View Full Version : Common oil leak sources

mymr2turbo08-23-2005, 06:30 PMAs the title says, where should I look for oil leak sources?! I have noticed the last couple days there is some oil from under the car. I hope its nothing too serious. SKYMR208-23-2005, 08:26 PMdistributor, cam seal, valve cover, oilpan, oilcooler. mymr2turbo08-23-2005, 10:25 PMnow here is a stupid question, ppl may call it. how exactly does the distributor leak oil? I've always been in to cars and ppl have always looked up to me, assuming I know alot about cars. well I do, to an extend. when it comes to basic motor knowledge, i sorta know till it comes down to detail. I want to learn more and the sw20 is my dream car, so of course I want to learn as much as I can. So would someone be kind enough to give me a hand or link me some where.

Another question is, my car came with the Tein HA coilovers. so far I have left them to the setting which the previous owner set. my question is, how do you know what the right specs are, to me I could be on a course and I'd think they are good but to someone with more knowledge could think total opposite. I think the car has a little excessive wheel gap so I want to change that. Not a honda bump-stop ridding low but to give it a more aggresive edge while maintaining their full purpose, functionality.

I'm sure ppl on here are like, WTF?? you stupid wannabe/ricer but hey, at least I'm taking the time to gain knowledge instead of pretending I know my stuff. Or I could go to pep-boys, grab me some blue lookin' bulbs and a sexy aluminum non-functional wing and call it a day!! think of it that way if you will.

Steve canadam08-23-2005, 10:30 PMNoone's going to think that of you here. When the dist. o-ring wears out, it usually starts to leak oil, I believe.

Someone else may be able to answer your suspension question. SKYMR208-23-2005, 11:19 PMok you mean SPEC as in the shockrate or the ride height... mymr2turbo08-24-2005, 12:11 AMyeah, like what is a good spring rate and the damping adjustment. I want to be able to adjust them and actually know whether what I did was good or not instead of just guessing. SKYMR208-24-2005, 01:12 AMthe spring rate are preset.. you can only adjust the damping rate i believe... i never havea tein HA before but i on't believe it damper adjustable.. only height and fron camber .. correct me if i'am wrong some one rhouck08-24-2005, 10:10 AMyou are wrong. they are 16 way damper adjustable. play around with settings and decide what feels best to you.

I assume you know how to adjust the height. technically you should use them to corner weight your car, but in reality 99% of people will just set them to a height that looks good (and doesn't rub) mymr2turbo08-26-2005, 02:18 PMI'm going to corner-weigh the car pretty soon, a friend of mine can do it for me.....he races cars so he knows what he's doing. I'm in the ATL area and was wondering who do you guys recommend to service my car? I'm in need to change my timing belt and the dealership wants 43$ for the part and 599$ for the labor. To me that seems a little high but that could just be me.

steve rhouck08-26-2005, 06:01 PMI recommend you to service it because it really isn't that hard :)

Regardless that does sound high, my local dealership was recently charging in the $250 range for labor on a timing belt (special rate, regular was in the 300s) mymr2turbo08-26-2005, 11:35 PMI wouldn't mind doing it myself but I dont have the right tools to do it plus I'd be nervous of doing something wrong since I've never done it before. I also thought that was really high since I just got it done on my mom's solara about ~2 months ago and it was only 200$ for everything. Stupid stealerships. Would someone be interested in helping me change mine if I pay them?

Steve canadam08-26-2005, 11:45 PMAsk the dealership how many hours they're charging you for labour, and compare it to what other people are being charged. It does seem slightly high, whats the labour rate there ? $70ish ? mymr2turbo08-28-2005, 12:14 AMI'll try and give them a call on Monday to find all that info. They tried giving me the excuse, "It's turbo'd so we're more then likely going to have to pull the motor" bullshit. It's a dealership. I know how they get away with scams. My auto-teacher used to work for Alan Vigil Ford in Fayetteville and he'd tell us all these stories. For ex. He got assigned to change out a motor mount on a Navigator. The book states it takes 5-hrs worth the labor at 90 an hour. He had that changed in 45 mins. but they still charged the lady for the full 5-hrs. Isn't that some bullshit. Ever since he told me all those stories I'm a little "iffy" when it's time to get anything done. That's just my two-cents though.

70 is the going rate for mechanics these days...its crazy! gobluetwo09-21-2005, 04:27 PMknow, though, that the mechanic doesn't earn $70. the dealership CHARGES $70/hour for labor and only a fraction of that goes to the mechanic. i wish my uncle, a mechanic who owns his own shop in denver and the prev owner of my car, lived in atlanta :( mymr2turbo09-21-2005, 11:26 PMmy auto teacher used to work for a Ford dealership and he'd tell us stories how the business usually works. Here's a story I'll share.

A women had came in with her Navigator that needed a motor mount replaced. They told her it would take a little over 5 hours - according to the service manual - for labor at a rate of 90$....that's alot. So my teacher working there at the time, and happen to know a shortcut to get it done within 45 minutes but because the service manual stated 5 hours of time, they still charged her the full amount. Isn't that messed up?

After he told me that, I haven't been to a dealership since. I've just learned to do the work myself. Just not the timing belt. I talked to tracy at BATLground and he stated it'd be around 350-400 for the work which is hella better then 700 from the dealership. The only thing is though, they have a stupid waiting list.

So anyone willing to help out a fellow deuce owner? I'll pay you for the help and all, just don't expect 700. sorry. I'm also wanting to do it myself, not just for the money, but so I can see how to do it and just have the knowledge. I'm always in the mood to learn something.

steve canadam09-21-2005, 11:40 PMI think its fair. If the woman agreed to a flat rate charge, which the book calls for 5 hours, that's what she should pay.

You're not going to tell us the story one more time and make it a hat-trick though, are you ? Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
