View Full Version : Kouki Taillights

nabera04-07-2019, 08:39 AMI'll start off by saying to each their own, but what is the deal with the kouki tail lights? I personally don't mind the ones that came on the US cars, and I find myself wondering is there some other benefit the kouki taillights provide? I admit I'm new to the MR2 game, so maybe I'm missing something. Is it purely for looks?

Also for the price these are selling for I'm surprised some company hasn't made replicas. bkperformance1904-07-2019, 03:00 PMPretty much for the looks. RePete04-07-2019, 03:06 PMAgreed about the replicas given that it seems natural lately for MR2 owners to gouge their own. If those same manufacturers can duplicate the fogs, sides & corner markers, why not produce the rear '94+ tails as well?

It's possible they're not going that route because the entire tail assembly isn't plug & play - and there's a new set of reverse lights too. You also need to hammer away part of the rear trunk assembly and also purchase, configure & install a lock cylinder (which is no longer sold by Toyota & it's unlikely a company would replicate one).

Yup, as BK posted, the change is purely cosmetic; functionally, there's nothing wrong with the old style. The newer ones just match the rest of the car in their almost timeless look (save for LEDs which can be installed afterward). To me, the original tails look extremely 80s/90s and date the car as obviously as the pop-up front headlights. In fact, they resembled the tails on my old '87 Civic which I thought were fine for an '87 Civic, but IMO look out of place on a modern mid-engine classic. emartu04-07-2019, 08:27 PMprices have inflated not only on kouki tail lights but also on the 91-93 Zenki style lights if you shop around the forums, eBay and Facebook groups.
Reason why koukis increased in value is mainly because nearly all parts have been bought out and discontinued Toyota exhausted its supply in global scale.
But don’t worry it’s only purely a cosmetic enhancement to please some eyes, so it’s rather a “want” not a “need”.
But if you look on eBay you’ll see that sellers from Japan are selling complete sets in great clean shape minus 94+ extended lock cylinder which is really not even required in range of $630-680 which is not too bad considering they were $550-$600 when attainable BNIB from Toyota.
The older outdated Zenki style light have also doubled and tripled in value for a complete set like I said it’s not just koukis that went up in price.
Exact same principle applies to many other mr2 parts like for example, discontinued stock oem front bumpers here in the USA are up in value too as soon as Toyota exhausted ran out of supply. Same thing with 93+ mr2 turbo oem brake calipers. There’s alternatives and ways around these parts which you don’t need but if you have the extra pile of ink printed Monopoly money hey good for you. nabera04-07-2019, 09:36 PMAbout what I assumed. I have no issues with people paying a lot of a cosmetic thing, was just curious if there was something else I was missing. It definitely isn't a unique thing with cars for something like that to go up in price. I do agree the kouki lights do look more modern, and fit the car nicely, but I guess I'll stick with the stockers :D JustinNC04-07-2019, 10:07 PMThe Kouki tail lights look better to me too, but not enough for what they go for. I'd rather spend that same money at a good body shop getting all the decades-old door dings professionally fixed and the body panels aligned to factory specs again.
