View Full Version : engine swaps?

DriftergrlMR-212-20-2005, 10:01 PMokay one is who has the best deals on an egine swap? and second what woudl be best to go with a rear half cut or rear clip, or get a complete engine swap without the rear clip just the engine, trans ecu and uncut wiring harness. and how do you do an engine swap on a 91 MR-2 do you yank iy out like other engines or do is there an engine cradle that you unbolt and the engine sits on that? Node12-20-2005, 10:23 PMWell, the MR2 engines can come out the top or bottom. Most people tend to pull the rear cross brace when dropping the engine out the bottom. As far as swaps go, If you want just a turbo 3S-GTE engine get the complete clip. That will make things a lot easier since you wont have to source any parts. If you arent doing it yourself find a reputable shop that has proven they can do the swap quickley. www.mr2guru.com is a good example, 2day NA to turbo swaps are common for them. Just this past week they did THREE!!!

If you are looking for an undtraditional swap, spend a month or two reading online and doing research so that you will know ALL the details before attempting this stuff.

Jim DriftergrlMR-212-21-2005, 01:35 PMthanks can i buy a rear clip from them also? and i will be doing the swap with me and a couple of friends so im not to worried but thamks for the advice. i know it will be harder but i like working in my own car no offense to anyone. Weasy2k12-21-2005, 01:41 PMyou can buy rear clips from differnet people...if you want a bit more power out of the box then the most commen swap is the GENIII 3s-gte...it takes a bit more work to install but drops inplace with minor changes.

Or check ebay. thats a good idea... DriftergrlMR-212-23-2005, 06:00 PMehh... im kinda in the middle really more like the mid-west so im gonna have to pay shiping and handling so, but my b/f's dad has a truck that we can pick it up in so its not to bad.

which way is the easiest to get the engine out and in? and i am gonna rebuild the engine, i plan on saving a lot of money before i do the swap and rebuilding it so the engine will be reliable. and wont break as often. Weasy2k12-23-2005, 06:14 PMThe way i do it is i lift the rear of the car way up using 6 ton jackstands...and using the engine hoiist i lower the engine down onto a little furnature dolly and pull it out...

of course after i removed the crossmember and whatnot... Node12-23-2005, 06:58 PMPshhh, weasy - thats way too much work.

The way I do it is to do most of the prep work for pulling the motor while the car is on jack stands. Then I lower the engine down and tilt it. Once you have the angle right, you can just lift the engine right out the top.

No special "furnature dolly" required. Just a jack, stands and, the cherry picker ;) Scairy looking, yes but very effective and efficent. Weasy2k12-24-2005, 04:18 AMPshhh, weasy - thats way too much work.

p[ffft boring :P

the furnature dolly is a easier way...i have sine broken that dolly(tacoma won that battle) and now use a piece of carpet...its very easy :) DriftergrlMR-212-24-2005, 06:21 PMhmm..... ill have to find some one around here with an MR-2 that has done a engine swap and get them to help. LOL but yea sounds like good couple of weekends worth of work though. but not to worried though.
