lucky_charms03-12-2010, 02:35 PMis there any color that looks good on the mk1 other then black and white......has anybody painted there mk1 some crazy color like purple or anything like that....pics please scottohno02-17-2011, 12:35 AMblue mica. its a metallic blue. pics upon request, theyre on my droid and have to do it later. supraguy@aol02-18-2011, 05:12 PMI think the MR2 also looks great in red and pearl blue.
I would love to see one in a metallic copper color, just for
the sake of seeing what it'd look like.

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.luxist.com/media/2009/07/bondlotus09.jpg mr.asian.m202-18-2011, 05:29 PMi don't really like green. but, this was pretty nice

Factory colors on the MK1 included.... white, black, grey, silver, red, orange mica, blue mica, light blue, dark blue, tan, gold and the "sherwood edition" (which was tan and dark grey). scottohno02-19-2011, 08:54 PMthere is a paint code bank somewhere...

all three MR2 generations are here Toyota MR2 Paint Codes and Galleries, Brochure and Commercial Archives (http://www.toyotareference.com/mr2)

it shows what colors, and what years. also shows the paint code (in brackets) muffinman02-20-2011, 11:27 PMDamn-it Scott!!!!!! You did it again!! This thread is almost a year old. lucky_charms02-20-2011, 11:49 PMwhat does it matter if he brings up old threads or not (ive seen the other post from like 2005 that he revived) scottohno02-21-2011, 12:30 AMI did the other one for a  this one I revived cause its a cool thread and I had some very helpful info. muffinman02-21-2011, 12:42 AMwhat does it matter if he brings up old threads or not (ive seen the other post from like 2005 that he revived)

cause some of them are ******* annoying. granted yours never got any replies so it's hardly reviving.

like the one with the guy with MK2 who asked for a color suggestion for the center piece between the tail lights. People keep bumping that with suggestions but if they would just read it then they would know that the poor guys car caught fire and almost burned down his house and could have killed him but yet people continue to suggest colors. :wtf:  Oteck02-21-2011, 12:51 AMhow about this color, it's factory and 2 tone metallic red

i hate how rat rods found there way to imports

*runs* scottohno02-21-2011, 01:12 AMThey do. The rest looks like my 86 used to, but white. Mine was black and made the 2 tone less noticable lucky_charms02-21-2011, 01:22 AMwell atleast the lip is in one piece it looks like scottohno02-21-2011, 01:47 AMyeah but the minute you remove it the paint is gonna crack off. lucky_charms02-21-2011, 09:07 PMthis is true...any more colors...i kind of want to see what a purple one would look like scottohno02-21-2011, 09:11 PMi got blue mica, and it even looks decent dirty. excuse the stance of the car, the rear is on dollies.

its a dark blue, maybe slightly metallic. it looks great, but my plastic bodykit has the paint flaking off. it wasnt properly prepped.

get automotive rustoleum. you can paint the whole car, primer, paint, and clear for less than $100. lucky_charms02-22-2011, 07:51 PMna im going to get pro spray primer for cheap and then just seal it with there sealer until i decide on a color scottohno02-22-2011, 07:55 PM:rolleyes: i hate that dirty ricer look. lucky_charms02-22-2011, 07:58 PMwell it does the job because i dont want to do all the work to do the primer paint and clear then do all the work over again just because i finaly figured out the color i want scottohno02-22-2011, 08:29 PMthats my point. hold off on the paint. lucky_charms02-22-2011, 09:07 PMyeah i get your point i think that im just going to repair the little bit of rust i do have...replace the finder and pop out the dents then just primer those areas scottohno02-22-2011, 09:26 PMprimer and match as close as possible with the rustoleum auto paint. its really decent for a spray can... lucky_charms02-22-2011, 10:09 PMyeah i used the krylon before and it came out great for a rattlecan paint job..the krylon can has this adjustable tip and it doesnt kill your fingers and forarms either scottohno02-22-2011, 10:18 PMi used rustoleum auto paint on my dads whole truck. lucky_charms02-22-2011, 10:29 PMdid ut have the traditional tip to spray out of...if so did your arm(s) hurt and do you have pics of the truck scottohno02-22-2011, 10:38 PMi have a pic somewhere on my phone, but i took it cause my dogs were all poppin their heads up to see what i was doin. no close ups but it looks 1000x better than primer IMO lucky_charms02-22-2011, 10:53 PMoh yeah i want to see the pics because honestly i dont mind the primer look as long as it dosent stay primer scottohno02-22-2011, 10:56 PMi have a pic somewhere on my phone, but i took it cause my dogs were all poppin their heads up to see what i was doin. no close ups but it looks 1000x better than primer IMO scottohno02-22-2011, 10:57 PMugh damn internet. remind me tomorro. lucky_charms02-22-2011, 11:05 PMyeah scottohno02-22-2011, 11:09 PMima try it as an attachment. click to enlarge ;)

BTW the truck is REALLY dirty with winter road grime. the paint job turns out to be a good gloss with the automotive paint. lucky_charms02-23-2011, 12:02 AMthat actualy dont look bad...what you do as far as prep work and hows the spray pattern scottohno02-23-2011, 12:23 AMSand to bare metal, rattle can gray primer, spray.

The spray pattern is ok... it required some.wet sanding by hand, but results were worth it. I suggest clear coating it too.

Those 92 chevy pickups had defective primer on the white ones and blue ones. It flakes off like nothing. This stuff is 2 years old now. No peeling or flaking, it holds up really well. Still shiny and kept outside. lucky_charms02-23-2011, 12:30 AMyeah it came out cleaner than i thought it would...i think that i might actualy go this route with black just to clean up the paint...did you fill any of the dents or no scottohno02-23-2011, 10:56 AMnope lol. bondo is NOT my thing. it takes too long. lucky_charms02-23-2011, 11:55 AMbondo actualy isnt that bad for me..it just smells horrible to me...but i think this is what im going to do...you have swayed my decision scottohno02-23-2011, 11:57 AMYES!!!

after all, we dont wanna be the new dirty ricer crowd.... lucky_charms02-23-2011, 06:08 PMthis is true...i want to sticker my lip though toyotaspeed9002-23-2011, 09:07 PMThose 80's and early 90's vehicles had defective primer on the white ones and blue ones. It flakes off like nothing.

fixed.

this was what my black mr2 looked like when I originally rattle canned the whole thing.... sanded the whole car down (probably down to the original primer... maybe a bit lower in some areas) and also removed quite a bit during painting....

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y82/toyotaspeed90/MR2/DCP_0126.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y82/toyotaspeed90/MR2/DCP_0050.jpg

this wasn't a gloss black.

after several years of neglect (not all by me) it hasn't held up all that well, but it still looks decent. Kinda looks like 80's paint that's fading now. toyotaspeed9002-23-2011, 09:08 PMI should add.... it took a couple cans to complete:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y82/toyotaspeed90/MR2/DCP_0127.jpg

this was it last summer:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y82/toyotaspeed90/Auto%20X/DSCN0021.jpg lucky_charms02-23-2011, 09:19 PMwow i really like the flat black it came out alot better than i thought it would look...how long did it take you scottohno02-23-2011, 10:00 PMit takes awhile, and its totally worth it.

did you clear coat yours afterward, TS90? Calcium02-23-2011, 10:22 PMMine didn't turn out too bad in yellow

http://mr2.zhutiblog.com/com/forums/mk2-body-kits-exterior-modifications/Toyota-MR2-58650-ok-so-i-just-rolled-my-car.html scottohno02-23-2011, 10:33 PMyou have a flat tire. good thing its only flat on the bottom.

easy fix: jack up car, rotate wheel 1/2 turn. it will now be flat on top. at least the top doesnt contact the road :) lucky_charms02-23-2011, 10:34 PMim not really a fan of yellow but it looks nice scottohno02-23-2011, 10:35 PMwere just looking at paint quality here. Calcium02-23-2011, 10:36 PMyou have a flat tire. good thing its only flat on the bottom.

Thanks for the protip, did you know that you can forgo rotating your tires by just driving, because they rotate as you go along. lucky_charms02-23-2011, 10:43 PMyeah i realized that it was about quality but i was just saying that i dont really like yellow...i read the article and thats really nice for a roller. scottohno02-23-2011, 11:30 PMyou have a flat tire. good thing its only flat on the bottom.

easy fix: jack up car, rotate wheel 1/2 turn. it will now be flat on top. at least the top doesnt contact the road :)

how did i get a thanks for this?:lol::ugh: lucky_charms02-23-2011, 11:57 PMso for people who have rattle caned before...would you do it again scottohno02-23-2011, 11:58 PMbeats the hell out of rust and faded paint, so yes. lucky_charms02-24-2011, 12:00 AMyeah...even though its the "dirty ricer" look as you say scottohno02-24-2011, 12:09 AMyeah...even though its the "dirty ricer" look as you say

no, primer is a dirty ricer look. if you use primer, you must use paint. you want to avoid sanding the ENTIRE CAR to get the clear coat off, dont you?

BTW I HAVE HEARD that primer absorbs water, and loses its ability to adhere to paint. anyone have info on this?

please do paint. the yellow car looks good. it was primered and painted, wasnt it?

i suggest primer, paint, paint again, and clear. sand with 220 grit between coats of primer and paint. applying a second coat of clear for extra durability cant hurt. lucky_charms02-24-2011, 12:14 AMyeah the primer absorbs water but you can seal it..but i do see your point..im most likely going to prime then paint and maybe clear i really like the flat look scottohno02-24-2011, 12:21 AMas long as its done with paint... but i think youd be better off with a gloss. i can only vouch for the spray gloss. lucky_charms02-24-2011, 12:26 AMif i can find like simi gloss in a rattle can then maybe but its most likely going to stay flat scottohno02-24-2011, 12:29 AMthey have semi gloss auto paint. i vouch for the RustOleum AUTO paint and primer. i dont know what it is. it just seems like higher quality. lucky_charms02-24-2011, 12:35 AMalright cool im going to check out the rustoleum because ive never used it but ive used the krylon and it was way better than i expected for a rattle can scottohno02-24-2011, 12:40 AMon a quick search online, i found primer and touch-up paint. dont use the touch-up paint unless youre prepared to spend more. not worth it IMO.

look at auto part stores and hardware stores. i will look at work when i go there on Friday and tell you what we have. lucky_charms02-24-2011, 12:44 AMi looked on there website real quick...what primer did you use..the etch, filler,or the straight to metal one Calcium02-24-2011, 07:35 AMhow did i get a thanks for this?:lol::ugh:

I did it for the lulz toyotaspeed9002-24-2011, 01:23 PMmine was semi-gloss, not flat. I didn't want a full gloss.

yes, I clearned mine.

No, I woulnd't do it again. I did everything short os using my compressor and a gun to shoot it.... it would have been a lot faster to get the correct paint. I now have a gun and plan to spray my wifes car. scottohno02-24-2011, 01:24 PMThose air guns are difficult imo muffinman02-24-2011, 04:40 PMThose air guns are difficult imo

NO WAY!! Those guns are extremely easy and the paint goes on great unlike the runs you'll get from cans. scottohno02-24-2011, 04:58 PMI had problems with the paint being too thick, pressure being inconsistant, etc etc. muffinman02-24-2011, 05:00 PMFor starters you have to thin the paint and run it through a filter. You need a good compressor and the gun has an air pressure adjustment also. scottohno02-24-2011, 05:03 PMI had a crappy compressor and a cheap gun. It sucked. lucky_charms02-24-2011, 06:27 PMi would love to paint the car with a gun...but i dont have a compresser to run a gun so im stuck with the rattle can for now muffinman02-24-2011, 06:32 PMThe harbor freight guns are decent and cheap. You can rent a compressor for a day and all of that will probably cost you less than all the cans you will need. lucky_charms02-24-2011, 06:56 PMyeah i heard about the harbor freight guns but i heard they are not that great of quality...but again for the price you cant expect the best quality scottohno02-24-2011, 07:30 PMthere are many ways to do it.

i guess the gun would hurt your arm less, but do what i did: get it in the garage, seal all windows and doors with a few buddies and a few cases of beer, and spray away. when you feel to F'ed up to walk, go outside and get some air.

NOTE: tape off all windows and lights BEFORE you start drinking. lucky_charms02-24-2011, 07:34 PMyeah good point...tape before you drink scottohno02-24-2011, 07:36 PMand drink a lot. you dont need a mask if you're in the bottom of a bottle

im just kidding by the way. USE IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA, or you will feel really good afterwards. lucky_charms02-24-2011, 08:01 PM:lol: yeah ive been thinking about making like a custom paint booth out of like pvc and plastic scottohno02-24-2011, 08:14 PMkeeps the overspray off your tools. lucky_charms02-24-2011, 08:22 PMyeah that and it keeps the dirt and dust and everything like that from touching the wet paint scottohno02-24-2011, 08:25 PMtouche'

be sure to sand between coats! lucky_charms02-24-2011, 08:28 PMyeah i know that...i just got to figure out how much all the plastic and pvc pipe will be to make a booth scottohno02-24-2011, 08:40 PMyou dont really need that until the last paint coat and clear coat. sanding the coats will create dust. muffinman02-24-2011, 08:45 PMI bought two guns from HF. One cheap one and a little more expensive one. Painted a bike a couple weeks ago and it turned out pretty good. muffinman02-24-2011, 08:49 PMyou dont really need that until the last paint coat and clear coat. sanding the coats will create dust.

You don't dry sand it. You have to wet sand the paint and clear. scottohno02-24-2011, 09:13 PM:ugh: i dry sanded

it turned out fine.

when you sand the paint, if you dry sand it do it outside your homemade booth lucky_charms02-24-2011, 09:15 PMwhich gun did you buy because ive seen one for 10 one for ike 25 and 2 for like 70 lucky_charms02-24-2011, 09:18 PMthis dont sound like a bad deal

Yeah, the best color if you're a Teletubby!!!

That color makes me want to :barf:

If you like it though, good for you. I'm not sure it's good for resale... scottohno03-29-2011, 03:26 PMthese cars arent made for resale.

then again, taking a 25 year old car with a million+1 miles on it and painting it purple just kinda puts icing on the flamboyant cake. rat2mr203-29-2011, 10:54 PMim thinking white, with metallic red wheels. cool? black with gold? red with gold? blue with gold? white with black? ideas? scottohno03-31-2011, 01:39 PMwhite on white FTW

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii293/scottieboy73191/Testing/DSC_0511.jpg viscountalpha04-01-2011, 10:32 PMI'm thinking of doing some sort of iridescent white on this car. Maybe shiny white/two tone mix with black.

also.. this car I purchased has 3 layers. Blue layer on top. Black layer and then red under. The horror...

if you want a cool color try dark blue mica.

I might do a "tron" blue with some glowing EL wire running all around the car :P scottohno04-04-2011, 12:23 PMmy car is dirty. it doesnt get moved, as my block is being worked. after the rebuild, install, break-in period, and wiring fixes i must do, i will wash the car. UrbKlr05-09-2011, 11:30 AMBlack and yellow MK1.5. Not many yellow ones around!

A single color tone never looks quite right. Two tone in the right mixture looks so much better. scottohno05-11-2011, 10:21 AMa single color tone can look alright, but not with something as outrageous as yellow. yellow needs to be broken up or it looks like youre driving a banana. just my opinion, but that yellow 2 looks great. i would hate it if they didnt do the drivers side scoop mod though. then the drivers side would be too yellow.

my car is all one color, and it looks fine. in fact the only part of the car thats not the same as the rest is the CF frunk lid, and i hate it. Tooljst805-27-2011, 08:07 AMOut of curiosity, did the mk1's come from the factory with a clear coat?

Mine has clear on super red II paint but it only seems like it was put on the side panels and the rear bumper... or at least that is where the clear is finally starting to peel off.

Also as a side note, Dupli-color makes factory matched paint in a spray can. Expensive though, $8 for an 8oz can... scottohno05-27-2011, 11:56 AMsome colors did. i dont believe any of the reds did though. UrbKlr06-09-2011, 05:01 PMPicture of the Yellow MK1.5 in action!

Very nice looking show car. Bigbacon06-11-2011, 06:20 PMI'm thinking of doing some sort of iridescent white on this car. Maybe shiny white/two tone mix with black.

also.. this car I purchased has 3 layers. Blue layer on top. Black layer and then red under. The horror...

maybe a good gunmetal grey would be refreshing. Rach06-24-2011, 11:47 PMthose are the three colors that I have been tossing around in my head for quite some time. that blue mica is really purdy. "white is right" but then there is this

im glad someone thinks so. sometimes the peanut gallery has its place.

to stay on topic to avoid getting infracted, how do u like my new pic of the blue mica? maybe if i work on it next week ill pull her out on the wheel dollies for a bath and photo op. :D Rach06-25-2011, 12:40 AMYour car looks really good, if I remember correctly you got it for a pretty damn good deal, correct? I have never been a fan of the duraflex bodykits especially the side skirts but the rear bumper (if fitted with the exhaust correctly and not haggard/micky moused) it looks really aggresive.
My 86 had the duraflex front and rear bumper but now they are in my basement. I went with the 87-89 front lip but I kinda want to put the rear bumper back on  scottohno06-25-2011, 12:52 AMmine isnt fitted properly, and i got it with a rod knock for $1500. ive put about $2500 into machining and parts and im about halfway through the engine  however it will be quicker than stock i hope

i think you should maybe go with a black metallic to be different. Rach06-25-2011, 01:11 AMBlack is always an option. I think I've seen 4 black mr2s on the forums, David from NJ (Konig rewinds), a satin black one (sexy as fugg), and 2 regulars.
If anybody has a black 2 post it up, help me decide :] muffinman06-25-2011, 01:17 AMI loved my black till it got faded to shit.

Florida sun is hard on black plus the fact that it makes the car like an oven in the summer.:( Rach06-25-2011, 01:22 AMDid you DIY muff?
Roasting in an mr2 with no a/c doesn't sound fun muffinman06-25-2011, 01:26 AMNo I had it painted a long time ago. Even with the a/c the car is so hot when you get in that by the time it cools you've arrived where you were going. scottohno06-25-2011, 07:18 AMthats just florida for ya, no? i mean really ive ridden in white cars in florida that could cook the family dog during your half hour trip to the grocery store if poor Fido was left in there. the key is to crack the windows a bit. muffinman06-25-2011, 10:19 AMI think it has a lot to do with that huge windshield also. scottohno06-25-2011, 11:02 AMWhat huge windshield? You can't roll those down on most cars last time I checked muffinman06-25-2011, 11:04 AMWhat huge windshield? You can't roll those down on most cars last time I checked

I'm saying that that is the reason it gets so hot in the car when parked. scottohno06-25-2011, 11:06 AMYeah, but ventilation is key. Remote start and air conditioning help.also. ck110-28-2011, 02:57 AMScott, I do like the color, and the nose. Where did that nose come from? scottohno10-28-2011, 09:34 PMcame on the car when i got it. its one of those ebay cheap body kits. my honest opinion: good from far but far from good (the paint didnt adhere to the bumper properly) Ghost11-05-2011, 07:49 PMAfter disliking red all my life and my first mr2 being black. How about a Gloss vs Flat vs Semi-Gloss thread? muffinman11-11-2011, 10:04 AMHey Muffin

How about a Gloss vs Flat vs Semi-Gloss thread?

That's what mine has become. Gloss on the sides and flat on top where the sun has destroyed the clear. :( geetus11-15-2011, 01:27 PMI am partial to the blue mica, not so much to the blue interior :undecided ,but it is growing on me in a vintage 1980's kind of way. I got to loose the pinstripes though.

And Ghost's red MR2 with the black accents is a good looking combo too. Kind of a comprimise between black and red.

Whats the color code to that????? aaron712-29-2011, 04:25 PMI wanted to keep my MK1.5 red but didn't want just the boring red color.

We mixed a batch of three different reds to get the deep red shade I was looking for. Shot the car with layers of red and gold flake after. Didn't want the carnival-ride look and I think I got a good balance!

Yes, the wheels are terrible. Those are on my SC now. Still not sure what I want but leaning towards some Equip 01's. That side scoop is coming off too.

Hard to get a good shot of the flake... it's subtle till the sun hits it!

I actually really like how the painted the trim to match the color of the car... it changes the original style of the car some but looks pretty good. I've been wondering about that in doing a repaint. I still want to keep the c-pillar trim black but think it would look good to match everything else to the color of the car. (I think there are some good pictures of a gunmetal one with everything painted floating around here some where).

Can you post a pic of the back of the orange car so we can see what the c-pillars look like? kevAW1101-07-2012, 05:29 PMTrying to decide on paint now. Just found out I could be spending $2500+ because my car is red (most expensive) and black (most time consuming).

I'll post all the pics I have. I have to warn you now though, there is damage. The car had it when I bought it. Tempast01-08-2012, 01:08 AMThe paints pretty bad on the bumpers, where the body filler is coming off as the PO didn't do a very good job. My buddies gunna re do the filler on the front bumper and repaint the areas that are bad. I wanna get all the bubbles and bad spots fixed in the future. Wont be for a year or two though. No cash |: crcolton01-09-2012, 12:18 AMAny pictures of a cool blue? I like the darker blue mica but I think this style blue (wrx blue or daytona blue or nissan skyline blue...) might look good on a mr2. Does anyone have the front shot of this car? (Although they should have taken off the stickers before they panted this) Desekrator01-09-2012, 08:19 PMI was thinking about painting my aw11 with John Deere Blitz Black. Anyone went this route before? From what I've gathered, it seems headache free, and cheap. Not to mention, it looks very nice. kevAW1101-09-2012, 08:37 PMBlack takes a lot of prep work to do it right because if there's even a small flaw, you'll find it easily. Desekrator01-09-2012, 08:59 PMI heard this was self leveling paint.
