mopwer01-21-2008, 12:46 PMYouTube - 1-20-08 AZ Solo MR2 Turbo

Great time. Davis01-21-2008, 12:58 PMMan that looks fun. :) mopwer01-21-2008, 12:59 PMBy the looks from some of the pics, I need to get a handle on the lean now. I'm running KYB AGX adjustable struts and found that setting them on 3 in the front and 1 in the back kept it pretty neutral. I read that there are some that don't care for these struts, but so far for the money, I love them! I keep them on 1 for the street and haven't had any issues with slow rebound.

Greg pothiawala78601-21-2008, 01:30 PMYou're lucky to be able to Auto-x in January. How'd you mount that camera? Harness bar (I cant see one in the pics)? I have a piece of aluminum bar with 2 holes drilled for the headrests with a camera mount on the other end from my last car, but I dont think it'll work on the MR2 because of the turbo center console. mopwer01-21-2008, 01:37 PMYou're lucky to be able to Auto-x in January.

That's why I love living in Phoenix, racing year around! I'll be hitting the drag strip next weekend to see what the 2 has in it.

How'd you mount that camera?

I'm using the Cleat (http://www.vacuummounts.com/prodpics.php?gclid=CKPftaDW2pACFQdjsgod1lUPYQ). Worked pretty well. Just mounted it to the back window to get the camera as high as possible. Then you get the best perspective and can see the cones coming up.

Greg pothiawala78601-21-2008, 01:41 PMHow stable is the Cleat? I've never been a fan of suction type camera mounts, worrying about how it might fly off somewhere throughout the course.

Howd you end up doing? What class are you running in? mopwer01-21-2008, 01:49 PMHow stable is the Cleat? I've never been a fan of suction type camera mounts, worrying about how it might fly off somewhere throughout the course.

Its very stable. I believe they use the same type of suction cup for placing windshields. Even over the defroster it worked well which surprised me. Plus you pump it up with a button on the side and if it starts loosing vacuum you will be able to tell because it will show a red line on the button. I recommend it. I bought the cheaper one and it would have been easier to mount it on that short rear window if I could rotate the mount in one more axis. Worked out fine though.

Greg pothiawala78601-21-2008, 01:52 PMI used something similar to this:

MR2 Owners Club Message Board™ (http://mr2oc.com/showthread.php?t=158407)

I have yet to try it on this car to see if it fits, because it seems like the center console on mine would get in the middle. I could always remove it though. But then again, I've got plenty of time, Auto-x season doesnt start here until mid-April. mopwer01-21-2008, 01:58 PMHowd you end up doing? What class are you running in?

I did ok. I'm running in Street Mod. Since my car is under modified for the class, I'm not competative, but I have a lot of fun and try to improve my driving to better my last time...

Greg goddom01-23-2008, 06:39 PMVery cool, I want to autoX this spring when the snow is off the ground. I bought the car specifically for this. Unfortunately, it is also my DD for now, but oh well.

I have a few questions about AutoX (I hope this is not a forum fopah)

1. What is involved in "teching-in"? Should I have my spare tire out of the car? My car car has a little bit of a wobble at freeway speeds, and when I jack the car up and shake teh wheel different ways, it all seems solid there, but would that disqualify me?

2. Are there practice runs? How many runs do you do in a day? Even if its after the competition part, I would like to make a couple more rounds around the course if possible.

I think thats all I have. Thanks for sharing the pics and video. kbrew899101-23-2008, 07:00 PMjust a little bit behind on the slaloms and you could be a bit closer to cones it looks like, but still very good :)

goddom - you'll want to pull any and all loose items, jack, spare, floormats out of the car before tech. They'll likely check your battery to make sure its secure, make sure your floormat isn't there to get caught under the pedals, make sure you don't have any massive leaks, and make sure your tires are going to stay on and aren't corded yet

the # of runs varys from club to club, as do "fun runs" at the end of the day, etc. best to dig up contact info for the club(s) you're going to run with mopwer01-23-2008, 07:35 PMjust a little bit behind on the slaloms and you could be a bit closer to cones it looks like, but still very good :)

Yeah, I got that heads up from some on the AZSolo.com forum. I need to be on the back end of the slaloms and set up better for the faster areas. I was going in too hot in important transition areas.:(

Its funny how the video looks sped up! I should have used the Benny Hill theme music instead.

Yeah, we have Time Only runs after the competition. Number of runs all depends on the size of the course (time to run) and the number of folks that sign up. We usually have 3-4 runs in competition and the same for TO. Great Time and Great People.

Greg kbrew899101-23-2008, 09:27 PMRome wasn't built in a day, keep working on improving (and staying improved) and you'll go far! :) goddom01-23-2008, 09:28 PMWell my battery is secured well, so no problem there. Cool, well it sounds like I shouldn't have a problem getting through inspection since my tires are new but a junky no-name brand (and H rated).

People were talking about ride alongs. Will people ride with me or I ride with them? I would like both. So, I would assume that if I rode with them, it wouldn't be during their actual time trial? kbrew899101-23-2008, 09:29 PMask around about riding with someone as it really depends on the person.

The club also may or may not have instructors present to help... MX45024801-23-2008, 09:45 PMIn NW ohio, you can have 1 person ride with you on your runs. We dont have instructors at the tracks tho to get assistance from. It is the most fun I have ever had in a car!!! Cant wait to try it in my mr2, (i did it in a ford probe gt last time, FWD sucks). Dance_Business01-23-2008, 10:40 PMI had fun each time, but after I did a ride along with one of the top drivers I won! Experiencing someone else's car/driving style is a huge help; even better if you can ask them along with you. mopwer01-23-2008, 10:55 PMI had fun each time, but after I did a ride along with one of the top drivers I won! Agreed, I asked on my autocross forum if someone with a mid-engined car would ride with me and give me some advice on my driving. Well a fellow member with an Elise offered and I knocked a second off on my last run. I also got to ride with him in his Elise with R compound tires. What a machine!! I'm so close to selling the deuce and buying an 05 Elise! I've got so much work in my car it makes it difficult.

If you just ask on the forum someone is usually more than happy to give you some advice even if you don't have "instructors". There is usually someone with more experience that can help.

Greg goddom01-24-2008, 12:03 PMI was reading a thread about the front sway bar bolt holes in the car need to be reinforced due to a cracking issue. Have you gys heard about this and has it been a problem for you? pothiawala78601-24-2008, 12:07 PMI was reading a thread about the front sway bar bolt holes in the car need to be reinforced due to a cracking issue. Have you gys heard about this and has it been a problem for you?

Its usually known to happen when people upgrade the front sway to something stiffer (thicker). Suspension Techniques has a 24mm (maybe 22mm) that is known to do this. There are ways to prevent tear out, including using reinforcement plates, longer bolts, and making the endlink mounting points on the struts stronger. pothiawala78601-24-2008, 12:11 PMSuspension Techniques front sway bar (http://mr2.zhutiblog.com/com/forums/mk-2-mr2/Toyota-MR2-4694-suspension-techniques-anti-sway-bars.html) Gairloch01-24-2008, 05:22 PMHhahahaa, I love the sound track. What's the name of that song?

Nice and smooth with your steering inputs. That little bit of oversteer you got the third run looked like fun :)

How long have you been running autox? mopwer01-24-2008, 05:58 PMHhahahaa, I love the sound track. What's the name of that song?

Driving my Life Away - Eddie Rabbit

Yeah, smoothness is what I'm working on first as I used to be on or off the throttle, not good. I just started last year and have been to maybe 4-5 events. My best time was 53.45 with a Pax% of 825. Slowly getting better.

Putting new struts in and the front camber plates have made the most difference so far. With the front struts set on 3 and the rears on 1, its pretty neutral. I'm craving some V710 tires for the stock 93 wheels. Lot of $$ though.

Greg goddom01-24-2008, 08:17 PMMan I can't wait to race! mopwer01-24-2008, 08:41 PMMan I can't wait to race!

Be careful, grasshopper, its addicting! Next thing you know you're selling you're new flat panel tv to buy some R compound tires.

Greg goddom01-24-2008, 09:27 PMYeah, my ball in chain will keep me in check I am sure :)

I am not sure what I should get first, new wheels (mine are stock 14") or new struts/springs. What do you think? mopwer01-24-2008, 09:44 PMYeah, my ball in chain will keep me in check I am sure :)

I am not sure what I should get first, new wheels (mine are stock 14") or new struts/springs. What do you think?

Don't do anything yet. Run it as is. Has anything been modded yet? It can throw you into a higher class.

Greg goddom01-24-2008, 10:40 PMI have done some maintenance, and in the course of that I have added components that were "performance" upgrades because they were cheaper. I have H&T drop links in the front, pillow mounts in the rear (again because they were cheaper then the OEM strut mounts I could find) and prothane bushings in the front.

I don't think the drop links and pillow mounts would give me an edge, so Im hoping they don't put me in a higher class. Ill probably put the bushings in the rear before the season starts because I am still getting a shimmy at freeway speeds. The struts are stock, and they look ancient but they are still good and stiff.

Does that sound like it would put me in a higher class? HarrisRacing02-01-2008, 10:16 AMI put the ST swaybars on the front and rear, but haven't driven the car yet so I can't tell the difference yet. I will say out of the 10 cars or so that I've put swaybars on this is BY FAR the biggest difference between stock and a "bolt on" standard sway bar that I've seen. They are indeed massive.

Patrick Wheelman_1302-01-2008, 12:22 PMGood to see some new addicts...I mean autocrossers. I've been running B-Stock for a year or two now just for fun. I'm actually going to take a serious crack at at least a local championship this year. I picked up some V710s on clearance from tirerack (they're relatively cheap for the '91 14" rims).

Here's a vid of the first run I made with the "real" tires on the car. It's not pretty, and the last run I made at this event (the video is of ths slowest run...mainly because the camera battery died) was something like 1.6 seconds quicker.

I was also using a suction mount on the rear glass. I had thought about sticking it to the underside of a T-top, but my tether wouldnt' reach that far.

I'm running an ST front bar, with really no other notable mods. I now have camber bolts in the front and a more aggressive alignment for this season. mopwer02-01-2008, 12:25 PMGood to see some new addicts...I mean autocrossers. How do you like those tires? I'm waiting for a sale on the 15s to get them. If I could fit 14s over my 93 brakes, I would since the tires are cheaper.

Greg Wheelman_1302-01-2008, 12:32 PMThey're ridiculous. After running a season on street tires, I basically had to re-calibrate my brain and reaction times. You could spend $500 on a set of these tires and probably blitz a car with $5000 suspension but running street tires. I posted a more thorough writup on my team's site: 11/11/2007 News (http://www.3-zero.net/id17.html)

If you really want to be competitive, tires IMHO, are the #1 mod for autocross. mopwer02-01-2008, 01:17 PMThey're ridiculous. I'm not to the point where I'm trying to be competative, I just want to go faster!! I have some used Hoosiers I'm going to try next event. I need to try to build a trailer hitch for the 2 this weekend so I can tow the race tires.

Greg kbrew899102-01-2008, 01:28 PMyou can fit them all inside the car, been doing it for 5 years now :)

1 in the frunk
1 behind pass seat
2 on top of pass seat
use rear trunk, footwell, and space behind driver's seat for everything else :)

use those big lawn & leaf garbage bags to store the tires in. Helps keep them fresh during storage, keeps the mess of your seats, etc mopwer02-01-2008, 01:43 PMyou can fit them all inside the car, been doing it for 5 years now :)

REALLY! What size tires? I have 205x50r15 hoosier rears and 205x45r15 drag radial fronts. One really fits behind the seat? This is exciting news!

Greg kbrew899102-01-2008, 01:56 PMbeen doing it with everything from 195/205 V710s to 205/225 Hoosiers

with the Hoosiers, you have to put the 205s in the frunk and behind the seat, but the 225s still fit on top of the seat just fine pothiawala78602-01-2008, 03:46 PMkbrew, aren't you using 14" wheels? Whats the aspect ratio on the tires mentioned above? Mopower is using 15" wheels, so I'm trying to see how much of a difference there would be. kbrew899102-01-2008, 04:04 PMyeah I'm on 14s, they're around 50 series or so but I've also carried around my 93 wheels with 205/225-50-15s and they fit fine as well.

The biggest deal for me really on which tire went where was width, not so much overall diameter (only place that mattered really was the one behind the passenger seat) Wheelman_1302-01-2008, 04:06 PMeven used R-comps will be a huge difference vs. street tires.

I didn't believe that 4 tires would fit in a '2 until I saw another local MR2 owner shoehorn them all in. yeah, 2 205/55s/14s and 2 225/50/14s all fit in the car. mopwer02-01-2008, 04:33 PMeven used R-comps will be a huge difference vs. street tires.

I'm gonna go right home and see if they fit!

Tirerack has some pretty nice tire covers for such a thing. $20ea I believe.

Greg kbrew899102-01-2008, 04:38 PMgarbage bags $3.50 for a roll of 40 ;) mopwer02-01-2008, 04:50 PMSorry, they are $20/pair.

Tire Storage (http://tirerack.com/accessories/categories/tire_storage.jsp)

Trash bags work, but I like the wraps!

Greg kbrew899102-01-2008, 05:05 PMI wouldn't turn down a set if they were given to me, but I'm cheap with non-essential stuff like that most of the time :) mopwer02-01-2008, 05:08 PMI wouldn't turn down a set if they were given to me, but I'm cheap with non-essential stuff like that most of the time :)
