View Full Version : Looking for a Header for the RedTop
doggyDCW12-16-2006, 05:48 PMI know what few companies produced them - and i do know what one SSIII Owner in Cyprus got a header from Japan from company i think called Pheonix Power or somthing like this... I know what few of you RedTop owner are located in Japan or somthere near Japan (or maybe you have access to the parts) and if some one would be wiling to help me - i would really really apreciate what.
Cuz shipping to EU from Japan would kill not only mentioning Customs fee's + VAT...
Or atleast some one could point me to the right direction where to look for a header - it would be a huge help.
Thanks guys. puretone12-17-2006, 04:55 AM5SFE header should fit....the bolts/ports all are in the same place, i eyeballed it in the passed and they look 100% the same, just that the 5SFE had heavy cast iron unit while newer 3SGE/5SFE all had nice 4-2-1 bits....
BTW 3SFE would work as well....
I have a precise drawing of the exhaust flage so you could potentially make your own header from some sick 316 stainless steel like i have in the past for my turbo project....in fact im thinking of doing it again.... PHOENIX12-17-2006, 08:07 AMum, i don't think they do fit.
If the 5sfe header will fit on a beams, that means the 3SGTE header from a 91 - 93 will fit the Beams, and our problems for a Turbo Header for our engines are over. From all the research that everyone has done, I think we all came to the conclusion that the bolt patterns are off. doggyDCW12-17-2006, 12:06 PMI dont even think 5SFE header would work on the beams... Cuz 5SFE will produce less of the gas flow when the 3SGE will - and this might be Downgrade not Upgrade going with the 5S or even 3SFE header... I would not go with the 3SGE header either - cuz still these engines are different - not to mention gas flow and etc..

This corporation rammer foot is not the sufficient rammer foot which connects to the muffler simply from the head section, we are designed to be the structure which can be called the true rammer foot.

the 5S-FE headers will only work on rev1 and rev2 3S-GE equipped MR2's.
even on the rev3 onwards the 5S-FE will not work
there are quite a few headers available for the beams.

hey the BEAMS exhaust gasket & 5SFE exhaust gaskets are all the same thing, which would mean they header flanges MUST be the same, so getting the newer gen 5SFE headers (those 4-2-1 deals) should do just fine....
i just verified this at the toyota dealer here where 5SFE camrys & celicas have the same part number as the 3SFE Rav4 and compared to the ST202/BEAMS model....just make sure you get the 4-2-1 header instead of the cast-iron log part that older gen OEMs come with.... mr220v12-19-2006, 10:08 AMOr I could get by with my 4-1 style header for a while, but thats good news. doggyDCW12-19-2006, 02:33 PMWhats the point of upgrading Beams header to a 5SFE header??? Whats the advantage?? 5SFE has a FE head design - witch has smaller valves, smaller intake / exhaust entrys / exits, smaller flow of gas / air - smaller amount of gasses coming out. Take a look at the stock 3SGE beams header - and i think its worth to be upgraded to somthing what was DESIGNED to get the better flow when the stock, and i dont think companys who design 5SFE header even know somthing about the beams motor... so this AS i said before i think would be a downgrade - not the upgrade... mr220v12-19-2006, 02:51 PMThe 4-1 type would be a downgrade. I'd only use that because I have one available, and it would only be temporary. There is a 4-2-1 type header now available for the 5sfe which would be a good match for the beams and would be an acceptable direct substitute. The elongated 4-1 header might not be too bad either.
The main advantage of being able to use 5sfe headers is that they are readily available. Most motors you'd buy don't come with a complete B-pipe. That, or most likely, the motor didn't come from an mr2 in the first place. So, when doing my conversion, i'll be able to simply buy a new header and bpipe set (or use what i have) instead of going down to the local exhaust shop and pulling down my pants and walking in backwards. Ordering a factory Toyota Bpipe for the rare beams jdm sw20 is nearly impossible. Its not even easy to get 2nd gen bpipes.
Being able to use compatible USDM parts can be a lifesaver when doing a fairly difficult JDM swap. Edophus12-19-2006, 04:55 PMhi guys, i wouldnt be surprised if they dont fit, if you look at earlier 3s heads the top studs of the manifold sit directly between the exhaust ports, but on the beams those same studs are offset. If the ports match up then maybe you could just drill new stud holes if there is enough metal, or weld some more metal in and drill that. I can confirm that this is *NOT* true.
The guy I bought my altezza intake manifold off wanted to run it on his gen 3 3SGE, and there was no practical way of making it fit.

would be nice to know if the ports are of the same size and placement as the 3sgte, as maybe having an aftermarket turbo manifold redrilled for those studs would be the easy answer for those wanting to go turbo.

I did notice though on the beams gasket, that where there is only one stud at the bottom in the centre, the gasket pokes out of the bottom there like it was designed for another stud to be there, so there is a good chance it does share its design with another, we just need to find which one :lol:

Tried to put a 5sfe gasket on a beams head, and from the looks of it, there is absolutley no way that the 5s header will fit. The porting is different and the spacing is different, so no reasonable amount of modding will work. This also means no gen2 3sg(t)e manifold will fit.
So much for an easy beams exhaust alternative. Will any of the early gen b-pipes fit up the the beams header? You could go to the UK to get a gen2 or gen3 3sge bpipe. Beams B-pipes for the sw20 are not going to be easy to come by.
Fortunately its very rare that a motor you buy will come without an exhaust manifold. Of course if you buy an automatic beams, you'll be stuck with that catalytic-converter in manifold thing which is probably the reason for the power loss. Roman12-31-2006, 08:25 PMNope, the B pipe is different too.
The spacing of the pipes is wider apart, a the 2-1 section.

Gen3 3S-GE Exhaust Side - Possible fit to the BEAMS. The lower, inside-left stud appears to be extra on the Gen3 and not found on the BEAMS but that would not prohibit it from working. I can take exact measurements if useful. Does anyone have exact measurements for the BEAMS?

BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT IS ON EBAY. EXAGGERATED PRICES.Saw the red top cam cover on ebay for> $400 usd. New toyota price is $80 usd. With the right numbers everything can be bought. msumr28204-11-2007, 08:48 AMGood point Mandalay but in the states, it is very difficult to source parts that were not available to the US market. The dealerships can't source the parts. Sometimes, if you have a very good connection, a dealership will have a partnership with one in Japan and then you can pull strings and find one. However Toyota really frowns on that and it is being cracked down on.
I tried everything to source a set of st215 caldina coils which you can see above and it was a pita. I ended up getting a great condition set used after a lot of searching. I've been trying to source a TRD header/extractor set and that has proved to be unfruitful. If you can get a set (even used) let me know :) Seems much easier in OZ.
