selmerguy10-24-2005, 07:52 PMhello all. my name is sam and i just blew up my dsm. it was a turbo 420a motor and i am tired of fixing it. i want a car with more potential so i will be buying a mr2 soon. my question is which mr2 should i buy? i will have about 5000 to spend on it. i have seen many na 91+ for much less but i want to have a street beast so i think i would like a turbo. i am still learning to speak trd but i speak dsm very well. my current problem with my car is the lack of plug and play ems. my car came from the factory na and i rebuilt the motor and turboed it. i dont want to run into the same problem if i buy a na mr2 and then want to go turbo. is there a direct swap between the two motors or will i have to do some more crazy stuff if i buy a na and want to turbo it?

any recomendations on which mr2s to buy will be awesome thanks TheAmazingDave10-24-2005, 08:03 PMWelcome to the board!
I say buy a supercharged Mk1, but then again I'm biased.... ;)

The NA 91+ MR2 has the 5SFE. The turbo engine is the 3SGTE. I c ouldn't tell you how hard it is to do a swap in that generation, but when I swapped the supercharged engine in mine it was a direct drop in, but I used my original tranny and the SC version uses the same block as the NA.

The Mk2T definately has more aftermarket support and more power potential, though. NoSirItsAToyota10-24-2005, 08:10 PMYeah turboing the 420a always leads to destruction.

I was also a DSMer. I used to own a 95 gs-t (hardtop, I friggin hate spyders) and now I own a 93 tsi awd.

You could find a decent turbo for 5k if you just keep looking. I got mine in near mint condition with 94k miles for 5k. Just keep your eyes open! :D DrPaine10-24-2005, 08:23 PMBuying a turbo off the bat is what I woudl recommend but if you cant find a decent priced one. the turbo engine (3sgte) bolts directly into the NA's. Just wiring teh harness's and sensors and some misc stuff. mr2slow4you10-24-2005, 08:45 PM^You also have to swap out the fuel pump. It isn't the easiest of swaps, and you will def cuss alot. I would almost reccomend waiting to find the right turbo mr2. selmerguy10-24-2005, 08:55 PMthanks guys. i just read the whole jdm turbo swap thread and after reading that i will wait and find a good turbo mr2. i was reading the walbro 255 fuel pump write up and it made me laugh. it took me about 30 mins in my dsm. remove back seat and swap the pumps. man they are loud!!!
again thanks and anymore info on these mr2's would be sweet. Mister2.210-24-2005, 09:00 PMKeep an eye out on www.MR2Trader.com for sales. Good luck in your hunt and welcome to the board. :) selmerguy10-24-2005, 09:12 PManother question. is there a difference between the jdm and us spec. turbo motors? i was thinking of getting a turbo mr2 shell and getting a motor and tranny and dropping it in. might save some cash that way. SpeedballTrix10-24-2005, 10:37 PMIf you wanna save cash you can try to find an N/A with a blown motor (or just a cheap N/A) and then swap a 3S-GTE in.
It's a relatively easy swap.
You'll save a bit on the initial cost that way, but the real payoff is that you'll pay much less insurance. selmerguy10-25-2005, 12:44 AMare there any good links to write-ups about this swap? other than the one write-up on this fourm. also is there anyone boosting the na motor? turboguy10-25-2005, 06:51 PMThere aren't many boosting the n/a motor just because of the work and $$$ you need to do it right. You could always s/c it, but that isn't as fun to me. A n/a to turbo swap is not too bad if you hae a good understanding of wiring. That is the major headache. The fuel pump swap is the easiest part. :)

If you get an n/a, you'll want turbo. If you get turbo, you'll want j-spec gen II or III. No matter what you do, if you modify it, you'll always want more!!

So, I say good luck in your hunt, whatever that may be, and WELCOME!!

That is soo true, I bought an N/A. Then I wanted to turbo the N/A. I started buying 5sfte parts. Soon I was like, hrm, I want turbo. So I bought a turbo mr2. Now I want more power So I'm looking to a JDM gen II. LOL, It never ends!!! selmerguy10-25-2005, 08:28 PMsounds like the thing for me to do is buy a na and do a genII or III swap. other then motor and tranny are there any differences between the na and turbo. ie drums in the back like dsm's or different suspension? V6'er10-25-2005, 09:12 PMDrums??? Eeeewwwwww! rhouck10-25-2005, 09:31 PMsounds like the thing for me to do is buy a na and do a genII or III swap. other then motor and tranny are there any differences between the na and turbo. ie drums in the back like dsm's or different suspension?

depends on the year. yes the brakes are different but the NA brakes are still plenty respectable (not drums at least  ) selmerguy10-25-2005, 11:08 PMdepends on the year. yes the brakes are different but the NA brakes are still plenty respectable (not drums at least  )
cool so it would be an easy swap between turbo modle brakes and the na brakes. i want a mr2 now!!!!!! f this dsm stuff. one more question i am 6'5" will i fit in one of these bad boys? mymr2turbo10-25-2005, 11:18 PMI'd say it's going to be a tight squeeze, are you a bigger guy? A friend of mine sometimes - but rarely - will ride with me, he's 6' 3 and ~245pds, not fat, just a big guy and it's a little small for him. Tyler10-25-2005, 11:33 PMhey welcom go for a 93 with turbo and lsd selmerguy10-25-2005, 11:57 PMI'd say it's going to be a tight squeeze, are you a bigger guy? i'm 6'5 220, army guy. if i fit in a del sol i should be ok. i hope. some one sell me a running 93 for 4500 right now!!! rhouck10-26-2005, 02:45 AMcool so it would be an easy swap between turbo modle brakes and the na brakes. i want a mr2 now!!!!!! f this dsm stuff. one more question i am 6'5" will i fit in one of these bad boys?

YUP on the brakes, very easy

height... you'll find your head dangerously close the roof :) def get ttops, with the shades out you net a bit of extra room... and worse case you can just take them out and stick your head out the top

and umm gl on your 93 for 4500 quest :) EL PAALO10-30-2005, 10:10 AMget a ttop if you have helmet needs for autox.
I'm only 6'2" and don't fit in a sunroof car (not that they're very common anyway) with a helmet. still haven't gotten a chance to see if I can clear in a hardtop, but I doubt it. I like a pretty upright seating position so that doesn't help, but it's probably similar to your clearance if you sit a little reclined like most folks.

not much reason to get an na 93, imo. the brakes in those is smaller than turbo 93 brakes too, so if you're going budget chassis and doing swap stuff, just get a clean 91 and swap to 93t brakes. if you found a 93t for 5k then that's obviously the car to buy. since you can do your own work, I think the best car for the money will be a 91 shell with a gen 3 engine/tranny and 93 brakes (and master cylinder) and it'll be a much lower mileage engine and more ponies than if you found an already turbo deuce for the same money (unless you find an excellent deal).

st swaybars up front like to rip the frame where they mount underneath and like to rip the endlink mounting point on the strut housing. if you decide you want sways that stiff, reinforce those points.

once you get one, if you need any wheel fitment info, just ask. :) Esoteric10-30-2005, 01:26 PMI had a '91 Turbo T-Top for about a year and I fit fine although nobody believed that I actually could. I'm 6'8" ~250lbs. I have never sat in a hard top or a sunroof car so I can't comment on that. My hair kinda brushed the roof, and a helmet would be completely out of the question at least with stock seating position, but I loved the car, and I can't wait to get my hands on another one. I am definately a _much_ better driver after a year with the car. It went well in snow too (and I had the open diff.)

I say get the car, if you're only 6'5" you'll fit great, it might take a little playing with the seating position, but you will fit. ST bars now (and for a while now) ship with reinforcing plates for the front U-bracket locations. I *highly* recommend ordering a new set of longer bolts (one is short, one is long) to go thru the extra plate. The short bolt barely catches the threads.
