View Full Version : MR2-FA: Photoshop Contest
koji03-09-2010, 12:13 AMI can still sort of draw, but I can't photoshop for crap.
My next project is going to be pretty ambitious. The nutshell version is this: if the SW20 Toyota MR2 were alive today, what would it look like? Ever drawn a car and wished you could see it made in real life? Here’s your chance.
I’ve done all my analysis and now I’m at the point where I want real renderings to tack on the wall to look at while I’m shaping the body panels for the plugs. What I’d ultimately like to end up with is a series of pictures like this or sort of close to this:
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm54/koji00/UNplug/MR-2/Project2/LFA3.jpg
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm54/koji00/UNplug/MR-2/Project2/LFA6.jpg
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm54/koji00/UNplug/MR-2/Project2/LFA2.jpg
If something is free then it means it has no value, so rather than just posting a thread asking for help I thought “why not make it a contest and put up some money?” This way I figure the end results will be better and we’ll get a broader range of attempts.
Contest Rules:
1. All entries must be posted in this thread no later than 5pm Pacific Monday March 22nd.
2. From whatever entries are posted, I get to pick the four finalists.
3. Other than bragging rights there’s two prizes, one for best overall design (in the case of multiple pictures being created) and one for best single rendering (best single picture). If the winner is the same, you get both prizes.
4. Prize for best design is a $150 gift card to one of the forum supporting vendors. Prize for best single rendering is a $75 gift card to one of the forum supporting vendors. A lot of people have asked me at various times to make them a gauge pods, sub box, whatever but I always say no. I’d consider going back on that in this case. I’ll leave that up to the winner.
5. You get to help pick the winner. Once the deadline is passed I’ll make a poll.
6. By entering your drawing you agree that I get to use the picture including but not limited to posting it on my blog and reproducing it.
7. Your illustration needs to keep the overall dimensions of the SW20 MR2, the wheelbase, the roof (top portion only), front windshield, and door windows. That stuff I can’t change or at least I’d be stupid to try. Everything else is fair game for you to design away.
Helpful Information
1. My blog is here: UNplug (http://unplugnow.blogspot.com) I’ve got a bunch of posts up there about my thoughts on this project. It’d be good to read it but don’t be constrained by it.
2. The wheels I’m going to run on this car are 5Zigen FN01-R’s in Bronze. Front tires are 225/40/17. Rears are 245/40/17.
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm54/koji00/UNplug/MR-2/Project2/IMG_2289.jpg
3. I’m painting the car white like the sample pics of the LFA on the Lexus website.
4. I was able to find an almost exact match to the grill material on the LFA. Any open spaces like radiators or vents I’d likely use this material on.
5. My personal drawings of what I was thinking are below. I haven’t drawn anything in years and I forgot how to shade so interpret it however you see fit. Use these, but again, don’t be constrained by them.

6. Unless someone can convince me otherwise I like (and have) Celica lights. Here's a look I was thinking made sense with these. The blue would be either hood or fender.

PETC03-09-2010, 11:39 AMWell Akash, you see, unlike you and your lambo doors, Koji is a prevalent member of the internet car community with many SKILLS, TALENTS, and EXPERIENCE that make him GOOD at things such as this.
Also, I'm really only good at photoshop image manipulation. Making things from scratch is a lot more difficult... if I get bored I may see what I can whip up. Sh0ty03-09-2010, 12:03 PMHero ^
Good luck with the project Koji, if I knew how to PS, I'd help. I see you drew a center exit exhaust, how do you plan on routing the tubing? If you want it to go over the crossmember, you wouldn't really be able to fit much in the way of mufflers back there. What are you thinking of as far as materials are concerned?
I'm excited by this! kbrew899103-09-2010, 12:17 PMyou could do a center exit exhaust with mufflers in a similar style to the way Corvettes do it
http://www.car-stuff.com/images/part_image/borlacorvetteexhaust.jpg BlueBlur03-09-2010, 12:26 PMIf I was any kind of artist, I'd try my hand at it. Ideas are easy. Expressing them so others can comprehend them...not so much. (read: my crayon skills are pathetic) Your goals are admirable, koji. I've wondered as well what kind of stylistic progression the SW20 would've had if they'd not made the MK3 screw-up. Good luck with this. It will be jealousy inspiring. Sh0ty03-09-2010, 12:41 PMKbrew, I thought that kind of routing might not be ideal, but I guess if it's good for a million liters in a V8, it should be fine for anything we're running. kbrew899103-09-2010, 12:42 PMKbrew, I thought that kind of routing might not be ideal, but I guess if it's good for a million liters in a V8, it should be fine for anything we're running.

This. Good call dude.
I've measured the room under the trunk of the SW20 and if you can live with a certain number of bends you can pull it off. I have other ideas but we'll see what I end up welding together.
In terms of materials, I've got three complete exhaust systems in the basement from the WRX, ES300, and the MR2. Between the three of them about the only thing I'll probably need to buy are a couple of nice U bends and maybe a cat. Sh0ty03-09-2010, 12:50 PMI meant more body paneling materials. I wouldn't know where to start attacking this. rhino03-09-2010, 01:01 PMbeautiful work koji.. toy4tao03-09-2010, 01:15 PMim working on mine right now, i feel like giving up already :( its difficult! koji03-09-2010, 01:29 PMI meant more body paneling materials. I wouldn't know where to start attacking this.
Ah, sorry dude. I'm going to use a combination of fiberglass and sheet metal. My personal rule of thumb is metal to metal, and make independent panels like the side skirts and front bumper out of glass. Bonding fiberglass to metal is possible but isn't the best way to go because it will invairably crack and look like hell and I'm going for high quality.
A lot of people think fiberglass sucks and breaks easily because their reference point is the cheap s***t on eBay. Done right, with the right fabrics and resin, you can make a good body panel out of glass. The reason you don't see more of those is the material cost to make a good piece is at least five times higher than cheap knock off's. At that price point CF is just as easy, lighter, and stronger than glass but you need an autoclave and a big vacuume bagging setup to do it right. Big shops go the CF route because they can. Guys like us have to go with glass but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Here's a post I wrote up on materials:
UNplug: Tips and Tricks (http://unplugnow.blogspot.com/search/label/Tips%20and%20Tricks) Sh0ty03-09-2010, 02:39 PMI see. Well good luck and make sure to keep us posted on progress. Do you by any chance know what the stock front and rear bumpers are made of? Butters03-09-2010, 02:48 PMi think they are a urethane type material BlueBlur03-09-2010, 02:55 PMI wonder if this setup will work....:D Plenty of flow potential.

I'd like to see the routing on this as well as dimensions.
http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af360/blueblur2/GTRcenterexit.jpg
Would something like this with Flowmasters or Magnaflows work?
http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af360/blueblur2/MR2centerexit-1.png PETC03-09-2010, 02:58 PMNot sure having them re-connect right before exhausting would be a good idea... just through the nature of the way the world works one tube would not have as high an exhaust velocity as the other and you'd get some nasty backflow issues. Sh0ty03-09-2010, 02:59 PMWell, that car is front engined, so the exhaust really isn't anything like ours. Do you see the exhaust pipe on the left side of the underbody? BlueBlur03-09-2010, 03:03 PMI see it. I was just wondering what the muffler set-up looked like. I edited the above. Better for sound and flow, probably? BlueBlur03-09-2010, 03:19 PMOr even crossflows with one set of exits capped off or removed. Wonder if it would sound good. It would remove a lot of extra piping.
http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af360/blueblur2/MR2centerexit2.png
I may pick up a couple of these to try it out for sound. It'll likely be fairly quiet at idle but flow really well with plenty of noise at WOT. I'll take pics of it while I throw it together. Probably be fun.:D
Inlet: Diameter/Location
Flowmaster 80 series Box Size (LxWxH)
26 in. x 10 in. x 5 in.
Might be too tight based on an eyeball measurement of my car just now, so I'll look around at other offerings to see if anyone makes a shorter crossflow muffler.
OK: so I ordered some knockoff Flowmaster crossflow mufflers that should get here by the end of the week. I'll get some elbows & throw together a y-pipe and tack it to my old stock b-pipe to check for sound. If it's a go, I'll put up pics and maybe a youtube clip koji. That way you can either consider or eliminate it as a possibility. I realize it's not the main focus, but it's pretty much all I can do to try and help. Butters03-09-2010, 04:06 PMI know koji appreciates the exhaust feedback guys but let's get this topic back on track (yes I'm just as guilty as everyone else).
Koji I'm a disaster at Photoshop but my fiancé is currently majorin in graphic design and messes with Photoshop quite
frequently I'll see if I can get her to work on something for you. toy4tao03-09-2010, 04:34 PM. DavidV03-09-2010, 05:45 PMWell, that car is front engined, so the exhaust really isn't anything like ours. Do you see the exhaust pipe on the left side of the underbody?
But the Smart isn't...
-- DavidV :D BlueBlur03-09-2010, 06:37 PMSomebody try and take the door and intake design from the Audi R8 and incorporate it into the MR2 design. Slightly larger side vents maybe and keep the mirrors. Their positioning can be adjusted later. He wants to start with the doors, so then designing forwards to the fenders with a similar bodyline as the R8 but with a unique twist on the hood will likely look good. What's everyone think about his desire to use Celica headlights? Fixed? Or pop-up?

turbonique? im guessing you mean a turbo? if so you should be aware of the fact that these cars came with a factory turbo charged motor (and commonly swapped) 3sgte.
You should read kojis blog- i havent read it in a while but if i recall he addresses his motor selection or his possible choices.
anyways the audi r8 vent idea is pretty cool, im not sure how much you want to rework the factory door koji... are you wanting to get rid of the i guess youd call it the bend in the door leading to the intake vent? if you DO want to get rid of it then maybe the r8 style would work well. BUT im also a personal fan of the FA rear quarter window vent (there is a member around here with i believe a red mk2 that has a similar quarter vent). Sh0ty03-09-2010, 09:52 PMBut the Smart isn't...
-- DavidV :D
Yeah, I was referring to the GTR, but I see what you mean regarding the exhaust design.
I've seen that MR2 with the rear quarter intakes and I thought it looked phenomenal. The Ferrari F40 and 458 use the same design and tout it as a sort of ram air intake in that the curvature of the car's body accelerates the incoming air.
Akash, your drawing labeled "R8" is quite clearly a Veyron... And would it kill you to make an attempt at sentence structure? I feel like the voice reading your posts in my head is having some sort of seizure. David03-09-2010, 10:02 PMOn that^ note, it's Pagani. Also, I believe the bottom right is an F430, not a Modena.
Just sayin koji03-09-2010, 10:05 PMim not sure how much you want to rework the factory door koji... are you wanting to get rid of the i guess youd call it the bend in the door leading to the intake vent?
As much as i need to. I could make the r8 idea work. And yes - the lower rounded portion of the door has to go. koji03-09-2010, 10:06 PMI've seen that MR2 with the rear quarter intakes and I thought it looked phenomenal.

I'll search around, I remember seeing a post about it around here though, so you might be able to dig it up faster, my MR2 forums search-foo is weak. The headlights look out of place, and I'd go with plainer hood (that's just my taste). I'd like to see an air intake similar to the LFA or Porsche's hot 911s. canadam03-09-2010, 10:32 PMThose guys have done some good work, Koji. I love the rear window vents I posted up but I'm feeling something a bit more flashy like the lfa but maybe that's just me haha
No it's not just you. I like the LFA vents too but I don't know how I could possibly make them functional. I've thought it through and there's a few problems:
1. I want a trunk so I can't direct the vents there.
2. It'd be a bad idea to relocate the radiator if for no other reason than you need the ballast.
3. Since there's no point to directing the vents to the trunk I would either need to go to the rear brakes (dumb idea); go into the engine bay with a close to 45 degree angle then followed by a 90'ish degree bend (not a great idea but not quite full retard); or direct them towards the rear lip spoiler of the car (almost as pointless as going to the brakes).
My first drawings had LFA vents, but after some measurements I determined they just weren't feasible to make functional. If someone smarter than me can figure a way I'm all ears. Oh, and you also have to get them around the rear window, which I don't want to change. koji03-10-2010, 11:15 AMSlight change to the contest parameters. The moderators at one of the forums I posted this on don't want the prize to be cash because that's too much like vending. Honestly they've got a point. In order to keep this going I've got to change the prize to a gift certificate/card to one of the forums supporting vendors. Since I need to do that for one big forum, I'm doing it for all of them. The initial post has been updated to reflect this change.
The "I make you a part" option still stands. I could make a pretty huge part or series of parts with $150 in raw materials. That'd pretty much cover my sub box, steering wheel, shift boot, and eBrake boot from my current active thread on here. koji03-10-2010, 12:32 PMMore helpful information:
1. The radiator on an N/A MR2 measures 650x340mm So, the intake would need to be about 390X204mm and the exit about 325X170. These are total area, so you could have one exit vent that covered that surface area or two. On the front it'd be best to keep it a bit larger because I'll need room for things like hella supertones.
2. When I was pulling apart the Lexus V6 donor car, I kept the moon roof. I thought it might make a good back window for the MR2 because it was about the right size and had about the right curvature. Last night I took it into the garage and wouldn't you know it - I was right. It's damn near perfect.

BlueBlur03-10-2010, 05:10 PMYou sure you wanna use tinted glass over the motor? I'd think clear for showing it off. I guess you could always install some LED's on a switch. That might look good having it be "now you see it....." etc. Tucked up out of sight along the glass or focused light on the intake manifold. What do you think, Koji? koji03-10-2010, 05:36 PMHave you seen 1MZ'd engine bays? It's just going to get uglier when I add a turbo or supercharger. Engine bays to me are functional first. If you can make them pretty - great - but that's not a high priority.
I'm not saying I couldn't make it look nice under there, I'm just saying that the amount of crap you need to cram into the engine bay to keep your trunk functional isn't going to exactly make it worth showing off. David03-10-2010, 05:42 PMWell if you make it a fast back, you might be able to fit more things under there.

NIIIIIIIICE!!! That is all business while looking good to those who know what they're looking at. koji is likely looking for something a little more asthetically pleasing than that, but it's true....fastback = more room for goodies. I'd been thinking a top-mount intake at the rear of the roofline with indented bodylines leading up to it.
Take this hood off of a '98-'02 SS Camaro at a yard and use it to help make a mold for the roof intake.

Personally I think the first one is sex on wheels. The shoulder vents are a really interesting idea. BlueBlur03-11-2010, 02:04 PMI like the doors and front bumper on the blue one. The sides of the top one do look really good, too. The top one reminds me of Gallardo cues. I like. If you follow that one, I may buy another 2 and hit you up for body panels to do it as well. Might help defray some of your costs? koji03-11-2010, 02:18 PMIt's exceedingly unlikely I'd ever make any of this stuff for anyone but myself unless the costs just get completely out of control. That said I'm trying to build the entire car on a set budget which I'll reveal when everything is done. If it takes more than the budget to do things right I'll have to offset the costs somehow so I'd at least consider it.
Not trying to rain on the parade or anything I'm just trying to set realistic expectations. If I pull this off I'm sure I'll get a ton of "When is the group buy!?!?!" or "Dude make me one!!!" type comments and that's just not going to happen. I don't need the money or the pain in the ass and I'd rather not be in my garage making things for other people when I could be playing with my kids. I haven't done any drawings other than the ones I did by hand on Page 1. Everything else is from board members here, on Nasioc, or the other MR2 forums. koji03-17-2010, 11:18 PMAnother one from the Subaru boards. Man the MR2 crew is getting destroyed.

Before I actually build out the real car I'm going to do a mini-project and build out a scale model.
First I'll take a mold of this so I can make multiple copies and cut them up if I need to. Then I'll sculpt on top of those casts with Plasticine clay till the shape is right. Then I'll take a mold of that and cast the final version, paint it, and mark lines on it so I have reference points to do measurements from. I have all the technical measuring tools for the model and I'm currently building out full size angle and line measuring tools. When I'm not working on the interior of the car. Or tearing apart the engine donor car.
Anybody who doesn't think I'm serious about doing this and doing it right... David03-18-2010, 07:18 PMWhere did you get that?? I want! Cjung03-18-2010, 07:51 PMWhere did you get that?? I want!
he wrote where he got it here:
http://mr2.zhutiblog.com/com/forums/mk-2-mr2-sw20/Toyota-MR2-50556-looking-sw20-scale-model.html Archidamus-R03-20-2010, 04:50 PMIt's exceedingly unlikely I'd ever make any of this stuff for anyone but myself unless the costs just get completely out of control.

Just a little irked that you keep prodding at us like this. So NASIOC has managed to throw together five(?) entries, they have over five times as many people on their boards. It's hard to find people with the kind of skills you're looking for. Except, apparently Mister 2.2 could have blown all of them out of the water... but he doesn't do contests. koji03-23-2010, 12:54 PMIt wasn't prodding so much as sharing and hoping that at least one entry would come from here. Don't see the harm in that really. osephjay03-23-2010, 01:01 PMMan i wish i had the time/money to do something like this koji03-23-2010, 01:33 PMJust a little irked that you keep prodding at us like this.
Nevermind - I just reread my comments in the thread and I get why you could be pissed off at me. All I can say is sorry. I was just trying to create some friendly competition - not to be an outright **** or "this forum is way better than you guys" type thing. I don't actually feel that way at all. PETC03-24-2010, 01:38 AMNo problem, I wouldn't say I was pissed, just a little irritated. :) mr2magic03-24-2010, 06:47 AMI would love to have a go at styling a car but I would need way more time - Why don't you keep the whole idea going? Deal. Here's the thing though - don't take a ton of time on it because I'm starting sculpting the clay model Friday. Since it's clay I can quickly cut it off or add it on but I'd seriously just sketch (by hand) some shapes of parts you think might help. What I'd be interested in is what elements or lines (except the pop-ups) would need to be carried forward in an updated SW20. I'm convinced about the fastback lid and killing the pop ups - so if you take those away - what else needs to come over?
I don't disagree about the 350z thing - it's the headlights. No matter what you do if you use that headlight shape it's going to look something like a 350z just because of dimensions. I really, really didn't want to - because I've done it before and I know how hard it is to get it right - but it looks like I'm going to have to make my own headlights or I'm constraining the shape too much. koji03-24-2010, 10:38 AMBig shout out for all the work going on here :)
Koji when I saw that you'll put celica lights on, I remembered that I once saw an sw with celica lights :)
Yep - that's where I got the idea. ;) Thanks for taking the time out to post those up though.
Like I said though - I think I have to make my own. It's going to suck, but it's a necessary evil at this point. koji03-24-2010, 10:42 AMIf I could be bothered I would design a car in Maya or 3dsmax based on sketches but I have no time at the moment I'm quite good with 3d modelling software nurb and polygon based. I always meant to make an mr2 for games but never did, made a TRD supra but not an mr2 tis a shame:undecided
For either of those could you use the model in one of the wind tunnel simulators? Getting access to an actual wind tunnel is still iffy for me at this point, but I'll have an exact scale model that could concievably be measured up for use in tunnel software provided someone had the skills (I don't) to build out the model. mr2magic03-24-2010, 01:57 PMWell if it's a fastback you want I'm out. All the models look like the motor is in the front and the rear wheels are driven - that's not an MR in my opinion (yes I know it's not about me but still...)
I will try to sketch something I would appreciate but I reckon it's not something you'll like :-) koji03-24-2010, 03:37 PMFastback isn't everyones cup of tea I'll admit - but I need the space.
I wouldn't worry about the front end - it's not going to end up looking like any of the drawings. 328FTW03-24-2010, 04:00 PMFor either of those could you use the model in one of the wind tunnel simulators? Getting access to an actual wind tunnel is still iffy for me at this point, but I'll have an exact scale model that could concievably be measured up for use in tunnel software provided someone had the skills (I don't) to build out the model.
I could there is a 3dsmax to solidworks filter kicking about somewhere 3dsmax is better for the car design but solidworks has a fluid simulator. I could do a model based on the sketches alone but I have no time lately have about 38234 projects of my own, you might be able to find someone that can scan to 3d to get a 3d model.
You don't need a proper wind tunnel to test either you can use water at a greatly reduced speed (fluid behaviour means slow water basically is the same as fast air at the speeds we are talking) which only requires a tank and pump and is also more common as they are quieter and more compact. Ask around the local universities usually have something like that for engineering students, ours does and the others around do as well. There is some math to get the water speed you need for equivalent air speed but it is not that hard. koji03-24-2010, 04:07 PMUniversity of Washington (my alma mater) has a large scale wind tunnel. But the problem is that other than for students it's actually run as a business all it's own because of all the aerodynamic stuff that happens in the Seattle area. Since it's a business, the rules are different. If it was just a university thing it wouldn't be a problem for me but I need to try and sweet talk some people.
I'll investigate the water version. I've read about it but not gone into that much detail yet because I was holding out for the real deal. 328FTW03-24-2010, 04:33 PMI might be able to dig up my notes on it we did some testing with a water tanks and some conversions last year. I have to do that inbetween replacing my gearbox, replacing another engine, finding another v6, fixing a civic and destroying the universe though so don't hold out hope for an awesome detailed explanation.
Here is the quick of it though
http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/2/8/5/28560fb9ccae7b5f811de11f965d5478.png
If you re arrange to get the drag coeffecient Cd you don't need to use air as you account for that by inputting fluid density which is if you use water the density of water obviously. Drag force (Fd) is whatever number you get testing. The rest is speeds/density and other parameters.
The rest is abstract like looking for low pressure areas using a dye trail or smoke trail. Not a full explanation but if I played that right you can kinda see what I mean by you can use water there are renoylds numbers and other crazy fluid stuff that goes with all this but I'll try keep my post at least a little understandable. mr2magic03-24-2010, 04:43 PMwat? 328FTW03-24-2010, 05:04 PM^yeeeeeeah I tried to make it understandable but it is tricky. I can dumb it down the wind goes Whoooooooooosh and then it hits the car and goes swiiiiiirl, wisp then you get some numbers and you either go :), :undecided or :( koji03-24-2010, 05:14 PMI followed all that . Ok, I'll do some playing tonight. Archidamus-R04-21-2010, 07:14 PMBig shout out for all the work going on here :)
