View Full Version : NOS in a 5SFE
Mister22u12-26-2007, 06:28 PMOkay, so I like my car and I like drag racing. I've never tried to drag race my 5SFE, but I can imagine the 15-second disgrace that I would churn out in the 1/4 mile.
So, what I had in mind was a 100-shot, for use only at the strip (of course, heheh).
Is this possible? Is there a lot of other issues I would need to do, like changing the timing or fuel pump (or adding a fuel pump)? Let me know what you think.
I'm thinking of a dry system: Amazon.com: NOS 05122NOS Sport Compact Dry Nitrous System Kit: Automotive (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000COVQMA?smid=A30NK7VLP2CI63&tag=pricegrabber2-auto-20&linkCode=asn)
or a wet system:

Thanks for the help!
BTW - the other idea I had was just buying a JDM turbo engine/trans/ECU and doing a swap for less than $2000, but I kind of want something even more esoteric. Ben12-26-2007, 06:56 PMBTW - the other idea I had was just buying a JDM turbo engine/trans/ECU and doing a swap for less than $2000
I would just go this route :) There is more to build upon going this way. scooterman12-26-2007, 07:36 PMa dry shot will pop that engine faster than a * insert dirty phrase here *
should handle a 50 wet shot fine, 100 well good luck with that.
you'll need to retard the timing, you shouldn't need a new fuel pump but it wont hurt. scooterman12-26-2007, 07:42 PMalso something else to add i was reading about that zex system
"Instead of relying on crude micro-switches or push buttons, the ZEX "wet" nitrous system uses advanced electronics to "learn' the throttle position sensors voltage curve."
if you have a 91 or 92 you dont have a voltage curve its either 0V or 5V mrturrari12-26-2007, 07:49 PMA dry shot is no more dangerous then a wet shot if it is installed correctly. As a matter of fact some would argue it is safer because there is less to go wrong.
100 shot is a lot though. That is almost doubling the hp of the engine and you will definitely need a new fuel pump to use it. You will also need fuel management and tuning to make it safe at that level. Just think of it as running 12psi of boost without the restriction of the turbine in the exhaust. Cylinder pressures almost double, heat output also almost doubles so you need to adjust your timing on the fly to compensate. scooterman12-26-2007, 09:22 PMbut a dry shot does not introduce more fuel through the nitrous system. The engine would run lean without a fuel modification. Doing a fuel mod on a 5s to only work when firing a shot of nitrous would be pretty difficult would it not?
a wet system would spray more fuel through the intake a long with the nitrous correct? shimric12-26-2007, 09:45 PMNOS.....

It's nitrous buddy.

 Mister22u12-26-2007, 11:39 PMThis is all very interesting. I'm now thinking of a 50hp wet shot.
The turbo is still an idea, but I'd rather have a choice of when to buy 93 octane. Also, I hear with a turbo you can't just drive to the grocery store and back without waiting for the car to cool down before restart? I dunno, I've never owned a turbo. :-/ Ben12-27-2007, 12:00 AM^ Turbo timers allow the car to run and shut off automatically so you don't have to sit and wait. Gairloch12-27-2007, 12:31 AMWhat do you do is add a little pepsi to the oil in order to prevent coking ... ;) mrturrari12-27-2007, 01:23 AMbut a dry shot does not introduce more fuel through the nitrous system. There is no way any Nitrous system would work without adding fuel somewhere. The engine would just go boom when you started spraying. :) Wet shots add fuel through their own injector before the throttle body. Dry shots add fuel by increasing the pressure at the fuel rail so it is added by using your current injectors. Because of that dry shots are safer because there is less to go wrong and you get more even fueling between cylinders. There are some other good threads here in the Nitrous forum that give more details. mrturrari12-27-2007, 01:44 AMWhat do you do is add a little pepsi to the oil in order to prevent coking ... ;)
I'm going to have to try that.

You only need to let it cool down if you have had it under heavy load for a decent period of time. That will only be when you have been driving aggressively more then a pull or two or you have been driving on the freeway. Also you can immediately start it nothing wrong with that. You just don't want to turn it off with a blazing hot turbo and let the oil cook in there. Just driving normally a few blocks will cool it down so most of the time depending on where you live and where you drive you don't even have to worry about it.
The great thing about turbos is they are always there and ready to go. No bottles to fill and keep warm. :) phantomMR212-27-2007, 01:54 AMYeah, he is right. You only have to let the turbo cool down if you are racing or aggressively boosting. It's almost like a normal car, as you would. Go Turbo man its fun and worth it. $20 says your 16 years old:D or at least still a teenager? im just curious.
the 2nd gen jdm swap is awsome, i'll take boost over nos anyday, just run stock boost driving around town, and when you want real power crank up the boost and you can add anywhere from 10hp-500hp off of boost. mostlikely you'll only get 70-100hp but at least you won't have to call a tow truck to get your mr2 home after a run at the drag strip. :p Mister22u12-27-2007, 05:39 PM$20 says your 16 years old:D or at least still a teenager? im just curious.

Don't be offended unless you want to:D. i just don't think most mature adults think it's a great idea to pop their stock motors with a bunch of nos. but then again you could be a rich adult who doesn't care about money, or a rich kid who doesn't care about money. i would like to know the limits of a stock 5s, and stock 3s on nos cause im curious, but not at the expense of someone will just enough money to afford the nos setup, that would suck, but if you got the $$ go for it i say, just don't forget to a video of it  Mister22u12-27-2007, 06:30 PMi would like to know the limits of a stock 5s, and stock 3s on nos cause im curious, but not at the expense of someone will just enough money to afford the nos setup, that would suck, but if you got the $$ go for it i say, just don't forget to a video of it
That was my intent for asking the question. I was curious to see what others had done with the 5SFE.
I recall the KA24DE (240SX, one of my old choices before I bought an SC2) Could take a LOT of nitrous for some reason. It was a common upgrade for that engine.
do I want to be the 5SFE guinea pig? :undecided I know my wife doesn't want me to be! LOL MR2SW2212-27-2007, 06:40 PMI apologize; I should be happy that someone is taking an interest in me and my car.

HEHE, have you ever dragged anything faster than 15.2? just asking cause a stock jdm 2nd gen swap will put you in the low 14's with a great driver, and a 3rd gen stock will put you in the 13.7 range, just imagine a jdm swap with mods, you can run 12's on the street and 11's on the track with good tires and the proper mods and not risk popping the motor with Nos. Mister22u12-28-2007, 12:38 AMThat is the plan!
The fastest car I've ever driven was a 300zx twin turbo, but not at the track (a testdrive w/o a salesman, heheh). ATSAaron12-28-2007, 12:45 AMI ran a 75 hp Nitrous Express kit (wet kit) on my very first MR2 nearly 10 years ago. No problems other than the clutch.

IMHO, nos should be used to help spool a turbo bigger than my head to help eliminate turbo lag, course they are 1000+hp. Mister22u12-28-2007, 06:39 PMI don't think Nitrous is overrated. It sounds like it's underrated if no one is using it.
Find another mod that guarantees 50hp for $500. Once again, I was just trying to see if there was a big following for it in the MR2 universe. Sounds like there isn't. phzoinkMKII12-28-2007, 06:48 PMI don't think Nitrous is overrated. It sounds like it's underrated if no one is using it.

An ebay turbo can do that. But on a more serious note don't run more than a 50 shot unless you have a backup engine. NOS corrodes everything it touches. I have seen the after effects of a 75 shot on a stock SE-R and that wasn't pretty. MR2SW2212-28-2007, 08:37 PMI don't think Nitrous is overrated. It sounds like it's underrated if no one is using it.

how about 70hp for $30? a MBC every 1 psi you add, add's 10hp. just be careful, that would suck if you did one run and your out a motor for 1 more second less on your quarter mile time.
someone correct me if im wrong, with a honda motor that's running high compression nos would mostlikely pop the motor more so that a larger motor with less compression? kbrew899112-28-2007, 11:41 PMyou should head out to a different kind of track, you'll have alot of fun with just the stock 5SFE there ;)
Summit Point (road course out in WV) is probably pretty close to ya, right? Mister22u12-29-2007, 12:11 AMYou're right. I've done very little autox. Summit Point is about 3 hours from Morgantown, and so it Cleveland and Columbus (I believe there are other autox there).
Actually, every back road in WV is an autox track, heheh. I do understand the oversteer of the MR2, and I'm really glad I got one with ABS when I took a 90 degree turn downhill at 30mph.
I'll look into it.
BTW - Go Clemson on 12/31!! Enthalpy01-02-2008, 12:07 AMNitrous is regarded as dangerous because people half-ass it all the time. It's not actually dangerous when properly done.
Nitrous changes the optimal AFR and spark timing of the motor, much as turbos do. Don't bump the injector pressure, some injectors can't handle that. Optimal spark timing with nitrous is lower than without, all else equal. This is why simply injecting nitrous and fuel pops some motors. Optimal AFR is simply a thermal control mechanism, it varies motor to motor, use to use.
Some motors "take" nitrous better because they came from the factory with a more conservative mapping with more room between MBT and the knock threashold.
The absolute best, most reliable way to do this is to size some huge injectors, setup port injection, let an EMS handle the nitrous fuel and spark, then have a competent tuner setup the whole thing. The least reliable way would be to simply inject enough nitrous to blow the motor on a hot day, then hope for the best.
I prefer a turbo as well. It's always there, no screwing around with a bottle that can literally blow up in an accident, and it's more usable for longer periods of time.
To give you an idea of the chemistry of this, as oxygen concentration goes up, so does the "explosiveness" (kinetics) of the combustion. Nitrous increases this oxygen concentration. An analogy can be a match. Burn it in air (~20% O2 by partial pressure, IIRC) and it will burn slowly and go out. Burn it in a cloud of 100% O2 and it will almost explode. I think you should do some small upgrades first. I used to have an NA MR2, I know there is some stuff out there for it. Just do the simple stuff like header, exhaust, and intake. If you decide to do the Nitrous, do small shots. I had thought about doing that with my NA but I never did, I just think nitrous is almost a sudden shock to the system, IMO. You can also try to shed some weight off the car that will help. Plus everyone always skips the part where you are putting a compressed gas oxidiser in your car a lot of tracks excepting drags are very iffy about NOS/Nitrous you stove your car back to the windscreen and pinch a line you are in big trouble. Call it paranoia but I always bring that up to those that want to run it I've had some fires, had some accidents and compressed gas is never good in an accident even fire extinguishers will blow a car apart if they rupture it's fun stuff. There is always freak accidents waiting to happen but on the list of things I avoid is hydrogen, lpg, nos and cars carrying large amounts of inflammable goods petrol scares me enough.
You haven't sh** your pants until you have been on fire at 100mph in a dry pine forest or seen an oxidised fire in an engine bay aluminium pretty much goes up like magnesium at that point. Mister22u03-25-2010, 08:38 AMI don't know how much of this thread is gospel. It may be me! ;) FreeFall03-25-2010, 09:15 AMNitrous oxide itself isn't flamable, it just fuels a fire. and it would be in the trunk for most mr2 owners anyways. I'm not saying if you get rear ended that there is no chance the bottle will rupture, i just think its unlikely... donnyavery03-25-2010, 10:27 AMi sprayed 80 shot (and yes depending on your jetting you can run a 80 shot) dry kit on my 5sfe celica for 3years and that was bone stock and with no problems it was consistent at the track i now run a 75 wet shot sniper kit on my 4agte and soon as i get my hi-comp 4age (11-1) done im planing a direct port 150 shot. i have installed a lot of nitrous kits and as long as there installed properly and prepped properly before(mainly making sure your bottle is at right presser 950psi) you use it you'll have years of trouble free fun ElDominio01-12-2011, 03:07 AMThread resurrection time (this section's dead anyways)

Thanks I really appreciate it! Nitrous probably has the worst rep of any car mod!? Why? I have no idea even on the 5s it feels soooo smooth.. i was very nervous the 1st time i sprayed thinking all kinds of stuff could go wrong.. as soon as i hit the switch i was in love!! I must have been going a thousand smiles per hour!! Ohh and i almost forgot to mention i have racked up at least 25 bursts of the 55shot and pulled plugs after each run(5 /6bursts) and the plugs are fine show no signs of detonation etc.. now do i keep the 55 shot or jet her down to a 35!? Just to be safe and still be able to spray all day long! I kind of wana see how much abuse the stock 5s can take while i save my pennies.. so when she lets go il just build the motor and give her a nice healthy shot of joose... that leaves me room for improvement such as beams etc.. when im maxed out on the 5s and since all the nitrous stuff is pretty much universal... Did you think to set up a button that your gas pedal hits when it's at full-throttle? that way you can just flip a switch and the button will engage ONLY at full throttle.
I think that's how a lot of the fancy kits work, anyway. sw21TBC04-22-2014, 01:02 PMWell the zex kit I have is originally intended to be connected to the tps(on newer cars) so when the nitrous is armed it will come one only at wot. But since that doest work with the mr2 I briefly contemplated a micro switch for wot only use.. but I remembered that the nitrous will continue to spray for a moment after you let off causing me to turn it off early stay wot for another sec before shifting then fumbling to arm it again for the next gear.. and since I dont have a window switch I still wait til 3k on the tach(where I feel safe?) to turn it on..oh and I really do have to mention having it on button is the shit!! Just the feeling of it in your hand before you...i post some more videos using the new push button..
