View Full Version : Turbo VSV for boost control

christo4_9905-24-2010, 07:16 AMi have a haltech e6x and a 3rd gen.Anyone know if i can use the turbo vsv for boost control and if so how to wire/configure it? CJMR2T05-24-2010, 04:25 PMI'm not sure about the specifics for the haltech, but as long as the output control is PWM (pulse width modulation) which most are then the stock solenoid can be used.

Reading your documentation for the haltech will tell you what type of control its capable of and how to wire it.

If it does do PWM, then there are only two possible ways to hook it up which depends on the configuration of the haltech. Basically one wire will be hooked to the haltech and the other to either power of ground (again depends on the haltech). christo4_9905-24-2010, 04:31 PMhey...CJ? do i know you man.Did i sell you a border kit? i am in need of turbo exhaust btw. CJMR2T05-24-2010, 04:40 PMNope, not me however, we might know each other since I did grow up in valrico and I've only been in lakeland for about 3 years now. karl05-24-2010, 05:55 PMI'm not sure about the specifics for the haltech, but as long as the output control is PWM (pulse width modulation) which most are then the stock solenoid can be used.

i don't think the stock VSV is fast enough for PWM control. the stock ECU uses it as a bleed for the wastegate line- when activated, it just bleeds a specific amount of pressure off the wastegate to bump the boost up to 10psi. the pressure is controlled by the size of the ports in the solenoid.

if you need a VSV for boost control, grab an EVAP valve from any mid to late 90s GM. they're designed for PWM control and are dirt cheap. drive it at about 20Hz. CJMR2T05-24-2010, 06:36 PMI could be mistaken, but I could of sworen the Gen 3's were pwm from the factory. If not then what would expand the gradual step down of boost. I've seen the boost drop progressively with the onset of knock... I thought Gen 2's did it too but its been so long since I've messed with one so I'm probably mistaken but I still think Gen 3's are.... time to scope it I guess. I think that it is possible, but difficult. It's been my experience that pwm valves have a range of travel which will control flow, like a pintile in an idle valve. It's difficult for me to explain, but since the valve is designed to be on/off, an extremely small amount of movement of the valve will result in a large change in flow so it would need to be very precisely controlled compared to a valve designed for pwm. CJMR2T05-24-2010, 07:16 PMSomething else of interest about the Gen 3 vsv and why I think they are pwm. I have different Turbo, manifold, and an external gate. The gate has a 10psi spring in it where as the stock ct20 actuator is set to 8psi.

With the factory controller hooked up (as per stock) I'm limited to 13psi (same as stock). If intact it were a simple on / off calibrated bleed, I should be able to get 15psi since my base is already 2psi higher yet I can't get more then the stock 13.

I don't know, maybe something is funky with mine somehow but I doubt it.

On a seperate note, the gm evap control valve are really good for the job and as stated, they are cheap. karl05-25-2010, 09:02 AMi could definitely be mistaken. in fact, i hope i am. it would be nice to have another cheap valve for boost control.
