View Full Version : Tip:Old Leather Steering Wheel

RuggishBone08-29-2010, 07:55 PMI recently found out that i can make an old leather mr2 mk1 84-89 steering wheel look new.
first get a box cutter or knife and then cut down the stitching from the inside of the steering wheel then peel the leather back and then u should see the original material steering wheels should be made ~RuggishBone

Nice tip! oldmancolin08-29-2010, 09:34 PMdude! that's dope! so simple, why didn't I think of that? What;s the material underneath like? spongy? tacky? actually black? any way you could get some better, clearer photos up? dirocyn08-30-2010, 07:05 AMThe material underneath is black, hard and rubbery. It's a fine steering wheel, much nicer than cracked & peeling leather, though not as cool as a leather-covered wheel that's in good shape. oldmancolin08-30-2010, 11:19 AMYeah, I managed to find a slightly better pic elsewhere. I'm gonna go take off the leather later this morning. Thanks! RuggishBone08-30-2010, 11:25 PMnp but after u take off the leather there is some glue u need to clean off, its easy to clean but the end result is worth it oldmancolin08-31-2010, 11:41 AMYeah, I took it off yesterday. It looks and feels great, thanks for the tip! Archidamus-R09-02-2010, 08:16 PMOn some cars, the leather steering wheel is just a leather sleeve sewn over the plain vinyl one . . . And glued down, of course. Looks like the case here. ;) SDub2009-06-2010, 12:02 AMSweet!!!! I've got to tell my buddy about that one. Btw Arch that collegehumor video almost had me pissing my pants. traintech8609-06-2010, 05:31 AMi had this with my 89 4runner. the plether or whatever the hell it is would rub off and make a mess everywhere. 1 morning i pushed it back a little and decided i would see what it is like without it. i like it far better without it on! the material under is the same as the center of the wheel. its kinda stiff rubber. deadball09-27-2010, 05:44 PMHas anyone tried this with an 88? I have 3 spokes on my wheel. PushFromBehind09-29-2010, 04:00 PMHas anyone tried this with an 88? I have 3 spokes on my wheel.
Yup! I did it on my 88 the day I brought it home from the dealership! Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
