View Full Version : WTB mk1a (1985) coolant overflow tank reservoir

Jeanralphio09-01-2014, 04:11 PMHello all, I recently purchased an awesome mk1 and the coolant overflow tank on it is totally disintegrated.
I bought a new cap and hose so I just need the tank itself that mounts to the side of the engine bay.

Thanks in advance! Old Twos09-08-2014, 07:26 PMI've got an overflow tank but not sure if its from 85-86 or 88-89 SC. Not sure if there's a difference? artur197609-15-2014, 10:02 AMSame tank on all 85-89 models.

I have one in good condition for $35 shipped.

they're not the same 85-89. The tank in 85/86 is shorter than then 87-89 and SC is the 87-89 NA model with the black spill shield removed. Jeanralphio09-15-2014, 09:54 PMbut can i still use a tank from a later model? ie will it slide into the bracket thing in the side of the engine bay 2fas2c09-17-2014, 12:53 AMbut can i still use a tank from a later model? ie will it slide into the bracket thing in the side of the engine bay

I think you can. Old Twos09-26-2014, 12:08 PMbut can i still use a tank from a later model? ie will it slide into the bracket thing in the side of the engine bay
So, you should have received the one I sent you by now? Did it work? Jeanralphio09-26-2014, 01:46 PMI did receive it but the car has been in the shop for a clutch job. As soon as i get it back I'll try the tank and give the final verdict :p pnuge8809-29-2014, 01:15 AMId like to know as well. Mines all disintegrated too Kando09-29-2014, 08:16 PMI swapped one from an '89 SC into an '86 with no problem. Also put the spill guard, from the '86, onto the one from the SC. I didn't see any difference between the two tanks. Jeanralphio10-01-2014, 01:10 AMI swapped one from an '89 SC into an '86 with no problem. This. The later year tank did fit right into my 1985, and I did put my original plastic spill guard on the new tank as well.

The only difference between the two tanks is that the later year has about an inch and a half of extra plastic at the bottom, making it a little longer. the bit of plastic just looks like excess plastic to be trimmed off (i'm not saying do this, im just describing what it looks like).
