't want to get stranded anywhere..cough* just basic maintenance that I figure safe rather than sorry.
It's been slow for me, but foy is 100% correct that this can be done faster. Most of us have just been taking our time or doing a lot of extras. For me most of the slow pace has been me hunting for deals on EVERYTHING. I've spent a ton less than I expected, but at the cost of months of down time. rocklizzard9102-19-2011, 10:46 PMI see what you did there svx92 :(
I had an oem new timing belt from lithia! (as well as other misc basic maint parts) ......buuuuuuuuut a tbelt cover bolt rattled loose and fell in... and evidently bolts and belts dont play nice together

Ok, I translated it for you. :p
I was not in a hurry, I had other cars to drive as well. I would rather spend days taking my time and doing it right, than rush it and kick myself every time I looked at the work I did. That's why I spent the entire day today running new wire, in new wire loom, making my own custom harness for my gauge pod and new dash.
Edit: Damm it, Rock got in before I could finish my comment. rocklizzard9102-19-2011, 11:00 PMOk, I translated it for you. :p

without them youd be wandering aimlessly through the dark! :P SVX9203-06-2011, 05:31 PMDoes anyone know if the accessory belts are the same for Gen 3 and Gen2? SW21T03-06-2011, 06:39 PMDont think it would matter as long as the belts fit and have the proper tension rocklizzard9103-06-2011, 06:48 PMjust take your old belts that came on the motor and have them size it up and get you a new one Foygroup03-06-2011, 07:24 PMI believe it is a different part number. I ordered new belts for the alternator and AC when I did my swap. I got them at Lithia. Aaron will be able to tell you. SVX9203-07-2011, 12:11 AMThat's why I asked in here, I asked in my open order thread for lithia and he hasn't gotten back to me. I hate to pester people with PM's as I can be an obnoxious son of a bitch. Foygroup03-07-2011, 01:10 AMI can look on my order history, but I'm out of town this week. I can let you know next week if you have not gotten an answer. SVX9203-11-2011, 03:09 PMNew question, what did you all do for coolant hoses for your cars? I've got a special order right now on a Samco Sport silicone coolant hose kit for my car. Cost is about 227$ but it'll look clean(went with all black, no blingy colors) and be all silicone(longer durability).
I'm just curious what you guys did for hoses as I didn't really see a better option and figured why not upgrade them now. Foygroup03-11-2011, 03:21 PMI agree, upgrade them now. I went with OEM hoses. SVX9204-19-2011, 10:12 PMGot bored today and took off my turbo/manifold heat shield. This is what I came away with after about 3 hours of scrubbing.

But yes it looks clean and even better to see your back to working on your car. Nice.
I have been busy working on my interior for my car. New thread will one day follow.
Please keep it coming. SVX9204-19-2011, 11:34 PMMost of my problem is waiting on 3rd gen parts. It's not that I'm really happy about waiting, but don't have much choice. For example that silicone hose kit, 8-10 weeks for receivable package, ordered it 7 weeks ago, still nothing. Just saying man, it blows when you do this all kind of haphazard.
I appreciate the support though, I figure I might as well really clean it all up while I wait. Not much else to do! rocklizzard9104-19-2011, 11:37 PMholy sheet! you do have an mr2!! ;)
jk bud
good youre doing work!
are you gonna polish it? or paint it?
i still gotta make it out there.
i did a test run out to moscow in the VW two weeks ago. and oregon last weekend. she did great. i know i can explore my way out there now haha. SVX9204-20-2011, 03:15 AMhey man! Long time no talk. Well anytime that you feel like doing a road trip down this way, I'm more than open to. I've got a car that could use some love, but I've just been sitting on my hands mostly waiting for the never ending list of needed parts to roll in.
As the precautionary lad I am, I've purchased a lot of "do it now" pieces to save myself from being back to where I started with this project. rocklizzard9104-20-2011, 01:10 PMdude i texted you the other day! it hasnt been that long! haha
those do it now pieces will do you good!
also make sure you do correct timing :P so you dont do what i did hahahaha.
but yeah i love that side of wa. its another excuse to get over there! ScotianMR204-20-2011, 01:52 PMI got the samco hoses for my car as well. It was easier than finding each and every oem part number :P Foygroup04-20-2011, 01:52 PMI have piles of do it now stuff to complete. I just need to get time to do it before prime driving time.
I got the Berk Technologies GEN3 hose kit. It had enough hoses of various sizes to complete my build. I was told the red hoses would fade to pink eventually, but I have put 15k miles on my car since the build and they look as nice as the day I bought them. Only took a week or two to get them though. SVX9204-20-2011, 02:11 PMya, unfortunately that is only a vacuum kit. I needed coolant hoses and such. It's all good though, just one step at a time. I'm just tired of looking at it now and Want to get it moving. it's been about a year of downtime so I need to fire this bitch up! Most definitely, the dry weather lends itself to more go fast time. I was just in seattle picking up a new transmission for my 300zx. It was raining all 24hrs of my visit. rocklizzard9104-20-2011, 04:06 PMyou were over here and didnt visit?! how rude!

Not my fault, this was a dine and dash. I grabbed said tranny and moved my ass back to where I belong.
When you getting your car moving again? I would love to have another car to model mine after. Although that may be unwise given your cars run time...;). J/k
If you ever feel like you need to dry out head over. It'll be boring with my car dead, but you can see all the goodies I've got horded from various vendors. rocklizzard9104-22-2011, 02:42 AMno worries man :P
itll be a month or 2. gotta pay for my last quarter of classes then i can finish the mr2.
hey! rude! my demise was 20* of timing.
so just dont let me do ignition timing and youll be perfectly fine
everything ELSE works! haha
id be down to come visit the good side of WA sometime!
ill look at when i have a good weekend i can make it over Foygroup04-22-2011, 08:33 AMRock.... Come on... You were mean to that car. Let's see all the great learning experiences you had...
Connected the power lead of the alternator to the ECU ground fried some wire and an O2 sensor. Mean...
Ran with no antifreeze till it froze and had to be thawed out. Mean...
Ran with a couple spark plug wires reversed for a perior of time. Mean...
Ran with broken fuel relay, then rigged it to work. Mean.
Ran with 20* of timing. Extra Mean.
Did I miss anything?
I think she is mad at you and this engine rebuild is just your way of making it up to her.

"you know how to cut to the core of me baxter"
i didnt fry all that :P just ONE ground wire to the o2! so ha! and i connected power and ground to the alt :P not switched. :P
antifreeze is for noobs. in the summer i usually run distilled water anyway. its properties allow for better cooling i have read!....just forgot to switch back :P i figured it gets so hot in the summer a nice ice bath would be refreshing!.....
i blame the PO for wires! :P yes i didnt check  but i figured those japs knew how to do it right! i didnt move a single one from when i got the motor!
got me with fuel relay...however, i followed your advice with the spade connectors on it ;) so you helped with that torture!
got me with timing. no excuse for my noobness there :P damn you adjustable timing guns!!!
enough with the call outs :( weve established its broken already
youre just jealous mine is going to have higher comp, and bigger shinier insides than you, bill! :D
if you want it to live done give it to emma!
she went almost 10k on her last oil change! it was BLACK
she can get quite forgetful Foygroup04-22-2011, 03:12 PMJust keeping you grounded (see what I did there?). Thought you would appreciate that someone actually reads your threads.
I know what your talking about with Emma. My wife drove her Durango with no oil and blew two pistons. Ended up buying a new car. When asked why she drove with no oil for a week as a DD, she said I was out of town and she didn't know how to check. When asked why she kept driving when the pistons were banging, she said I never leave the keys to my car home when I travel so she could not use my car. My response was, "Exactly, now you know why." rocklizzard9104-22-2011, 03:45 PMbu dum ch! i see what you did there! :P
ah, i guess there is a silver lining :P
hahayeah i remember you saying that
i finally taught emma how to check oil!
yeah leaving the keys at home could be bad! SVX9204-22-2011, 08:34 PMLOL! well said bill, I loved it. I'll upload some more useless pics tonight of my random "shining" of parts and my new air box.
Oh and I've taken some second thoughts about letting a local shop Kaizen do much to the car. She's been trailer ready and waiting for awhile now, but due to these coolant hoses I've not done anything with it.
I may end up trailering the MR2 to KO Racing in Portland(well close to portland) for the swap. I would feel more accomplished doing it on my own but hey, them be the breaks. Foygroup04-22-2011, 09:07 PMIf your gonna take it somewhere, ey seem to know what they are doing. rocklizzard9104-23-2011, 04:37 AMKo is building my bottom end. Krishna is a real cool guy. itll be 1800 total
but im getting a bunch of parts from them too.
just to put together the rotating assembly is like 250? i think? i can get back to you on that
you want them to just put the cams in?

Jordan should let me know when you go to KO so i can go with you to take them my motor. Ill pitch in for gas. SVX9204-24-2011, 05:22 PMNot set in stone yet. Still feeling out my options on that. It was a good feeling having it all cleaned up and moving on to glory.
Looks like it'll be a little bit of a wait. However I've waited this long...so whats a few more weeks-ish. Hope to update this with a running Gen3 in the near future! Leaking oil cooler fixed and car should be available early Monday morning for a return trip to home.
I was very happy that this ended up being relatively minor. However the bill was not minor. It came out to 3,200$ however that's not just install, a lot of it was various seals, bits, machining the axle to fit the LSD, belts, timing belt included, HFH, HFHOE, idlers...you get the idea.
So all in all I couldn't be happier and assuming it runs right without fail from now until eternity runs out, I'm good! SW21T07-03-2011, 02:52 AMSo your picking up monday?? SVX9207-03-2011, 03:00 AMya, actually flying down, my wife's father offered to do so as he has frequent flier miles. Which actually worked out alright.
Sorry to say in my haste to get my stuff figured out today I hadn't asked him about your build, I will most certainly talk with him Monday when I get my car.
He won't be at the shop it sounds like, so I'm actually getting my car from his home. spitfire860507-03-2011, 03:09 AMlooks good man but beware of the speedo sensor swap its a b^%$@ SVX9207-03-2011, 03:49 PMFortunately this wasn't done by me and all the important parts, like the speedo gear where done by a certified mechanic.
Downside: Cost me and arm and a leg.
Upside : My Gen3 is more or less a factory install and should run as such.
Thanks for the kind words all and I look forward to posting up new pics. Foygroup07-03-2011, 06:58 PMVery good to hear. I am looking forward to seeing some actual pics of this this put together , maybe even a video. I know that is about as rare a sighting as Big Foot but I have hopes too. I think this means all three cars are on the road then right?
We need to make some plans. SVX9207-03-2011, 07:59 PM"frodo baggins, come forward, show them the Gen3!" "council gasps!" "THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE GEN3!!!!"
Nerd moment over/
Indeed we do need to have that meet. I'm excited to post up my first video of me driving it. I'll have a good 3 1/2 hour drive home to report on how it feels. This will be my first turbo car I've owned. So needles to say I'm very excited.
I will say that in the future I doubt I'll be doing much swap/builds just for the sake of expense. I did enjoy this but the cost came about 1700$ more than I had planned. rcracin07-04-2011, 12:06 AMfinished up my 3rd and last mr2 yesterday. so done working on mr2's. I just need an aftermarket exhaust. when my recirculated dump tube opens, my car hits a brick wall because the stock exhaust is so restrictive.
I have two exhausts lying around that don't fit properly. Need to modify them. fml rocklizzard9107-04-2011, 01:53 AMyou should come up here before you go home!!
id even meet down south a little if ya want so we can show off! Foygroup07-04-2011, 01:12 PMMukesh, put a screamer pipe on it and call it a day. No more restrictions.
Cory are you planning a Pre-meet without me. You can't do that without me knowing, I have the all seeing eye. Whenever GEN3s get together I can see it, and I have my fast black stalion to chase you down.
Ok my geek moment has ended too.... rocklizzard9107-04-2011, 02:33 PMhave spock beam you over and meet with us good sir! your living 3000 miles away puts a big damper on things :P
ok my geek moment has ended? SVX9207-05-2011, 02:13 AMSorry man, was on a super tight schedule today. Had a lot of homework and needed to drive the thing home. Was great, car is running phenomenol, and I can say that it exceeded my expectations.
I let my father drive it, came back with an ear to ear grin. Great car and couldn't be happier with the results.
I say that sometime soon, however I'm gonna have a hard time going a long ways, the reason being is my school work is very fast paced as this summer quarter is barely a month and a week long. So it's cramming a usually 2 1/2-3 month course into a little more than 4 weeks. Let me know though, I do come out of my cave every now and then.
stay tuned for video/pics! rocklizzard9107-05-2011, 02:26 AMno worries man ill be out there soon enough! ill come kick it and we'll have a bunch of mini gen3 meets and make bill jealous  eckoman_pdx07-05-2011, 01:20 PMno worries man ill be out there soon enough! ill come kick it and we'll have a bunch of mini gen3 meets and make bill jealous

Or you both could come to my PDX MR2 2K11 meet this summer here in Portland, and see other MR2's as well. I'm finishing the details and hammering out a date. Don't worry. As soon as I get the dates nailed down, I'll post up a thread and try to get it linked to on the opening page of the forum, same as last year. Right now, I'm trying to decide what works best between 2 different dates. Foygroup07-05-2011, 11:17 PMOr you come over to one of the meets over here on the East coast where we do it right.

Hey, I pulled 25 cars and 40 people on less than 10 days notice last year. Not bad.
Plus you don't have a dyno on site there, nor an on site BBQ. Foygroup07-05-2011, 11:54 PMNo Dyno, but the town did have an entire festival for us with rides and cotton candy, and pit beef, with about 100 MR2s there and a "spirited" run thru the mountains. Good times had by all.
I would go to any meet, 100 cars, 25 cars, 2 cars. Hell I like just going in front of my house and stare at my own car. So no, I would not put you down for your meet, I would love to come over there myself... eckoman_pdx07-06-2011, 12:26 AMNo Dyno, but the town did have an entire festival for us with rides and cotton candy, and pit beef, with about 100 MR2s there and a "spirited" run thru the mountains. Ok, cool. That meet sounds fun. Last year we pulled 25 cars and 40 ppl on like 10 days notice. We did a run from Portland to the Coast via twisty Hwy 8 as well. Most people turned back and returned via Hwy 8 once at the coast, but me and one other person made a giant loop up the coast to the Oregon/WA boarder, and then back up.
I'm with you. I'm ok hanging out in front of my house and just look at the cars, lol. rocklizzard9107-06-2011, 12:55 AMNow did I ask you to pay for my gas? How could you miss out on a meet like that?

Never. Too much noise for me. I'm picking up an Apexi exhaust tonight. spitfire860507-06-2011, 10:14 PMthat dude wont do that shit again .. at not at a meet anyways lol eckoman_pdx07-07-2011, 08:11 PMthat dude wont do that shit again .. at not at a meet anyways lol
It was actually his car to begin with. It had been stolen some weeks earlier, and he saw it at the Honda Tech meet, so he got into his stolen car and started it with his keys.
The thieves had traded it to an unsuspecting girl for her Integra. She hadn't bothered to look into anything (though lack of paperwork and lack of title should have been a clue), so she traded her Integra for it and took it to the meet.
The guy who owned the car saw his stolen ride there, got into it and started it. She thought he was stealing her car, and freaked out. Everyone assumed the same thing as she did at first. Then the Police finally came.
I think the moral of the story is: Don't ever by a car without the proper paperwork. rocklizzard9107-07-2011, 11:41 PM^^^ agreed spitfire860507-08-2011, 11:54 PMvery true... SVX9207-09-2011, 11:34 AMHere ya go corey, as best as I can.

Use a high temp header paint on it, or have it ceramic coated. SVX9207-09-2011, 03:18 PMQuick Question: I seem to have oil coming from either the back of the turbo or somewhere near the downpipe and it is giving a very light coating of oil on the heatsheild and hot pipe. Anyone know what causes this? Is it possible I've got a leaking oil valve?
HFH and HFHOE are both replaced, oil seal for oil cooler was replaced. Maybe a cracked return line?
No pooling on the ground, nothing on the ground in the garage. So it can't be much oil otherwise I would assume I'd see more. Gonna check my oil levels tonight when I get off work and probably change the oil. This is the first time the car has had fresh oil in it since I'm guessing 95-98. So maybe this is just all the start up kinks. rocklizzard9107-09-2011, 06:52 PMthe oil feed/return could be leaking. and dude.... do NOT tell me you didnt change the oil before you took it to him/started it.... PLEASE tell me you did....otherwise i will drive over and i am stealing your car now... SVX9207-09-2011, 08:54 PMOil got changed, came out perfect, honey/clear colored. If it is the oil return that's annoying. I'll have to see if more accumulates.
Are you paranoid my engine is cooked lol? I would say I'm alright. I've checked everything and nothing appears to be off really. Feels good, no start up issues, no odd running. Sometimes a little break up it sounds like when it's 95-100 out(can hear a little back fire). Possibly this is just my 3inch through exhaust.
***EDIT***
definitely an oil leak somewhere near the oil cooler/downpipe. Hoping it's a cheap and easy fix. I'm not sure how much total oil I've lost but I can say for sure that it's losing oil. eckoman_pdx07-10-2011, 03:02 AMOil got changed, came out perfect, honey/clear colored. Check the oil feed/return line, as Cory said. The oil feed/return line can get tweaked when removing and reinstalling a turbo, so I'd imagine the same thing can happen with a motor install if the line was messed with. Check that, and try tightening it up, replacing the seals for the flange if you have to. Be careful not to tweak it worse though. If it's bad enough, you can have the flange machined flat again. SVX9207-10-2011, 03:19 AMIt actually looks like it might be my valve cover leaking oil. It seems that the corner closest the timing belt is spitting out small amounts of oil. May not be the only leak but would appear to be one. I can put my hand near the valve cover and feel air coming out of it. Idk if this is common, however I feel it doesn't bode well for my car. eckoman_pdx07-10-2011, 04:26 PMIt actually looks like it might be my valve cover leaking oil. Hmm You might try removing the valve cover, installing a new valve cover gasket and making sure the "seal packing," PN:08826-00080 (aka FIPG) was used in the proper locations. If the FIPG wasn't put in the proper places, that might explain the corner leaks.
I've attached a PDF from the 91 BGB which shows where the FIPG should go. I doubt it's much different on a Gen 3. You might want to check to make sure all the valve cover bolts are tight too. SVX9207-10-2011, 04:52 PMThanks man, that was what I was thinking too about the bolts. Given that I didn't have Kris down at KO do anything with the valve cover it stands to reason this was this way prior to it being put in. I'm gonna try and tighten the screws, however a valve gasket and allen type bolts are a must do next.
Hope it all works out haha. SVX9207-11-2011, 05:07 PMUpdate 2.0: Definitely a valve cover leak. Gonna replace and hope that's it. It's a good size leak that caused me to loose about a 1/4 to 1/2 quart in a week. So Gonna nip this in the butt and hope that's the last of my issues. rocklizzard9107-11-2011, 06:32 PMwow thats a lot of oil man!!

I like a car to look like it's used not parked in the shade every saturday. Just clean OEM quality looks. spitfire860507-11-2011, 08:48 PMmaybe you could just go and use like a whole can of engine degreeser at a car wash and just pressure wash it thatl make it really clean then but some tire shine on some of the rubber and plastic parts then youll be ready for a car show (thats if your satisfied with the look/performance of your engine) SVX9207-12-2011, 01:21 AMYouTube - MR2 Valve cover Leak/ Misc broken Things (http://youtu.be/c7QnLxTgQ18)

+1 thats what it is for sure man.... SVX9207-16-2011, 12:59 AMIt would also seem I've got some boost creep/over boost issues. When driving especially at night when it's high 50's low 60's I can feel power pulsating. I thought it might be a slipping clutch but I've not noticed it during the day.
Gonna install my MBC and see if I can get it to stop, also need to get a boost gauge to monitor what is happening. No good trying to guess on it. rocklizzard9107-16-2011, 01:49 AMMbc + no boost gauge is bad juju

DO NOT install the MBC until you've installed a boost gauge. Get a boost gauge ASAP, especially since you think you are creeping to begin with. MBC + No Boost gauge = No Motor... rocklizzard9107-16-2011, 04:48 AMwerd SVX9207-16-2011, 02:56 PMI decided to throw some octane booster into the car, feels a lot more stable. Cory you where spot on, seems I'm probably getting some serious timing going on. So looks like I need to dial it back and invest in a meth kit or something. rocklizzard9107-16-2011, 09:03 PMyou shouldnt NEED a meth kit though. thats the issue.
even when i was at 20* of timing on the dizzy i didnt really feel it pull timing SVX9207-16-2011, 10:24 PMHmm, well it is considerably hotter over here though. When ambient air is anywhere from 89-101 i'm sure it's not doing my cooling any favors. However I agree that at my horsepower range and setup I shouldn't need anything. I honestly don't understand the wavvy boost delivery. I'll address that tomorrow with a cheapo boost gauge to at least see what it's doing.
Sometime you should pop on over or maybe I'll road trip up and you can give it a quick drive. I mean it didn't seem to have an issue with 220 miles of driving without much of a stop. So I find it odd that it just felt like this the other night. I've also thought about possibly having some crap gas giving some bad running conditions. I filled up today and all seems good.
I'll investigate more and report back, also going to check my spark plugs. Everything is new though, so I'm guessing none of the ignition components should be fouled or bad yet.
Gotta get a compression test done again too, as I want to make sure that everything is still in order. SVX9207-17-2011, 12:44 AMTo compound my constant worrying, The engine/drivetrain makes some rough noise at around 2500rpms, mostly alot of exhaust buzzing, but almost feels like it could be my clutch chattering.
I decided to check for a dead cylinder tonight, pulled each of my spark plugs while the car was running, 1-4 all caused idle to drop and for the engine to shake a bit. So seems that all are firing and all should have some compression. Will do further research into that as well. I'm wondering if a gooped up fuel injector could cause pulsating power with the lack of fuel delivery?
Sucks that it's the weekend as I work during this time so I can't really have any of this checked out by a reputable mechanic either. I've done some of my own checking around, looking at all the turbo pipes and made sure all the couplers where secure. Nothing seems out of place.
