View Full Version : Composite Materials fiberglassing to sheet metal

jasenklems01-27-2010, 10:33 PManything special that I will need to do to get fiberglass to stick to the sheet metal of my hood so that it bonds (does not pull free) this hood it going to be a mold so it will need to stand up for some abuse. turboguy01-27-2010, 10:41 PMMake sure you clean the hood very good. Wipe it down with acetone to get the wax on the surface to come off and then also after you sand it. Sand the hood with 400 to give the resin something to "bite" and make sure the hood doesn't flex.

Fiberglass isn't meant to bond to non-porus materials like sheet metal and plastic, so good luck. jasenklems01-27-2010, 10:48 PMshould I take some wood or something and screw it to the hood where I want to fiberglass so it will stick where I want it to..... turboguy01-27-2010, 11:25 PMBalsa wood bonds great to fg.

What are you trying to do exactly? jasenklems01-27-2010, 11:28 PMhttp://i561.photobucket.com/albums/ss56/jasenklems/0127123039.jpg
I want to make a raised lip at the front of this opening and down the sides tapering to nothing ( well not really nothing but to blend in with the rest of the hood. turboguy01-27-2010, 11:35 PMtake a 2 inch wide strip of balsa wood the length of the hole (front to back), put 1 layer of fg on either side, glue it to the hood from the bottom (1 on either side of the hole, on the edge), then start glassing. That will make a small sandwich section of the hood on either side and will help it stay in place. jasenklems01-27-2010, 11:42 PMthanks for the help I am not very good with fg but I have done some patch work on a boat floor but nothing like this., this is a whole new deal for me I didnt think that I could do some of the cutting that I did and make it look nice but it can all be fixed to look perfect in the end I am not trying to cut corners on my prep cause the devil is in the details so to speak.....
thanks again PHOENIX01-27-2010, 11:53 PMYou should be able to strip it and have a sealant coat painted on it that you can rough up and the fiberglass should stick fine to it. jasenklems01-28-2010, 12:14 AMthis is all going to be very helpful. jasenklems01-28-2010, 12:20 AMI am open to other peoples ideas and what did or didnt work for you.... turboguy01-28-2010, 01:28 AMDave has a good point. A little high build etching primer would help adhesion. TomsMR201-28-2010, 05:20 AMwouldnt that just stick to the paint? your adhesion layer would be as strong as the bond between the primer and body, and high build primer doesnt stick all that fantastically, definitely not structurally. the force of wind on the part would peel it straight off. turboguy01-28-2010, 11:25 AMBut he just needs it to be durable enough to make a mold from. (at least that's what I thought) jasenklems01-28-2010, 02:14 PMyea that is all that I need it for.... jasenklems01-28-2010, 07:24 PMI have been thinking about just making what I want in wood and then putting some fg on it I might have some better luck doing it that way but I dont know just yet. CJMR2T01-28-2010, 10:52 PMMy suggestion is to build it up with wood (or foam) and bondo then make your mold off of it. This will allow you to blend it in to the original panel(s) better then Glass. Keep in mind, the better and smoother you plug is, the better your mold will be.

The other thing is if you rough the surface up with 40 or 60 grit, the Glass / Resin will adhere to it just fine. jasenklems01-28-2010, 11:49 PMthanks cjmr2t Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
