View Full Version : Antenna change

xxxboosted2xxx08-14-2019, 05:26 AMI was curious if anyone ditched the factory MKII antenna for something small and discreet.

The tall, retractable antenna was always an eyesore to me, but I do like using FM radio

Any options? JustinNC08-14-2019, 08:58 AMI ditched mine for the same reason, but haven't replaced it with anything. I just go with CDs. Prime sells a replacement from the S2000 but I don't care enough about FM for the money. hpidriver08-14-2019, 12:17 PMS2000 antenna if you want to install a short external antenna in the factory spoiler location.

You could also try one of those "hidden" antennas that mount to the windshield, there are some pretty cheap ones on amazon/ebay that might be worth it just to test it out. xxxboosted2xxx08-14-2019, 08:52 PMI even wondered if you could mount a little shark fin looking one on one of the side panels of the engine lid - hidden from MOST views, but still functional? If you didnt like it just replace that one piece.
I dont know. siman08-07-2020, 03:57 PMKnow this is a year late but I converted mine to use the back window. The back windows defroster was dead on my car so razor-ed off the residual, taped out new ones, taped out an extra small set at the top of the window, and put two brackets in allowing it to be used as an FM AM radio antenna. xxxboosted2xxx08-08-2020, 05:38 AMCan you tell me more about that? And how you tied it into your stereo etc?

I dont have the Toyota glass, it's a PPG windshield, doesnt have the two vertical lines in the center that, I THINK my 93 had that was original.
I dont know if Im remembering that correctly though 94mr2!08-10-2020, 01:14 PMOn my 93, I removed the anteannae completely as it was a non power antanne and it bothered me to no avail, watching it stand up always. So ugly.. I put a non hole 91 spoiler part, and painted it. Then on my stereo I added an antennae wire under the dash - and FM/AM is perfect

On my 94, I have the power antennae, and it doesnt bother me when down, since I only listen to AM/FM.

My cars have the "diversity" antennae option from factory - thus both windshield has the vertical lines down the middle. siman08-17-2020, 09:08 AMCan you tell me more about that? And how you tied it into your stereo etc?

All you need is defrost paint (you can also use copper metallic paint), the defrost replacement tabs, and optional but I like a clear coat to protect the copper paint. The cable that goes into the head unit will have a center contact and the outer jacket contact as a ground/shield you attach the center to the antenna tab on your window. You'll also notice that it will pick up more stations and the signal will be much stronger, as it's bare copper your using as an antenna. I ran a new plug and cable that I got off of amazon, keep in mind to have shielded cable from your antenna to the head unit. The cable will be susceptible to EMI form the rest of your car. Also as with trying to pick up radio frequencies there is an ideal length for the antenna to catch certain wave lengths I aimed for the middle of the needed length. I forgot the exact length but you can look at newer cars that have this type of antenna and find the length they use.

Also to remove the old defrost lines I used a razor, but I also had to redo the entire back glass anyway as the defrost lines where too far gone just for a repair.

O forgot to mention, if this is to much to do you can also get a DAB areal from the UK. I have that on my Celica, its easier; but doesn't look as good and hidden as this. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
