A quick explanation of the project and it's intent:

I picked up the car in August of 2004 with the intent of using it as a daily driver because my '54 GMC truck was getting to be too nice and was/is taking forever to finish. I got it for a cool $350 cash.

It sat in a lot for about 3 months before I got cracking on it. Got it running and running well, then started to think about the car seriously.

I had a school project coming up that was neccessary for graduation, so I decided that repairing this car would be the project since I was going to do it anyway. Well, one thing led to another and very quickly, repairs, became modifications...

I think it REALLY started after seeing mikoman's AW11 in a thread on here no less. I thought that it was the most amazing MK1 MR2 out there. Well, I slowly began to gather parts and now am in deeper than I had ever thought I would be, btu I love every minute of it.

As I have been building this car, I have watched this board closely and have seen that alot of people don't think that the MK1 MR2 can take home trophies at shows without some serious money in the car, I wanted to prove them wrong also. I want to show AW11 owners what is possible if you are willing.

I've also had alot of people ask me why I went "the rice route" and only modified the exterior. This is a very good question, but one the is very simply and easily answered:
This is what I wanted. If I had gone to another area of the car, it would be unlike anything that people had ever seen. If I built the suspension, the car would match the handling of a Lotus Elise or come dam close to it. If I built it for horsepower, I'd have built an MK1.5 so powerful that it would scare anyone whoe opened it up.

I instead chose to modify the exterior and do many of the "basics" because Not too many MK1 owners are into that kind of thing, which leaves me alot of room to be different in my own reguard. Performance mods are planned for the car, but not for some time down the road.

I truly believe that my car will be a stand out in the MR2 community because of what was done to it. I believe that it will be a standout in the car community because of how clean it will be when finished...

So what do I ahve up my sleeve for the car?

Well, the body kit will have no visible gap from the fenders to the kit. It will not be a one pieced car. I have a few small tricks for how this will be done and may post up on how its done if I get the chance.

The engine bay will see some shiny bits in a few months with the addition of powedercoated valve covers, a powdercoated intake manifold, and several billet aluminum pieces straight from the Hot-Rod and Musclecar scene.

The interior will be showing very simple and subtle change with the exception of the icebox which will replace the inside of the glovebox. The seats will eb redyed and several billet aluminum accents and pieces will adorn the interior, adding character and a little color to the otherwise "bland" space.

I also have one awesome stereo in the works. It's not going to be some "big-pimpin-in-my-Escalade-so-loud-that-it-shakes-the-car-apart" stereo. I'm going for absolute quality in every component I purchase. Companies such as JL Audio, Alpine, and BOSE are names that I will let you think about.

In the future, look for more aluminum pieces everywhere and several one-off pieces that will truly set this car apart from ANY other MK1 out there.

Matt Tyler10-18-2005, 08:21 AMi never thought id like it but it look very good tigerpee10-27-2005, 04:32 PMWhats our budget on this car? Coastal10-27-2005, 05:33 PMIts coming along nicely

Props to you Significant10-27-2005, 08:21 PMmy god... the wheel wells are so clean looking... blazinmr210-27-2005, 10:17 PMLooks like things are coming along good, I like that you are taking some things from the hotrod/muscle car scene as well. AceX10-28-2005, 02:02 AMThanks for the comments guys. Tommorrow, I am going to finish all the work ont he body kit as far as my end is concerned, and by sunday, my goal is to have it fully fitted and mouted to the car. I will be going to work all three days also, which wil seriously cut into my time, but I know that my dad and I can do it.

I also picked up a new rim since one of them was messed up pretty bad from someone dropping on its face on the pavement, so now I'm going to have a full size spare tire as well. Another thing I picked up this week is 2 JL Audio 6W0 subs. Cost me almost $200 for these tiny little subs, but I have heard them in action, and I would not want anything else. In about two more weeks, I am going to be getting the amp to power them which is another $450 out of my pocket, and then a head unit which will probably run me another $300. Its alot of money to be putting out, but You get what you pay for, and I am a firm believer in high quality. Mister2.210-28-2005, 02:07 AMLookin good, cant wait to see a finished product. You should hold off on revealing anymore until it's fully done. :) AceX10-28-2005, 04:04 PMI'll post pics of primer then? Tyler10-28-2005, 04:16 PMi wanna see primer:) AceX10-28-2005, 08:26 PMThen primer you shall have.

I was just finishing up the last of my fiberglassing (man do I suck at that...) and got a genius idea for the car that will make it even more unique. It's straight out of the SUV and truck scene, but is paying tribute to the old school Muscle cars. Not going to say what it is, but if I do it, it will be bad ass and I guarantee people will stare for a long time... Mister2.210-28-2005, 08:50 PMAir brushed nkd woman on the hood, right? Mister-Twoster10-28-2005, 09:05 PMEverything is looking great! Cant wait to see the finished outcome :D

Keep on keepin on. DrPaine11-02-2005, 08:29 PMThats a pretty hot car man, cant wait to see it comin along. AceX11-02-2005, 08:34 PMAir brushed nkd woman on the hood, right?

And then drive right next to the elementary school down the street... :D

I sat down with my FG guy on monday and we hashed out a plan for the car and angineered some of the thigns that are going to happen with it. I promise not to dissapoint.

Right now (literally) the car is idling in an effort to bring the gas tank down to emptiness and then add some cleaners to the fuel system to help get all the carbon crud out of the engine. EL PAALO11-02-2005, 10:50 PMcool project.
all the custom work she's getting calls for someting better than cdr9's though. ;) AceX11-02-2005, 11:50 PMhaha, yeah, but I like my wheels. Plus I now have 5 of them, so I'm going to have a full size spare tire =)

I'm also looking at the possiblity of CF fender flares.

I may get new wheels in a year or so, but for now, the CDR 9's will do just fine. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
