View Full Version : Composite Materials Got bored on this 4 day weekend...

turboguy11-26-2005, 07:34 PMAmong other things, (changing the exhaust on the wifes car, and finishing up some other interior pieces), I decided it was time to hack into my factory stereo surround piece. I bought a HKS C.A.M.P. system a while back and have been thinking how I want to integrate this into my car. I'v thought about making a custom piece that replaces the map lights and putting a display there, but decided against it. I thought about using one of those double-din non foldout screen dvd players, but I relised I wouldn't be able to keep the screen on the camp and change stations, cd's etc. Not to mention, its not the over-the-top ideas that I normally have. I looked around and found that the biggest screen that anyone had integrated into their dash piece was a 7", while losing the stereo. I decided to challenge myself to do a semi-custom stereo surround that would let me keep my stereo in the lower din pocket and also have the room to integrate an 8" tft lcd screen into the piece.

Well, so far, so good. I've spent around 20 minutes total on this and its already looking good. I cut the center of the dash piece out with a close-quarters hack saw and trimmed the lcd bezel accordingly. I also trimmed the stereo surround piece and I'm integrating it into the piece as well. Here is everything trimmed and ready for bondo:

I used Bondo Ultimate mainly because its designed for plastics and cures FAST. (I was sanding 5 min after application) This is the first application of bondo and the first sanding. I need to do probably 2 more bondo coats, more sanding, glazing and spot putty, more sanding, a flat black base, and finally, wrapping in carbon fiber. After the first coat of bondo:

I know, some of you may be saying "That looks like shit!" Well, screw you. :) After it is all said and done, it will be another masterpiece creation of mine that I will be very proud of. I figure another week of 1/2 an hour per night and it'll be ready for finishing. By the way, the hole for the climate control unit is being filled in as a custom housing for my Blitz SBC-iD boost controller and my PowerMeter-iD unit. The ashtray has already been filled and drilled for my alarm LED and 2 Switches for my aux fuse box. (7 circuit) I WILL have my car back together one day!!! blazinmr211-27-2005, 02:28 PMLooks good, I can't wait to see the finished product. DrPaine11-30-2005, 07:21 PMyea, I'm lookign forward to seeing more! Looks good so far. SKYMR211-30-2005, 07:48 PM"That looks like shit!" Tyler11-30-2005, 10:16 PM"That looks like shit!"
"maybe it thinks you look like shit" Weasy2k12-01-2005, 03:21 AMwow dude awsome! i have been collecting parts for my mr2's carputer but the screen was my biggest fear....i build engines....not dash's....omg...
(my thread in sound off) SKYMR212-01-2005, 04:35 AM"maybe it thinks you look like shit"
"you look like shit" Mister-Twoster12-01-2005, 10:08 AMwhy is that quoted? Looking good, keep it up :D Weasy2k12-01-2005, 03:02 PM"you look like shit"
"your shit" SKYMR212-01-2005, 09:28 PM"your shit"
yup just like "my shit" SKYMR212-01-2005, 09:28 PMnice work either way... :) SKYMR212-01-2005, 09:29 PMturboguy.. you ever thought about the vinyl wrap thing ? Mr2insane12-01-2005, 09:52 PMhmm curious about vinyl wrap.. how would you do that.

Turboguy why do you need to paint a black base if you are going to wrap it. Just curious SKYMR212-01-2005, 10:04 PMInsane. i saw some one done it once. it almost like those heatshrink thingie. the outcome are pretty nice since it able to wrap around corner and stuff too.. i'll ask for you Weasy2k12-02-2005, 02:26 AMwhat is this wrap shiz.... turboguy12-02-2005, 05:43 AMhmm curious about vinyl wrap.. how would you do that.

Turboguy why do you need to paint a black base if you are going to wrap it. Just curious

Its just so you can't see any of the other colors through the weave of the fabric.

And no, I like carbon fiber wrapping much more than vinyl. turboguy12-02-2005, 07:52 PMWell, here is piece after all the sanding and plastic work. I can't fill in the climate control hole until I have my SBC-iD and PowerMeter in hand. I plan on flush mounting those in the climate control spot. After that, I can paint and carbon wrap.

Finished plastic work:

I molded everything together so it is flush across the front. There are no dips, visible junctions, or raised spots to detract from its beauty. Too bad you can't see it in person. It looks absolutely amazing. canadam12-02-2005, 08:27 PMlooks good man !

I may come to you for help when I do a little fiberglass over the holidays here (if I get around to it), if that's okay with you ! turboguy12-02-2005, 08:48 PMJust fine by me. I'm here to help. :) Weasy2k12-03-2005, 04:29 PMyea ditto you did some good work there man DrPaine12-04-2005, 04:32 PMdas hot! heh mymr2turbo12-05-2005, 01:43 AMnice work I can't wait to see the final outcome Weasy2k12-05-2005, 02:14 AMyou decided on what your going to do with it all....get a carputer or something? DrPaine12-05-2005, 07:49 PMmmm, carputer, those are hot. I want one so bad but its so far down on the shopping list its unreal. turboguy12-05-2005, 07:55 PMI have it to control and view my HKS C.A.M.P. computer. My MR2 isn't anything fancy like a show car, its meant to be a fast fun car that just looks good as a benefit. I have computers at home and work. I don't need any in my cars too. :) DrPaine12-05-2005, 09:29 PMThats what the carputer does! :p Im gonna eventually install one to view some engine vitals and stats and such plus I hope to have a program that datalogs everything and also enables you to alter settings on the fly. But thats a few years down the road. turboguy12-05-2005, 09:32 PMMy camp does all of that and for only $219. They are getting rather hard to find though. DrPaine12-05-2005, 10:03 PMhrm, damn you. haha, what model HKS Camp do you have? I'll have to put that on my xmas list if they are getting hard to find. That woudl solve all my problems. turboguy12-05-2005, 10:33 PMThere is the camp system, which monitors most of what you would want to see, and the add-on junction box which lets you add an array of whatever sensors you choose. DrPaine12-05-2005, 10:52 PMHow do u think this looks? It only comes with the camp module and remote/remote sensor but maybe you can tell me if its a good deal or not?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HKS-Camp-Computerized-Automobile-Multi-Play-System_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33596QQitemZ8019 365428QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW DrPaine12-05-2005, 10:57 PMWow, im doign some research on this Camp system. This is incredible. Exactly what Im looking for, laptop compatable so I can use my laptop. wow. FISH MODE!!! hahahaha turboguy12-06-2005, 05:54 AMThat doesn't have any of the wiring harnesses with it. I think I would avoid that one. And its used. If you are serious about getting one, Andy Kiel can get you one for about 200-250 NEW. He runs a hard-to-find and JDM store on ebay.

His store link is here. (http://search.stores.ebay.com/JDM-Export-Vehicle-Solutions_hks_W0QQfciZ5QQfclZ3QQfsnZJDMQ20ExportQ2 0VehicleQ20SolutionsQQfsooZ2QQfsopZ3QQftsZ2QQsasel Z33155577QQsofpZ0) email him, and let him know what you are looking for. (CAMP unit only. the junction box and misc sensors are still available through HKS dealers.) DrPaine12-06-2005, 01:22 PMI am very serious, I am going to wait till after xmas but thanks for the link. This is exactly, to the T, of what I want. It does what I want plus more. TRD-CEO12-06-2005, 01:29 PMWhere are you moving the stock a/c controls? Sounds like you've moved them and replaced them with your blitz controller if I'm reading this right. turboguy12-06-2005, 05:25 PMThey've been replaced completely. I am completely removing the whole HVAC system. The car doesn't see any temps below 70 degrees and maybe 500 miles per year. I also removed airbag ecu, cruise control and ecu, and just about everything else that weighs anything thats not needed. Weasy2k12-07-2005, 03:17 AMwoot! wieght savings :)

Thats pritty cool man im using my carputer to interface with my standalones sensor so i can have around 10 gauge son the screen if i wanted :) turboguy12-26-2005, 06:41 PMI guess its time for an update. I haven't has alot of time to do much the last three weeks with both my and my wifes daily drivers breaking down, but I have managed to finish fitting the LCD screen, headunit, and starter pushbutton into their new home. Everything turned out very nice and flush. Too bad the pictures don't do it justice. I'm sorry for the shitty pics.

http://img272.imageshack.us/img272/4875/12dn1.th.jpg (http://img272.imageshack.us/my.php?image=12dn1.jpg)

http://img272.imageshack.us/img272/3051/22pv1.th.jpg (http://img272.imageshack.us/my.php?image=22pv1.jpg)

As soon as I get my blitz components (still waiting) I can close off the climate control hole and laminate the whole piece in carbonfiber. Finally that will be off of my work bench. :) canadam12-26-2005, 06:54 PMnot surprisingly, I haven't gotten around to starting my project :) PHOENIX12-28-2005, 09:26 AMi hope the bondo isnt being used to hold anything in place, in no way will it hold up especially since the plastic will flex when you are installing it back into the dash and the bondo will crack. I would like to suggest you fill the back of the plasic with mar-glass, alot of it, just cover the whole back of the plastic inside the grooves and around the grooves. This will stiffen the plastic piece up alot.

other than that, its looking really good! glad to see other mr2 owners taking this project on. If you havnt seen this site, check it out, its alot of help when it comes to software and hardware of carputers. www.mp3car.com

Heres my setup.

lilliput 7" touchscreen
Playstation 2
Toshiba Laptop behind seat (broken screen so i had nothing better to do with it)
Microsoft streets GPS Navigation
RoadRunner software (controls all media) I definatly recommend or use media center, both can be downloaded at www.mp3car.com

http://tinypic.com/63rgue DrPaine12-28-2005, 06:32 PMThat is a hot car Phoenix, other than the floor mats! :p Mister2.212-28-2005, 08:53 PMLooks nice Phoenix but I think it would look better if it were painted black. PHOENIX12-29-2005, 03:46 AMya, i got rid of the floor mats right after that trip, never really liked em anyway.

Im in the thought process of changing the interior alot. Im considering going with a suede interior but i am having color decision problems. ill get a suggestions thread going soon. DrPaine12-29-2005, 06:47 PMI have my interior in my s10 blazer wrapped in black suede. Its fantastic. I love it minus the clean up is a ***** sometimes. Using a soft bristle brush gets very old. Dumbscout01-15-2006, 06:49 PMHow is this dash project going? I would love to see the final project. Dumbscout02-05-2006, 06:24 PMAnything? turboguy02-05-2006, 10:37 PMI've changed my mind on the layout a little bit and I'm currently trying to source another center piece. I'm moving the stereo down to where the hvac controls were and putting my Blitz acc.'s up top. PHOENIX02-06-2006, 05:04 AMcool man, keep us updated. id love to see some pics! Dumbscout05-25-2006, 09:38 PMany updates? turboguy05-26-2006, 08:11 PMI've decided to sell my MR2. I'm putting my extra money into my bikes instead. I plan on sticking around though. I kinda like it here. :D Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
