View Full Version : Floor Jack Recommendations

tadamany02-24-2010, 02:42 PMI need a floor jack. What do you all recommend and not recommend? I'd like something that will last even if it's a little more expensive. But i don't don't some piece that will break easily.

Thanks a lot. 328FTW02-24-2010, 02:56 PMNot sure on brands over there but it really needs to be a low floor jack to get under a 2 I have a low floorjack and it still cannot get under my lowered 2 front end. A lot of the time you can see how good a jack is by looking at it the cheap chinese ones have flat cheap chalkboard looking paint and slag round welds as well as just looking cheap a quality jack will have a nice finish the bolts will look quality the welds will look perfect no slop in pins not a rule but it is what I note and I've had chinese cheap jacks fail with me under the car always use jackstands ;) kbrew899102-24-2010, 03:01 PMracers are hard on jacks, so I searched around and found this topic

We have dead Craftsman, Torin (aka Big Red, PepBoys, etc) and HF aluminum racing jacks at our shop. I'd stay away from these as they are complete junk in my opinion.

So far I have been happy with the OTC 1532 aluminum racing jack. It comes with a lifetime warranty and can be found online for under $250 shipped.

You get what you pay for with jacks. If you don't mind replacing yours often go with a cheapo. tadamany02-24-2010, 04:00 PMI think i narrowed it down to 3 choices. Can someone give me a reason not to buy any one of these?

Thanks for your input. TomsMR202-24-2010, 04:04 PMive had my raging pos 19 dollar jack for about 8 years now. still works fine. it sucks and i hate it, but it works. i had to sell my nicer low profile jack when i moved.

a good low profile steel jack is nice. aluminum jacks dont make sense unless you're carrying them around frequently. 328FTW02-24-2010, 11:46 PMThat first one with the jackstands with it looks not bad it also has a quick valve so you pump it and it goes up fast till it hits load then goes slow they are both a godsend and annoying sometimes when working with not much space the slightest pump can make it jam up in the car with a quickvalve, but other times it saves you 20 precious seconds so it levels out:lol:

Also it is almost a must to have a jack with a universal on the twist handle not 2 gears that mesh the gearmesh ones tend to jam unless designed right the ones with a universal always work at any angle which is great because if you have ever had a gear one jam, skip then jump releasing the load too fast then you will know how awesome it is to have good lowering speed control at all handle angles.

I'm not a fan of cheap jacks I had one unload on me and I was using an alloy wheel as a jackstand it came down hit that and made me almost have a heart attack. Also had a cheap one break one sidepin and dump the car sideways trying to pin me against a wall..........thinking about it my luck sucks horrendously that might have more to do with it. tadamany02-25-2010, 11:42 AMThanks for the input, i appreciate it. I ended up going with an OTC 3-ton low profile aluminum. I was going to get a 2-ton steel to save money, but then I realized I may need to use the jack on my SUV, which is over 2-tons. Also, I went with the aluminum jack, not that I'm going to travel with it, but a steel 120 pound floor jack could be difficult to move without killing me. The aluminum jack was only 50 lbs.

I hope I made a wise choice by getting the higher quality one. By what you are all saying it's not smart to skimp on jacks. Now I just need some jack stands.

Thanks again! kbrew899102-25-2010, 12:28 PMlet me know how it turns out... :) Sang02-25-2010, 12:50 PMI've had my torin (or is it big red?) pepboys special for over 5 years now. It works...and that's pretty much all I care about. I would like another with a higher lift though, but that's another matter altogether :) Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
