View Full Version : wierd ticking noise?

jon_mr210-21-2005, 04:19 PMi have a wierd ticking noise coming from my engine when the car is reving between 2-3k rpms. when in neutral and like 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. but other than that, engine runs fine. i dont really know what it is, could anyone have any idea what it could be? thanks in advance.

jon turbonatormr210-21-2005, 11:21 PMWhat does the ticking sound like. Does it sound like tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, Or does it sound like click, click, click, click, click, or does it sound like ping,ping,ping,ping,ping.. jon_mr210-22-2005, 12:11 AMi think sounds like a tick... and im pretty sure its not pinging MortICi10-22-2005, 12:28 AMTicking AFAIK, means you have an exhaust leak, but hey what do i know im not a mechanic. But if it sounds what mine sounds like it's def an exhaust leak, try and feal around by the manifold and head, if you feel no air, check your exhaust piping.........

Greg. mymr2turbo10-22-2005, 01:36 AMThe easiest way to see if you have an exhaust leak is run some Sea-Foam through it. That's how I found mine. Plus it won't hurt to give your baby a good internal cleaning.

Steve jon_mr210-22-2005, 03:00 PMthanks guys, ill go try and find that exhaust leak! hopefully it is one ;) Coastal10-22-2005, 05:23 PMHopefully its not a spun bearing... 1qckmr210-23-2005, 02:20 PMThe easiest way to see if you have an exhaust leak is run some Sea-Foam through it. Steve

so does that sea foam stuff really work? notice any difference? Mister2.210-23-2005, 02:34 PMso does that sea foam stuff really work? notice any difference?

Yeah it does, much better idle and throttle response. As goes any engine cleaner there's always a risk on an older engine when using it. Dennis10-24-2005, 01:14 PMit's prolly an exhaust leak, does it do disappear after warming up? check you manifold for loose bolts, if so retorque it.

Dennis :D jon_mr210-24-2005, 10:08 PMyeah, it goes away after warming up... but like comes back around 2-3k rpms in 1st through 3rd gear... so yea. but im still gona check out the exhaust leak, and try used that sea foam stuff.

Dennis :D Mister2.210-25-2005, 03:07 AMSounds like an exhaust leak if it goes away. The exhaust heats up, expands and seals the leak. Once you get up higher in RPM it may put enough pressure back on it to start ticking again. Let us know what you find, beware, seafoam turns your car into a 3000lb smoke bomb. Just Wong It10-25-2005, 06:38 AMyeah i had an exhaust leak on my 91 na it sounded nasty
