View Full Version : Carbon Fiber or Fiberglass Painting?

Swirved07-16-2010, 04:48 PMI am going to buy a new engine lid, hood & windshield wiper cowl for my white mr2. I dont really like the two tone look or carbon fiber at all so i plan on having everything painted to match. I am willing to spend the money for the more expensive carbon fiber if its stronger, more durable, and takes paint well. But if fiberglass is better for painting i might have to go the cheaper route. Any information, tips, advice will be gladly accepted. Trying to put a deposit down on my engine lid in a day or two and want to know which one to go for.

Thanks! CJMR2T07-17-2010, 11:25 AMBoth are the same in the aspect of painting. The CF parts will be stronger and lighter if constructed correctly...

I personally dont much care either for the two tone look of CF and have paint exterior CF parts to match on all the my cars that I've installed them on. It isn't really any different then painting any other composite material part. OptionRacing07-27-2010, 02:06 PMi will go with CF because the fiber glass + paint will be more expensive than CF and probably more heavier CJMR2T07-27-2010, 02:21 PMHow would standard FRP + paint be more expensive the CF + paint???

Yes, CF if laid up correctly will be lighter and stronger, but the cost of a CF part is significantly more the the same part in FRP (usually)... OptionRacing07-29-2010, 02:32 PMI guess maybe I say it wrong.
FRP + paint will be more expensive than CF but
CF + paint will be more expensive than anything else CJMR2T07-29-2010, 04:12 PMYeah, the OP was specifically asking about painting CF cause he doesn't like the 2 tone look with bare CF. The topic was never about if plain CF was cheaper the FRP + Paint. MANDALAY08-01-2010, 08:38 AMCF and epoxy much better in resisting heat and less likely to warp.
FRP will warp. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
