View Full Version : How to protect new paint?

Mr2crazybyong04-10-2007, 10:07 PMHi guys!
my car is about to be painted, but im afraid after a month it will look dull.. how can i protect it from swirls, water marks and keep it shiny? also, can car covers create swirls or fine scratches? Thanks guys.. mr2silvertop04-10-2007, 10:35 PMdo not use conventional wax for at least 3 months after as this will do all of those find polishes that are labeled paintable b/c these do not contain silicates try not to get armor all or tire shine on it don't park under trees yes many car covers do leave scratches find one that uses a satin liner inside will cost more but worth it do not use anything but water to wash with b/c other may cause the paint to age prematurely always try to dry w/ a soft towel so as to not leave water marks the reason i say all of this is b/c paint does not actually cure for about 3 months depending on it is baked or dried it feels dry to the touch w/i hours but it isnt cured to the core until that point this should help the shine of your vehicle last TomsMR204-10-2007, 10:49 PMif you buff the paint, it'll cure a little faster.. so ive heard.

you could use the crappiest paint on the market and it wouldnt fade in a month, or two, or 6. anything decent isnt going to fade for literally years. mr2silvertop04-10-2007, 11:00 PMwell curing has to do with the hardening of the clear coat if the whole car is painted then unless their just idiotic it will be done w/ a slow (low temp) clear so it will not dry spray unless you take it to maaco or somewhere else like that they will buff it after paint no matter what to make it have that wet look but say they spray a coat of clear let it sit for 20 min. then spray another coat let it sit pass its flash point then the finish will come out dull also if it is buffed too soon it will have this dulling affect or it is buffed and a polishing glaze is not used after it tends look dull but that is an easy fix to sum it up buffing is basically like sanding with a super fine grit it just takes some of the top layer off to make it smoother to remove dry spray(orange peel) or trash its not going to do anything chemically as clear is a chemical mixture using a hardener and a clear substance these are combined before spraying when they are combined a reaction begins this can not be accelerated by removeing a layer and there for it is subject to other chemical interference before it has fully reacted Mr2crazybyong04-12-2007, 12:15 AMok, so no conventional wax for atleast 3 months just paintable polishes, satin inside liner car cover, wash with only water.. got it. but i find it hard to wash cars with only water, its hard to remove greasy stuff and especilly dust that are stuck on it, i usually use soap power for washing clothes, is this bad? car shampoos to me are just like washing with only water... MR2TRD104-12-2007, 01:15 AMGeez I got a headache reading that super long sentence. I waxed my paint within a month of getting my car back. It didn't hurt the paint at all. Who ever paints your car will most likely buff it the day after they paint it to remove imperfections from their application or prep.

Also..never use Dawn or other household soaps...especially detergent for clothing. The best thing to use is some sort of car wash like Meguiars. Dawn and the like strip away the finish and eventually the wax whenever you apply your first coat. Mr2crazybyong04-12-2007, 01:28 AMGeez I got a headache reading that super long sentence.

hehe, yeah me too... ok ill try that.. i guess the paint will cure faster here because the weather here is HOT all day! thanks guys! by the way, any way of getting water marks from the glass off? PHOENIX04-12-2007, 07:46 AMuse a steel wool pad (not an sos pad with the detergent in it) to clean your windows (not on the inside though, just the outside). It works great. Be sure to dry your windows before the water dries so you don't get the water marks on the windows. microfiber towels work great in this situation, but they get wet pretty fast so you gotta have a lot of them.

on the paint thing. Be sure to buy one of those furry wash cloths and only use a microfiber towel or shammy cloth to dry your car when you are done washing it. you want the paint to breath, so don't use anything on the paint for about 90 days. Mr2crazybyong04-12-2007, 11:57 AMok thanks Phoenix, i tried using rubbing compound on the windshield of my pajero this afternoon, and it also works.. gonna try the steel wool thing, but will it not scratch the glass, is it soft enough? what do you put on the wool, water or just use it dry? oh, and do you know how to remove scratches on the glass? thanks again... mr2silvertop04-12-2007, 06:17 PMbuffer if its not too deep PHOENIX04-12-2007, 06:21 PMno, the steel wool is fine to use on the window and will not scratch it. I always used a constant flow of water when doing it. This little trick i actually learned when working in a body shop.

As far as the scratches in your windshield, you screwed on those, i know of no way to fix those. How much are windshields in the philippines because in the states, they run about $200 bucks installed (not factory).

Dude, i am seriously gonna fly out and check out your car when you are done. I just checked prices and its cheap as hell for me to fly over there and back from japan. Mr2crazybyong04-17-2007, 12:34 PMhey that would be cool! how much is a one-way ticket? i wanna explore japan too.. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc.
