View Full Version : Paint Removal Question

LokiRx708-10-2007, 03:56 AMOkay, this is abit tricky,
First off, I own all the basic tools you need to strip paint, to buff and polish paint and so on. However, I have just bought an MR2 (MK1) that is flat black. It used to be Gold, I dont care if there was no clear coat left, or if it was peeling, I can fix that. But I want to know if I can safely try to take the flat black off without damaging my original paint? For that reason I dont want to use any chemicals. But sanding it down with sand paper mean enough to take off a layer of paint could leave me with some badly gouged paint. I dont want to scratch it so much that I cant buff it out because its too deep. If you bodyman Guru's out there have any advice or a miracle cure to my problem, please let me know. This splotchy flat black spray paint is driving me nuts!!
If nothing else I will just shoot it with some gloss black I have sitting around until I can afford to paint it right.
Thanks!
Chris LokiRx708-24-2007, 03:06 PMWell I wet sanded it with 400 grit, and the spray paint came right off. It took me two days to get all the nooks and crannies but I no longer have a flat black car. Well the roof and the engine cover are still black, but I havent gotten around to finishing it just yet. It looks as if there is no clear coat whatsoever. But its not a big deal, I will take faded factory paint over flat black from a rattle can every day of the week. Besides I have alot of body work yet to do with this car.

I was going to buy a thinner or bug and tar remover and cut it with water, but I was to afraid it would remove everything. So I settled on sand paper. I know 400 is a little rough, but it worked great. I will finish the paint off with some even finer paper, and then buff it. It is my daily driver, so I do want it to look halfway decent.
