Aquarius02-25-2006, 04:27 AMI've done everything I can think of. Changed spark plugs, cap, rotor, wires, fuel filter, O2 sensor, new clutch, had EGR valve tested. timing has been adjusted and no codes are flashing in dash. I'm getting less than 200 mi. per tank.(Right now I have 115 on 3/4 of a tank) Sometimes when on the freeway it feels like the engine is cutting on and off like it's an electrical problem, or a bad cat or muffler. Both were changed, muffler was broken so I thought that was the problem, but it wasn't. Can't find any air leaks so I'm totally stump. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, car is an 87 and has 175,000 on it. iggy-dude1802-25-2006, 10:17 AMI know this sounds like a dumb question....but is your gauge right? Maybe it is just your gauge thats messed up. Try changing your air filter too. Aquarius02-25-2006, 07:22 PMI don't think it was a dumb ? I thought of that myself at one time, but I think they only have a 10 ga. tank and I usually compare it to how many ga. of gas it takes when I fill it up. If that is wrong somebody please correct me. Hey, I didn't think about the air filter:shocked: Since its in the trunk. You know out of sight out of mind. I'm going to go get one right now I'll let you know what the result is in about 4 days. Thanks for the advice. Ncturnal02-25-2006, 08:33 PMIt sounds like it could have multiple causes. I'll list some things I think it could possibly be. Just some random ideas I have in no particular order.

What are your spark plugs gapped at? Improper gapping could cause some funky behavior.

Check both ends of the main ground coming off the battery. It would be good to check all grounds, but especially the one off the battery. If it's loose, it could cause some problems. Also check the wire itself for deterioration or corrosion.

How old is the battery?

What size are you wheels compared to stock? Larger wheels can cause a percieved lower MPG because the odometer doesn't clock as many miles as you've actually traveled.

Air pressure in the tires.

Air filter.

For checking gas mileage, I try to get gas at the same place. I fill up until the pump clicks the first time. Reset the odometer and then the next time I fill up, I divide the total miles traveled on the trip meter by the actual gallons shown on the pump. Aquarius02-25-2006, 09:39 PMNcturnal thanks for the reply. Gaps or correct, Battery is new, ground is good because I changed when installing amps. Rims are 17", Tires 205/40/17 they seem a little heavy to me but would it make such a "BIG" difference in the gas mileage. My gas mileage is any where between 135 to 200 mi. per tank. I changed the air filter earlier today and have gained some power back.(Old one didn't look that bad but I hadn't change since I bought car in Sep.) Just waiting to see what kinda gas mi. I get now. tgidavid02-28-2006, 03:19 PMI've done everything I can think of. I had this issue for a while. I found that both my tps was sticking very slightly and the coolant temp sensor was not reading right. I would check both. Also, have you tried the seafoam treatment yet? I had poor mileage on my starlet and did the seafoam thing. I got back my mileage almost immediately. 5FistsoftheNorthStar02-28-2006, 03:32 PMWhats seafoam treatment? Sounds interesting. Will it work with all autos? TheAmazingDave03-03-2006, 11:16 AMI just put a new TPS on my GZE. It was just under $100 from my local dealership. The car now runs fantastic and the gauge has hardly moved since my last fill up. michaelmr203-03-2006, 12:27 PMinstead of measuring by the tank, try MPG.

Fill your tank, drive 100 miles, and refil. divide the amount it takes to fill your tank into the number of miles you drove. Aquarius03-03-2006, 02:13 PMWhat's the difference between driving 100 mi. and driving till empty. If I only got 150 per tank you still would divide it the same way. Comes out to 15 mi. a ga. Besides my problem is one week it gets maybe 200 the next week I might get as low as 135. Since changing the the air filter it does seem to be getting better gas mi. But I won't be sure untill next fillup because I had already drivien a 1/4 tank before changing filter. So far I have 171 mi. with a little under a 1/4 left. could you please tell me what these are and how to replace them. im having the same problem. today i drove to my friends and back which was about 5 miles total and i saw a difference of about 1 bar on the gas thing. i was amazed. im screwed if im sucking up this much gas. i want to do seafoam but i would have to find a remote area to do it, my neighbors would NOT like seeing the polution i would cause Aquarius03-05-2006, 04:29 AMTPS - Throttle Positioner Sensor. The 4A-GZE is a supercharged version of the 4A-GE engine. CyFi03-05-2006, 04:38 AMso on a 5sfe..... Gairloch03-07-2006, 08:31 PMso on a 5sfe.....

The TPS is on the throttle body. It's held on by 1 electrical connection and 2 screws. It's adjust by loosening the two screws and slapping a multimeter on specific contact points as you rotate the TPS. You can find specific troubleshooting and adjustment directions in the EFI section of the BGB. MR.twooooo03-21-2006, 12:06 AMif u have a mk1 the fuel guage shows empty when u have 2 gallons left.
I mean that the 10 gallon tank shows empty when u have used 8 gallons MR-Fixer03-21-2006, 09:43 AMSeafoam is a solvent you put in your gasoline. Berryman's B12 Carb. cleaner is a similar product and is made of 100% toluene (a paint thinner). Berryman's will take the paint right off your car.

So Seafoam cleans up varnish, and gas additive deposits in your injectors and fuel system. It can clean up the combustion chamber somewhat. If you have a really old gunked up motor Seafoam can cause fuel leaks, and increase oil burning. Because, crud buildup was keeping the old motor from leaking and burning oil. "if u have a mk1 the fuel guage shows empty when u have 2 gallons left.
I mean that the 10 gallon tank shows empty when u have used 8 gallons"

The answer to both of these is that a ten gallon tank does not contain 10 gallon of gas when full.
It contains between 11 and 13 depending on anything from model to plant to exact machine which molded the tank.

"Empty" does not mean Full - 10 gallons. The best thing to do is to fill up, drive 100mi, and then fill up again at the same station. The amount that the tank fills is approximately the amount of gas you used to go 100mi.
Divide 100 by that number and thats your MPG.

This is pretty much exactly what Michael said (I dont wanna steal credit =P ). vaneck3403-21-2006, 10:40 AMTwo other things can cause that. Old BOV if its a turbo and also the knock sensor can cause bad gas mil.
