View Full Version : Tools and Machines Snap-on tools are #1

dee8o804-20-2008, 04:05 AMi have a set of snap on picks for elec work. awesome. the ergonomic pliers are awesome , ratchets , soap is a must have!!!! too bad i cant afford allthe tools that id like. hella expensive! but well worth it for their specialty items.

did i mention that the soap is the bomb? TomsMR204-20-2008, 04:28 PMlol, if theres one snapon tool that i have to admit just pure sucks and is a ripoff, its the picks!

the new 80 tooth ratchet is BADASS though. expensive, but its easily the best ratchet on the market.

when it comes to strange length/shape/design wrenches pliers and sockets, snapon rocks. their everyday stuff is really just too expensive. check out SK for normal stuff  RedTuna04-21-2008, 05:45 PMI've lusted for snap-on torque wrenches. Bought them for the shops but can't justify the price for the home mechanic, though. canadam04-21-2008, 05:49 PMI've been looking for a good deal on a Snap-On multi-bit screwdriver, but they're hard to come by much below retail. My dad has one and it's great. Something I'd actually spend the extra money on :) nate27704-21-2008, 06:01 PMTH737
Ratchet, Round Head, Long Flex-Handle, Soft Grip, 6 7/8"

the best 1/4" ratchet ever made TomsMR204-21-2008, 07:07 PMI've been looking for a good deal on a Snap-On multi-bit screwdriver, but they're hard to come by much below retail. My dad has one and it's great. Something I'd actually spend the extra money on :)

the snapon screw drivers with the teeth on them (anti cam out) are AWESOME!

id just get a number 2 phillips, they're about 15 bucks and worth it.. the rest dont have much benefit. canadam04-21-2008, 07:18 PMGood point, I usually use a drill to drive Robertson screws and rarely run into a common head anyway. Gotta link? TomsMR204-22-2008, 06:59 AMi dont think snapon allows anyone to sell their tools, except the snapon trucks and their own site.. i could be wrong, but ive never seen them for sale anywhere.

.. or you can grab them off ebay for 1/2 the price of new. the lifetime warranty is for anyone, even without receipt.

SGDP42IRAO, Screwdriver, PHILLIPS ACR, Soft Grip, Orange, #2 tip, 9" (http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=hand&item_ID=74529&group_ID=2639&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog)

thats the regular #2 (which is the size of damn near every screw except the tiiiiny electronics ones or huge industrial ones).. says unavailable for whatever reason. Big Thurs05-10-2008, 06:52 AMlol, if theres one snapon tool that i have to admit just pure sucks and is a ripoff, its the picks!

Word.
I have been dissapointed with 90% of the snap-on tools that I have used, especially for the price. On the opposite end of the spectrum, has anyone tried or heard of King Tony tools? King tony screwdrivers are the best. Nobody at the shop I work at has ever broken a king tony tool. My latest purchase was a 1/4 and 3/8 gearless stubby ratchets from Titan. Next to my air ratchets, those gearless ratchets are the best thing I have bought. TomsMR205-18-2008, 05:28 AMive been disappointed with extremely few snapon tools.. id say 90% of their stuff is as good, or better than other tools.. as far as professional tools go, snapon is usually the same price or marginally more than other tools, and that extra price goes towards a massive network of dealers that will offer support and service for life. if i want to try to pry an engine out with a #2 screwdriver, i can do it and have a new on in my hand in a matter of days.. thats worth a few extra bucks to me. wetherbymr205-18-2008, 10:26 PMLOVE SNAP ON. We swapped every tool bin from Craftsman over to SNAP ON, including our Temp duty bins (the ones that travel with us).....All on the Air Forces buck of course LOL wetherbymr205-18-2008, 10:27 PMlol, if theres one snapon tool that i have to admit just pure sucks and is a ripoff, its the picks!

I hope the picks dont suck to bad. We just special ordered a set of brass pics TomsMR205-19-2008, 04:51 AMif a socket has a poor manufacturing tolerance, it'll round off bolts and be useless.

if a pick has a hideous manufacturing tolerance and is .050 off center.. who cares, it'll still pick at crap! theres no moving parts, no critical fit components, its just a stick of metal on a handle, a 20 dollar set will do you as good as a 150 dollar snapon set. dee8o805-21-2008, 12:01 AMidk imho... snap on has come through for me many times.
yes- for everyday tools ... and simple things.. ill opt to go the cheaper way out.
but for specialty things like the ratcheting screwdriver, certain pliers (like the ergonomic handle ones) , picks (i liked them) the screwdriver bit set (if worn just exchange) , tap/die set... etc... has got to be snap on.
im slowly making my collection of tools bigger and bigger.
ill pay the price if it works. nothing is more fustrating than not having the right tools to do the job.
saves me time , headaches, bodyaches, injury, and it does save me money. so its worth the money for them. especially when theres a lifetime warranty for the best tools. KingCeaser05-24-2008, 08:06 PMsnap on is the shiot. i blew 10 grand last year on just the crap on truck. im more than happy with my purchases an i love the tools. theres always going to be the argument that it doesn't matter but all in all i notice a big difference between a craftsman ratchet an a snap on or mac. it just feels better an moves better an sounds so much smoother. i love all my tools an would never regret buying them. i just bought the new mac tool cart that slides open with the stainless tops, its the best ever. i do have some cheaper tools that still do work but they break a lot. everything i bought from harbor freight is trashed or broken. i think it all depends on how much you use your tools an what for. i work a body shop job using tools all day an then leave there an go to my shop an work on more cars with my snap on tools. all in all i love em. so worth it never use anything else. got my million dollar snap on jacket, socks, hat, t shirts, pants, all kinds of crap they give me i never wear because its so redneck . TomsMR205-24-2008, 11:19 PMif you use them daily, theres no substitute for a really good ratchet. worth every penny.

i have a mac cart too.. i hate mac stuff though  CyFi06-01-2008, 05:02 AMif a socket has a poor manufacturing tolerance, it'll round off bolts and be useless.

BS. I was using mine today and i was prying it with a ton of force, pulled it out expecting a new shape, but to my surprise it did not bend at all. The stuff they use in it is some kind of hardened steel or something, and the handles are awesome. Hybrid1010-27-2008, 07:41 PMhttp://i426.photobucket.com/albums/pp350/justjohn10/IMG_2226.jpg

73.5" of man box..... it was a good deal but still hurts ......its like $5 a day for the rest of my life.....i have modded it now.... two stickers and stainless drawer gaurds and a stainless top Big Thurs11-16-2008, 02:47 PMDoesn't the Danahar group manufacture a lot of snap-on/blue point hand tools now? Don't get me wrong about my previous comment about hating 90% of tha snap on stuff that I have used. The scenario has always been me borrowing a tool (usually a specialty tool of some fashion) then saying, "this is a nice tool..It costs HOW MUCH new?!?" They are quite excellent tools, and they are not afraid of their own warranty however, I live in south georgia; we don't see many rusty cars which require fancy sockets to insure fastener grippage (yes, grippage) on rusty bolts. As far as ratchets go, about 8 months ago I purchased a 1/4 and 3/8 set of Titan gearless stubby ratchets (~$40 from the truck!). I use them more than my air ratchets now. I have used cheaters on them and spilled dexron all over them and they are still like new. I also have recently purchased one of those IR TiMAX 1/2" impact wrenches. If you look carefully you'll see that Snap On, Matco, and SK (probably more, too) sell the same gun from the same factory with a different name and color.

I own, and am very happy with, a Sams Club tool box. In our shop we don't move boxes around due to space constraints and thus we don't need a $1000 set of blingin castors. What sold me is the ball bearing slides. They are tighter and smoother than any Craftsman (even professional) box, my boss' Blue Point box and one of my coworker's new (pawn shop deal) Snap on box. Some may prefer one feel over the other, but I like tight slides (no pun intended) with zero play and none of those fancy latching mechanisms like craftsman's "griplatch" and snap on's latching scheme. (please spare me the chinese junk lecture until you actually break one of these boxes)

Our Mac guy went out of business several months ago, and I agree that their stuff is mostly crap now. They still have some great tools; for example, I bought a 1/4 and 3/8 25ft/lb stubby air ratchet set (on sale) for $150. They have proven tough and reliable thus far, and they say "Made in Japan" on the back. :D

I guess the point that I'm trying to get across is don't let yourself get caught up with a sales pitch. Just because they say its the best doesn't mean it is. Talk with an experienced tech and get some different opinions to make an educated decision. The best tool is the one that you like best, whatever the reason may be.

BTW, Hybrid10, I saw one of those used on a truck. Awesome box, but $2500 tag, and it was pretty heavily used. TomsMR211-17-2008, 01:25 AMive heard lots good about titan gearless ratchets (3 degrees of sweep!), our tool trucks sell them too. theres lots of good off-brand tools.

afaik, snapon makes all of their own tools. bluepoint is the knockoff crap. no one else has a replica redline impact gun. matco and mac both have other companies making their tools overseas now though.

mac sells an impact air ratchet now.. looks like a normal ass air ratchet, but it impacts! im intrigued.. Everett11-17-2008, 01:32 AMLets say one of us pull a heist on a loaded Snap-on truck like they would a Brinks armored bank truck!

I like Snap-on alot. But if I'm on a budget I'll only buy other brand tools with a lifetime warranty. jazzcornet11-30-2008, 10:00 PMnext to my 3/8" snap-on impact, the blue point stubby gear ratchets were my best investment. the only tool i use more than those is my 3stage-3phase air compressor for media blasting......and that my friends, is still hurting my wallet and will continue to hurt my wallet for generations to come TomsMR212-02-2008, 12:35 AMthe snapon guy even told me to just buy gearwrench brand ratchet wrenches, the bp ratchets had waaaay too much play! very sloppy stuff.

i love love love my 3/8th snapon impact though! thats a damn fine tool. ve2dict12-09-2008, 03:24 PMabout 80 % of my tools are snap on and 20% mac and snap on is def the best although i dont like most of their air tools. one of the have to get snap on tools though is the mini battery powered screwdriver. it come with 2 batteries that charge up really quick and it has enough power to break looser most 10 and 8 mm bolts. its great i think its like 120$ of course 2 weeks after i got it they come out with one that has a clutch so i was pissed but some day it will break and ill get a new one with a clutch for free ve2dict12-09-2008, 03:25 PMoh and the picks...depends on which ones u get the ones with the mini screwdriver type grips are great the ones with the rubber sleeve on them suck and are exactly like craftsman picks MR-3sgte01-17-2009, 04:53 PMSnap on tools are good but the prices on some of the tools are kinda high. Just cause you think snap on is the best doesnt mean they are. Take alook into matco they sell tools as/almost if not better then snap on and they have better prices. Why waste 120+ dollers on a 80 tooth snap on ratchet when craftsman ratchets work just great. Any serious mechanic that wants to save their money knows what he should buy from matco or snap on and what to buy from harbor freight or sears i only go with snap on and matco for specialty tools. Hybrid1001-19-2009, 07:14 PMmost of the air tools are made by the same ppl and snapon.cornwell, mac, matco get there names stamped on them....even the screw drivers and some wrenchs are made in the same plant...just different name stamped on them. TomsMR201-27-2009, 01:47 AMWhy waste 120+ dollers on a 80 tooth snap on ratchet when craftsman ratchets work just great.
because they dont work great.. in fact they work terrible... many, many times worse than a snapon ratchet. the matco one is like a craftsman one that doesnt break, its still a pretty loose ratchet though. we're not all turning a wrench on a nice big open work bench. when you have a bolt to remove with about 4 inches of clearance on both sides, those extra teeth are the difference between having something off in 20 seconds verus 5 minutes.. when you're paid by time, you're losing money goofing off with cheap tools.

nothing touches the snapon 80 tooth, its worth every cent. the time it has saved me has literally paid for itself over a sloppy 36 tooth craftsman.

craftsman professional is a 72 tooth. i returned one at least once a month until i got fed up and got the snapon. it broke that much, thats rediculous. my snapon ratchet is finer, and hasnt so much as skipped once.

im kinda with you half way though.. you dont need to blow thousands on a box filled with 100% snapon tools. some tools are worth every cent, some arent.. some are worth paying extra for the weekly service. KingCeaser02-03-2009, 10:04 PMsnap on is the best tool for any job.. But they are expensive. it just depends on how much you use your tools. If you wrench for a living its well worth it to spend all that extra money. I actually get frustrated using other peoples tools when im helping them on something. Its just not the same......... An all my snap on tools just got stolen from my shop. they pryed my box open somehow an took everything in the top 3 drawers....Im pretty pissed..an they funked up my box Brad Bedell02-10-2009, 07:21 PMlol, if theres one snapon tool that i have to admit just pure sucks and is a ripoff, its the picks!

I second the picks!

However, I have a K-D tools swivel head ratchet that's fine tooth. I reach over that 80 tooth Snap-on 3/8 drive every time for it. When I was wrenching daily, I replaced it once ever 2 years. (usually split the head with a 3' cheater bar on and not stripped the gears)

Now, the 1/4 drive swivel head snap on ratchet, I own 3 of them. TomsMR202-13-2009, 07:48 PMthe swivel head.. as in the one where the actual head rotates, or the flex head?

i just realized a 10mm deep socket on a 12 inch extension fits over the handle of my snapon 1/4 drive ratchet, making the longest, most rediculously leveraged 1/4 inch tool ever.. ive been using it to loosen unreasonably large bolts :) Big Thurs02-14-2009, 03:55 PMthe snapon guy even told me to just buy gearwrench brand ratchet wrenches, the bp ratchets had waaaay too much play! very sloppy stuff.

I have been impressed with the durability of various tools from Agri-Supply. They carry King Tony hand tools (not to be confused with King **** :D), and I must say nobody at my shop has broken a King Tony socket, ratchet, or screwdriver. We frequently use impacts on the 1/2 in. drive sockets and beat the crap out of the screwdrivers. Even the rubber has not deteriorated a bit after years of use in the shop. Did I mention that King Tony hand tools have a lifetime warranty?

Another tool that I think is a fantastic deal are some of the pliers. Several months ago I purchased a pair of Agri-Supply brand right angle 10" pliers, and they have survived their share of abuse to say the least. One more thing: the Ag-Supply flex head gearwrench knockoffs are also EXTREMELY durable, despite having more play than the Gearwrench brand counterparts.

Sorry for the semi off-topic post. BrokeMoFuGgA06-15-2009, 06:13 PMI wish i could afford Snap On lol im just a broke @ss craftsman guy lol.i just wanted something with a warranty that if i broke it i could get it replaced.i wasted alot of money when i was younger on "knuckle busters",that when you broke'em that was it! Sh0ty06-17-2009, 09:43 PMIf I were to get a snap on 80 tooth, would I want to use that as my regular wrench or just use a bog standard craftsman and then the snap on for tight spaces? I used to have a stanley pro, which I liked, but it blew up recently and had too much slop. tstoney8206-17-2009, 10:03 PMI've been looking for a good deal on a Snap-On multi-bit screwdriver, but they're hard to come by much below retail. My dad has one and it's great. Something I'd actually spend the extra money on :)

just got mine a few days ago for $125 with the flashlight. TreyMR206-18-2009, 09:28 PMI just bought a snap on 3/8'' drive impact and 1/4'' air ratchit and I love them. The 3/8''s impact has 450ft-lb's or toque :O Sh0ty09-06-2009, 01:12 AMGot my 3/8 drive 80 tooth ratchet from Snap-on and it kicks serious butt. The ratchet is so smooth, and compared to my crapsman ratchet... well, you really can't compare the two, it's just that good. Worth every cent. Also, someone said it was $120.00, I paid 2/3 that.
