View Full Version : S2K push to start button install

MR2TRD109-07-2005, 08:52 PMI've searched...no one has a good write up. I basically need to know what to wire up and where to place the relay. The switch is going in the cigarette lighter. Now I can put "I heart Honda" stickers on my MR2.. :D canadam09-07-2005, 10:09 PMGood question, I've always thought this looks neat in that spot - the lighter looks out of place. GF309-08-2005, 05:18 PMCan't you buy an after market push button start up kit??? I would assume they have directions.. Look for a universal start up kit man... I think that would be easier then trying to figure it out on your own... G3aR10-09-2005, 06:56 AMthe wiring diagrams should easily tell you what wires you need to splice to get the button to work. thats the next mod on my car when iget it running. the wiring takes about 20 mins, the button takes about 30 mins. then to make everything look perfect takes another 20 mins or or. factor in time to drink beer and bullshit around with your buddies, should be an afternoon affair. and when you go street racing all the honda boyz will be saying "that's jDm TigHit y0!!!" turboguy10-15-2005, 03:41 PMThis install is really easy. Just 2 wires to work or 3 wires to make the "engine start" on the button light up when the clutch is pressed (with key in run position) A relay is just wasted time for the install on the MKII mainly because the wires being tapped into are on the "coil" side of the starter relay, meaning that the amperes running through the switch are far less than what the switch is rated for. If you want a relay for peace of mind, have at it.

Below is a scematic of the button: (NOTE: these instructions are for the genuine Honda S2000 button only)

Remember to disconnect your battery before any electrical work. This is done easier if you take the switch out of the car before modifing it. The switch is located on the back of the ignition cylinder. One screw removes the switch portion from the cylinder, and 2 small screws remove the "key in" buzzer switch from the neck of the ingition cylinder.

The "ground" wire is only used if you want the "engine start" to light up on the button when the clutch is depressed. This wire is connected to chassis ground.

The "ignition" wire is connected to a +12 volt source when the key is turned to "run", (not accessory) On the back side of your OEM ignition switch, this is labled "IG2". connect the "ignition" wire to the wire between the switch and connector coming from the IG2 designation on the switch side. You are tapping into this wire, not cutting it.

The "output" wire is connected to the wire that only sees +12v when the key is in the "start" position. This wire will be cut. Cut the wire coming from the "ST2" designation on the back of the switch. Attach the "output" wire to the side of the wire on the vehicle connector (not the switch side) The switch side needs to be sealed to avoid making contact with any other metal under the dash. (you can use heatshrink tubing for this)

Now, make sure your electrical connections are good and tight and sealed. Turn the key to "run", press the clutch, press the button, and it should start.

I hope that helps a little.

***DISCLAIMER***
This is how I wired my button in my deuce and have had no problems whatsoever in 3 years. If in the strange occurence that something may happen, I am not responsible. Remember, you are modifying your factory wiring. If you read what I have written below and still have no idea how to do it, get someone that does. MR2TRD110-17-2005, 04:12 PMawesome...I'm going to attempt this Saturday! SpeedballTrix10-18-2005, 04:33 PMNice writeup turboguy.
