View Full Version : Need a few tune-up suggestions '88sc

IeatPorche02-21-2006, 04:13 AMI'm getting ready to do a general tune up and am looking for opinions on a few parts....

sprk plugs .......best brand and type for performance
plug wires........" "
distrib cap.......should I stick with stock???
oil filter...........any brand suggestions

I also want to replace all my brake pads........any suggestions for good stopping power and durrabilty.

My car is used as a "sport driver", but I may take it to the track this year for some novice autoX..........hope this is enough info for some educated feed back.

:) TheAmazingDave02-21-2006, 10:16 AMThe stock ignition system is very capable, OEM replacements will do just fine. But if you want something else I know there is a few brands that sell plug sets for our cars. I have my original 1986 plug wires still and they are in great condition and all ohm out in spec. Generic copper plugs are just as good for performance as platinum or iridium, the key benefits of the expensive plugs is there longevity. But another downside is that some have had them break under extreme conditions in their boosted engines. Copper will be great, they just need to be changed every other oil change, some even do every change since they're like a buck a piece.

I'm a big fan of Fram filters with the grip on the end, but Wix makes a good filter too.

It would also be a good idea to change the SC fluid or at least top it off. I use Ford SC oil as you can buy a bottle for $18 that will just about fill it up from empty, where as the Toyota bottle is $50 and won't even get you half way full from empty. Ford and Chevy SC oils are both synthetic like the Toyota oil and should do just fine.

A coolant flush is also not a bad idea depending on age.

I have OEM rotors on all four corners but I use a semi-metallic brake pad IIRC. It's been a while since I bought them. I don't do any racing yet but I've been known to drive hard and I've never had a problem with brake fade or warpage. CpuZapper02-21-2006, 05:42 PMIeatPorche,
86mister2 did a pretty good job of giving the same answer I would've. The stock ignition system in our cars is damn good for the most part. I've always used OEM (and not OEM equivalent from Napa, Kragen, etc.) ignition parts minus the plugs. The stock motor came with platinum plugs which is great for never having to change them, but crap for high performance.

As to your questions:
OEM Cap Rotor and Wires - The cap and rotor are reasonable, but wires are around $100. I've had problems with generic brand caps and rotors deteriorating rapidly under racing conditions, and losing spark power. Toyota parts just seem to last longer and have fewer problems. Also, I've had 2 sets of aftermarket wires now, and when those break, I put my old OEM wires back on. I'm convinced they're the best until your underhood temps really start going up - in my case, I have a turbo that is pretty good at cracking stock wires, so I use really thick silicone wires and wrap them in heat protectant tape (so is my dizzy, with a little room to breathe).

In terms of spark plugs, get NGK coppers - BCPR6ES-11 for the SC - they're only $1.99 each from most autopart stores and will give the best performance. Make sure you gap them though, as they usually aren't right (.044") and that you change them at least twice per year (I do mine every oil change, or before every race, and If I'm feeling really bored, I'll go buy a whole bunch and then index them until I get a few matched sets).

Oil Filter... now theres a piece thats argued about a lot. I've got a dual filter relocation kit that uses twin Fram PH8-As, but for the stock location, I've been told the Napa golds were supposed to be good. I always just used a generic Fram or Toyota filter on my car. I change my oil often enough that all I worried about was making sure I got the big chunks out. I do get really dirty oil, but rally-x will do that to a car, and thats part of why my oil gets changed often.

Brake pads can be difficult - if you're going to just use it on the street, and never really run the brakes hard, the OEMs are fine, but... if you own one of these cars, I've only ever met 1 person who doesn't like to go for a good spirited drive every once in a while. With that in mind, I reccomend either Porterfield R4S, or Hawk HPS as they don't have to warm up like race compound pads, but will bite harder, and fade less than stock. Also, make sure you do a full fluid flush on your brakes and clutch. Bumping up to DOT4 fluid can be very helpful too, as it takes heat better.

If you have more questions, just ask! TheAmazingDave02-21-2006, 09:13 PM^This guy is awesome. :) CpuZapper02-21-2006, 10:47 PMWhy thanks 86mister2 - I try. Hey, you ever gonna call me about your turbo setup? If you don't soon, I'm going to forget all the great ideas I came up with :dunno: I have crap for memory anymore, as I'm always working on so many things that I can't keep track of one from the next. Right now I'm trying to finalize my next setup, fix my megasquirt, and figure out why my car is only running on 1 or 2 cylinders, then 3, then only 4 occasionally under light throttle... I can't tell if its injectors, or ignition, or worse yet internals. I didn't have a lot of time to troubleshoot this weekend. It's been sitting for a few months. I finally have a new working turbo, and all the hoses plus a new intercooler. curvesrgood02-21-2006, 11:57 PMI like the Tom's pads I picked up, they're a bit more grippy than stock but nothing outrageous... I might would upgrade further if I kicked the horsepower up a bit but they seem very good for a nearly stock car. I haven't tried anything but those however, so I don't know as much as these other folks ;) . I can't remember what all we did to the ignition system when we replaced a few things last year, I'll have to take a look. IeatPorche02-22-2006, 12:54 AMThanks everyone for the replies; this was exactly the type of feedback I was looking for. I was a little hesitant to start throwing in new parts as I've read too many articles on the net where people have run out and bought the most expensive or hyped replacement parts for there "2", only to find they net a decrease in performance. I've only had my car for about 5 mnths and am still learning about it so I really appreciate your experience and expertise.

There was one more thing I was wondering about........injector cleaner fuel additives, and engine flush additives you cycle through your motor during and oil change. Do you think they are worth the time and $, are there any risks to injectors or engine seals, and due you recommend any brands.

Thanks again....... TheAmazingDave02-25-2006, 01:09 AMThanks everyone for the replies; this was exactly the type of feedback I was looking for. I'm not a big fan of additives. I run injector cleaner every so often but I'm leary of oil and crankcase additives. I hear SeaFoam works wonders to clean up an old engine but it can wreak havoc on old tired seals.

Why thanks 86mister2 - I try. Hey, you ever gonna call me about your turbo setup? Yea, I know I've been lagging on that. :( I'll give you a call when I know for sure what my plans are. This new truck I got threw a big wrench in the works, as I'm now faced with a car payment for the first time in my life. But I'll probably give you a call soon as I still want to turbo the Deuce. The insurance check from the recent accident should be a nice step in the forward direction. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
