91-93 tail lights
or
94+ tail lights

Others, such as Rev6 tail lights or other tail lights.
I know that most would prefer the 94+ tails, but i like the look of the 91-93 tails. Tearstone04-17-2007, 12:23 PMConsidering the cost to upgrade to the 94+ tails, the 91s function just fine. I don't care, it came with the car :) auto04-17-2007, 12:35 PMI lovethe 94+ tails. Yea, i really like the look of the 91/94 combo. Quick question, i always wondered...where would the reverse lights go? RePete04-17-2007, 08:53 PMI had the '94s installed just last week with the body colored center panel, my old ones were cloud city so I simply gave them away no charge.
Beautiful! I love the new ones. What I admire about them are two things: they update the car to the present and they add even more elegance and class to an already awesome design. :)
I did notice one not so good thing, the reverse lights aren't as powerful or disperse light as well as the old design - something that comes in handy in a darkened garage w/ close tolerances. hmong33704-17-2007, 09:09 PMAdd A Poll (As You Know, 97% Will Be In Favor Of 94+). I Say Keep The 91's!

Zenki, Kuki, it dont matter they are both sexy!!!! monopolizedinc04-18-2007, 11:21 AM94+ with the 90-93 center ;) phzoinkMKII04-23-2007, 04:38 PMI prefer the 91-93. Luni04-23-2007, 05:04 PMI like the 91/93 with the 94 center better than the 94s with the 91 center.

I have an awesome RX-8 but It only gets 16MPG. I am new here so please do not flame. I will just come out and say I do not know much about the car but I am wanting to put it back to showroom condition. How hard is it to put '94 "style" tail lights in my 93? Will they just bolt on with a new center garnish plate? What about the lock? Can you set up your trunk for remote release? And where do I get a center garnish that I can paint that will work with the lights? Thanks for your help. Davis05-09-2007, 09:34 PMhttp://mr2.noegruts.com/t-lights/t-lights.htm Here's a link to how to convert 91' to 94' tails, there's pictures to, so that will help a bunch.:) Gairloch05-09-2007, 10:10 PMWhat about the lock? There is a truck release switch inside the car. It's just behind the B-pillar on the driver's side below the quarter window. tksmr205-24-2007, 11:45 AMI like the 91/93 with the 94 center better than the 94s with the 91 center.

They are brighter in my opinion than the stock lights as well.

More pics and video on our website. Matt33ttam06-17-2007, 07:09 PMI went with black Altezza lights and tinted them to match my windows and the fact I want to eventually paint my car black.
That is exactly the look I am going for. Is that the same center piece I ordered from you? And how did you tint the lights? Were you able to tint them from the inside? Did you spray tint them? I am not sure if the Altezza lights can be taken apart. My Altezza set is here already and so is my lock cylinder. Just waiting on my big box to come across the pond with my spoiler and center piece.
I actually am a big fan of the 93 tails that are on my car. I just hate the stock "honeycomb" center piece on the 93's. I just cannot stand the look of the 94+ tails nor the rectangle cut outs for the reverse lights. I think the car shoud be a lot cleaner in the back.

Thats a stock 94+ center piece, I just tinted the reverse lights to match the panel. If you look super close you can see the reverse lights, they are a tad lighter by design.
No I could not take apart my tail lights, so you have to tint them from the outside.
You also MUST reseal the edges all the way around the tail light lense or water will get inside, I used black silicone for this.
I tinted them with VHT Niteshades, LIGHT coat after LIGHT coat, doing all parts at the same time to make sure I got even tinting. VHT Niteshades runs VERY EASILY. I slightly warmed the lights to make the VHT dry a little faster, but not much, BARELY warm to the touch - just used a hair dryer for a few seconds right before spraying - NOT to dry it afterwards...
After I got the desired tinting I used a can of Krylon clear and used the entire can on the lights, it was on the order of 4 coats. I thought about buffing them but they actually turned out pretty darn smooth so I decided not to mess with it.
There are other pics and videos on the website and also older pics on carpron (search for jeremy mr2) if you want more looks.
I spent little over 3 days doing the lights. I was pretty meticulous....
Also I recommend checking fitment as I had to file a few edges on the backs of the lights to get it to fit flush. Also I painted the backs black as they come silver and it is easily seem between the cracks. Matt33ttam06-17-2007, 08:03 PMTake a look at this Before and After: I kind of like the after look. And to whoever's GREAT car this is...sorry for the Photohacked "After" version. It was just an eay one modify.

As I've posted just recently, the '93 tails are superior in the amount of light they throw and where they throw it. I noticed a big change (for the worse) when I had the '94 conversion kit installed, the new reverse lights are just OK in the function department.
Hmmm, you're pic looks familiar...

sweet you used my car as an example.
Im a big fan of that look too. as for the reverse lights, you can a) drill in some led's B) attach a light under the bumper, or C) dont use them
I chose not to use them only because i havent gotten around to it yet.

The design flows better. I always confuse Gen3 Camry back lights with the 91-93 MR2 lights.
From far away, I'm always like, "Oooooh an MR2." Then I get up closer and it's a freakin Camry.
I don't know about you guys, but I don't want the back of my 2 being confused with a Camry. Thankfully the Gen 3.5 Camrys changed the MR2 look-a-like rear lights. megadivers07-22-2007, 10:12 PMNewbie question here....How did you mate the early panel with the 94 lights? The early is square and the later panel is rounded.... Did you get the dremel out and start carving? Davis07-22-2007, 11:42 PM^Yep you have to dremel it. :) mr2willwin07-23-2007, 02:34 PMMy car is white, I just bought some 94+ tails, the center is coming in black, should I put it on until I can paint the car? or paint it white?
My vote is for 94+, depending on the style the car has gone, I like both center panels. I personally will go with the 94+ panel. Mr2crazybyong07-29-2007, 09:29 AM94+ ftw! but my old tails grew on me after i tinted it all red for a cleaner look.. but still gonna get the 94s in the future :) ..

no reverse lights? does it fit w.o mods? datguydeni03-13-2010, 12:57 AMwhat does? if you mean to put the entire 94+ tail light assembly on to any pre-94 then you would need to make room for the reverse lights in the center panel. Most of this seems like just an excuses to keep 91 tails. There are far more MR2's with 91-93 tails than 94+, regardless of what pictures show, so 91 tails are not more "rare."
Anyone calling 94+ tails "rice" needs to grow up and jump OFF the "rice" bandwagon. I hate that term. People throw it around all the time, calling anything they don't want to do, can't afford, or don't like "rice." Saying one is rice for converting their 91-93 to 94+ tails soon after purchase is another gross exaggeration.
That said, I can respect the reasoning of one less thing to send money on, and wanting to keep a stock MR2. Each car person is a little different, and not everyone wants to spend money on the same thing. What's good for one person might not be good for another. tadamany04-02-2010, 11:27 AM^ Eckoman, I didn't say 94+ tail lights were rice, DID I? Actually I said the opposite. not that the '94 is rice, but swapping out the tail lights is the first thing a ricer does. You never see a rice MR2 with '91 tail lights. EVER
I'll explain what I didn't like, but after this let's take it to PM land. We don't need to clutter up the thread :)
I hate the word rice, and I hate it when people make generalized assumptions like "You never see a rice MR2 with '91 tail lights. EVER"
I also didn't like that "not that the '94 is rice, but swapping out the tail lights is the first thing a ricer does." It implies that someone is rice for swapping in 94 tails soon after they get an MR2, which I think is wrong. (For the record, I still have 91-93 tails).

I just bought a set of 94+ tails but got the Japan spec so the corner lights are not drilled and I'm gonna leave it that way so the corners are not functional. Also ordered the MR2 logo light kit from Ben in white/red and he's making the circuit work that while in reverse the MR2 logo will light up in white, otherwise the logo will be red.
So there you have it, 94+ tails with the 91 center panel AND working reverse lights. :D beachbum09-03-2010, 08:29 PMI'm about to go 94/91 hybrid myself but wanted a reverse light so here's what I did.

:( No I don't, I realized that since my rear end is busted up some (last owner got rear ended twice) the old tails actually bent with the body, so the new tails don't fit. Yeah, the Tom's louvers on the 91-92 look straight out the 80's. They really cheapen the look of the car. The 93-95 Tom's center piece (T020) looks much better than the 91-92 piece does. Actually, if the car is ready by Friday I'll be taking her to Spring Fling and I'll have a bunch of pics to post up.
As far as projects, lord knows I have plenty for this giirl and my other "pet". This is what I have ready in my garage for the MR2:
1.) 94+ tails with light-up MR2 logo
2.) Tien Springs
3.) Dual Tom's style scoops
4.) SS Fuze Box cover
Once I'm done all that, I'm starting work on my pet (94 Civic Hatch), going to do a simple swap to a B-series, first one I get my hands on. I don't care if it's a B18B, C1, C5 or a B16, as long as it's better then my D15 rated at 100 BHP.
Once the Civic is swapped, I'll use her as my daily driver so I can start yanking out the 5SFE from the deuce and get her ready for a Redtop Beams swap.
I should be done with all of this by the time I'm ready to retire? eckoman_pdx05-10-2011, 07:02 PMActually, if the car is ready by Friday I'll be taking her to Spring Fling and I'll have a bunch of pics to post up.

Yeah, it's definitely a DA Chassis Integra. I did see it on a DC Chassis Integra once back in 2002 or so. a DC Integra which was featured on the covor of Import Tuner had 94+ MR2 taillight on it. Such a waste of nice taillights... devious05-27-2011, 05:07 PMI remember that DC2 I still have the magazine (It was Super Street not Import Tuner) anyway in my eyes even if you dont like it you have to respect all the work and labor that some people put into their cars even if it looks like a shit box they might have paid alot of money or took a long time to get it looking like that. I have seen alot of cars that I think they could have done something better but I still give respect for the hard work and money spent to modify a car how they want it. For some of the OG's out there reading this you should remember the trend of using 93-98 Supra tails on everything I even have a magazine with a CRX with Supra tails. Some people modify their cars how they can picture it thier heads while others follow the trends(Cookie Cuters) is what I call those people. The DC2 I was thinking of WAS in Import Tuner, on the cover. I didn't mess up and get it confused with Super Street. It was Import Tuner. It's owned by Nilo Capiz, and it was a cover car.
In fact, it's been in Import Tuner twice.

I've been in the scene a LONG time. I showed and won at HIN, and all the other shows. I was there during the "headlight and taillight conversion" phase. It wasn't just supra tails, it was GT-R tails, Mercedes-Benz tails, BMW headlights, and tons of others. I've seen them all on cars. Shows, magazines, it was huge back 10 years ago in 2002.
The taillight conversions got played out, just like Lambo doors and some of the other mods people used to do. People when for all shock and awe, and it wasn't always done clean.
Sometimes it didn't look that bad though, and it doesn't look too bad on that white DA Integra. The reason I said it's a shame the tails were wasted on that car, is I know first had no one in that few Honda scene will respect a car like that. It's a shame, but it's true. If it's not some cookie cutter JDM inspired Civic rocking 15 or 16" wheels, the Honda guys just hate. If it's a car that would win @ a show, they'll hate on it. My Civic would still clean most of their clocks @ any show still...but that doesn't mean they won't hate on it. As for the work that goes into that conversion like that, I'll always respect that. I'm a show guy @ heart, and I'm still good friend's with the owner of a custom body shop. It's just to most of the people in the car scene, conversions are dead...so it's a waste in that sense as you'll never get the respect you were hoping for. I actually miss that scene. Lot's of creativity, and people didn't hate on you for braking out of the norm. That scene's long gone though, like HIN...
At any rate, here's a CRX which was a Honda Tuning Cover car back in the day (Ironic, since they'd make fun of it now). RSX Headlights, Mercedes-Benz tails.
