MR.twooooo03-18-2006, 12:39 AMHi there, i have a '87 mr2 that my grandfather gave me for my first car. I have put mobil1 synthetic oil on the engine and redline in the tranny.
A K@N and some stereo stuff. I would like to get some ideas to gain a few horsepower that are cheap mods. I'v heard of the powermax setup and I'v heard from one guy not to do it but I see it in a few sites and I'm thinking about it. Tell me what is the best thing to do. Also I'v looked at nology sparkplug wires and would like to know if it is worth the price.

send me some ideas

thanks MR-Fixer03-18-2006, 01:36 AMThe powermax modification works. It makes a noticeable difference in power.

And its inexpensive too.

The drawbacks of it is primarily this: the atmosphere in the engine bay is full of dirt and dust. Performance airfilters like K&N actually don't filter air all that well. Hold one up to a light and you can see right through it.

The strong point of your 87 NA is not its power, but rather its handling. So many newer cars come off the assembly line faster than an 87 NA, with cams, aluminum flywheel, header, K&N filter, ignition upgrade ad nauseum, its just not funny! Another factor is weight. The 87 NA with T-tops PW, PDL, AC, etc weighs in close to 2500 lbs. Putting your two on a 200 lb wieght loss diet would help a lot.

Handling improvements: new struts (I bet yours are shot, no offense), ST brand Sway Bar set, move the Battery to the front trunk, get some lighter rims, lose the heavy OEM exhaust system, replace with header. Your car would handle way better than a stock MK I with the previously mentioned Mods. Way . .. better.

With today's faster new cars, the competition dictates that you'll eventually have to upgrade to a supercharged, or turbocharged engine to keep up with the Jones'. MR-Fixer03-18-2006, 01:41 AMOh, there's a lot of controversy over whether Nology Spark Plug wires work or not. Maybe some board members could post their actual experiences with them. The nay sayers of Nology have made some convincing arguments. Senko03-18-2006, 07:57 AMI love my 87 na base model, no power anything 2100 curb weight baby! oh and its got the moon roof canadam03-18-2006, 01:53 PM:lol: I know that car isn't even close to 2100lbs curbed. :)

I love my 87 na base model, no power anything 2100 curb weight baby! oh and its got the moon roof Senko03-18-2006, 09:22 PMthen how much is it? I just know its light as **** AceX03-19-2006, 12:59 AMIt's probably in the range of 2400-2500lbs. My car will probably wiegh close to 2600lbs when I'm done with the stereo and body work (stereo goes in tuesday).

You're a young guy, much like I was when I first started working on my MR2, you want to have fun, race, and impress. Trust me, you can do all of those things with a very clean, stock car.

If it's pure power you seek, look into a 3sgte swap or a 4agte. The N/A 4age won't produce the kind of power you seek for the money you invest.

What I would do right now, if I was you (or if I could do my car over again), is get it REALLY clean, tear down the suspension, put new brakes, struts and springs on it. Then go and rework the interior to your liking (probably a cool stereo). After that, focus on the engine or the exterior (new paint job, engine swap, or turbo). By the time you get to the bigger performance mods, you'll have gotten used to driving a mid engine sports car, which, trust me, you'll need to be. I put my car ina ditch less than 12 hours after getting it re-registered with the california DMV because I didn't know what I was up against with the car. My dad and I have spent the last 1.5 years working to get the car to where it is, and we took 4 steps backwards when I did that a few weeks ago. Senko03-19-2006, 01:06 AMwell currently I am having some serious issues with my mr2, anybody in ga wanna gimme a hand? LOL im having trouble getting it to start. not sure whats going on, possibly jumped timing..... sigh. and I have no reference book on the car. Senko03-19-2006, 01:07 AMif I can afford it, I will probly drop it off at a shop and just pay someone to put it back together. I dont have the time to invest in a prodject right now.... MR-Fixer03-19-2006, 02:23 AMSenko:

The are two sources to help you with your car problems, when they are as non-specific as "won't start". A Haynes MR2 manual. Or the Big Green Book (referred to as the BGB), its the Factory Manual. About 1000 pages long. I got one on a CD, on Ebay for like ten bucks.

Mark Ones are getting old, really old. Yota Dealers often charge more that the part's weight in gold at the parts counter. Many Mk I's have 4 "computers" onboard. Time, moisture, and temperature changes take their toll on the car's old electronic systems.

If you keep your car very long its garanteed, that you will do 90+ % of the work yourself, or sell it after the first grand or two in shop bills.. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
