View Full Version : Time to reveal the Twin Turbo build costs so far

Node09-20-2005, 11:48 PMGT3400 Costs so far

Keep in mind all fabrication and assembly was done by myself so more costs are implied. Im attempting to list only the minimum components that I feel are required to get just the engine installed if you already have a blown 3s. Keep in mind I cut corners EVERYWHERE and there is a lot that still isn't the way I want it. There are also a few components I already had so I have not included them in the costs. For example the new turbo pressure plate and disk. Prices rounded up.

5VZ-FE Engine $750
5VZ-FE Supercharged ECU, coils and MAF $300
DSM turbo flanges $50
Manifold pipes $100
Turbos pair $160
Intercooler pipe ~$18
Header pipe thermal wrap (optional) $32
Materials for motor mount and axel mount (flux core wire and 3/8" plate) $8
IC $Free
IC fans $Free
IC temp sensor $8
Coolent bleed/drain cock $3
Temp Oil Voltage Guages $19
Fittings/lines for turbo feed and drain $30
Coolent hoses and filler tee $110
Coolent refill $14
Oil $12
Exhaust fab $120
1mz Stock flywheel $30

Total DIY cost for my turbo engine install so far $1764
Total DIY cost of a 5VZ-FE NA install w/o turbos $1366

To help with estimating labor for the mechanically inept.

Exhaust fabrication 2 hrs
Axel Carrier Fab 1 hr
Motor mount 5 hrs
Stock motor pull 4 hrs
Pull tranny from motor & remove clutch and pp 1hr
Pull V6 flywheel and install 1mz or 3vz wheel 1hr
Install ppl, clutch, cut spacer plate and bolt up tranny 4hrs
Lower engine into bay 2 hrs
Bolt up engine to stock mounts 1-2 hrs
custom cut coolent lines and fab filler T 5 hrs
Electrical system (Lots of work here) 15 hrs
Fuel hookup and return .5 hrs
Cut coolent outlet and install bleed valve 3 hrs
Re installing axels and bolting hubs back up 3 hrs.
Swapping crank pullies 10 min to 2 hrs depending on the tools you have.
Getting pissed off and having to redo something 10 hrs

So, it could be possible to do the NA swap in about 61 hrs. canadam09-20-2005, 11:55 PMNow thats impressive. Node09-21-2005, 12:08 AMOh yea, Prices are in USD.

Another thing to keep in mind, I spent about 9 months sourceing these parts. Expect to pay quite a bit more if your looking to buy all your parts at once. I have seen full rolled 5vz-fe trucks selling for around $900 so there is the possibility of sourcing practically everything in one shot for less than I have spent.

Oh yea forgot to include tranny oil $5 and a new longer alternator belt so you can use the MR2 alternator $8

Good luck guys. Mister2.209-21-2005, 10:32 AMWhy the 5VZ over the 1MZ again? canadam09-21-2005, 09:17 PMA TT 1MZ is an idea I've been tossing around in my noggin. I wouldn't mind using a couple stock 3SGTE Turbos, as they're readily available.

Its the header fab that scares me...

Boost and revs. The stock VZ engines can handle a LOT more boost than the MZ can before upgrades. The 5VZ with a few easy (About $240 in parts) mods is mechanically capable of revs as high as a 3s-gte. In conjunction with an EMS this engine should be better in many ways and for a lot less money.

Now that I have completed phase 1 of my project I will be spending some time working on the body and suspension of the car. Once I get the body looking very good, I will move on to the suspension. I plan to modify the front hubs to improve the scrub radius. Right now the front wide body wheels are just not improving the grip at all over stock.

Phase 2 will entail an upgraded oil pump, valve springs, pistons,Full EMS, TDO6 turbos or a large single turbo, new cutom manifolds and metal IC pipe all the way to the intake. I will also be building a custom oil pan or switching to the 2WD pan from a T100 so I can lower the car more.

My goal by the end of next year is 400 BHP without NO2. From what I have seen people getting from 9 psi on a non intercooled supercharged UNOPENED engine (300hp.350ftlbs) I think that is a very attainable goal. anothermr2guy09-23-2005, 02:09 PMIsn't the 5vz an iron block vs the 1mz aluminum? How much more does it weigh? (not including all your turbo hardware) I love the way the car handles and prefer to keep the overall balance even if it means sacrificing peak hp capability. Any idea of the difference? Node09-24-2005, 11:34 AMThe difference of the 5VZ-FE VS the 3S-GTE is right around 90 lbs. I know I could have gone with the MZ alloy block but for the power levels im obviously headed for I think the iron block is a better choice. Weasy2k10-02-2005, 01:08 AMNode what parts are needed to upgrade the revs on these engines...i know the oil pump sucks and i found aplace that sells high flow pumps...i am wondering if the rods will handle the revs at all or not...

next thing to look at is the valve springs...

hrmm...more research... Node10-02-2005, 11:13 AMMore research is not required :) I have done the work for you. The rods are very strong and it looks to my machinest and I that they are very similar to the 3S-GTE rods. They wont spin quite as high as the 3s rods are capable of but high 7's would definatly be safe. You are correct about the oil pump. The engine needs both more pressure and flow at those rpm's.

As for upgraded valve springs, I have already sourced several different springs that will work. You dont need too much more pressure. If you want more info on these send me an email since i dont want the entire world to know this info (would make my costs go up). Weasy2k10-02-2005, 06:54 PMive tried to email you before but i havent got a reply yet :(

fire me one at johnny@sea2skytuning.com

I sent it to your sales email addy before. Brad Bedell10-05-2005, 11:52 PMHow much time in research and planning? If you're billing a customer, it must also be included in the estimate. True so true. I guess I should also include some R&D time for some of the things that didnt work too  Nice to see you here though Brad. What are you driving now BTW?

Weasy: I attempted to email you some info on the upgraded valve springs and pistons but my computer at work blew up :wtf: Anyway Ill get that info to you very soon. Ahh got one of those self-emploding computer eh....right on....

FIre away the info when you got the time....for now i am going to fill my trucks s/c with oil.....a nasty sounding s/c that one is... ixtlann12-01-2007, 12:16 AMi was tossing the name gt340 around just this morning.. ooh and btw thread back alive from:lol: the dead!!!! Oteck12-01-2007, 03:51 PMdoes node still hang around here? i remember he still owes weasy some parts. now i hear nothing from the guy Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc.
